over-rated, under-rated. football players.

over-rated: Ronaldo

some years ago he was a real talent that made the difference and looked forward to become a legend. nowadays he became a legend thanks to fifa world player awards and world cup wins, yet.. he's not any superman. he's just a good striker, nothing else (in my opinion). lacks a little bit of technique, which is unusual for a brazilian player. maybe he has the potential to play a little bit better but just doesn't amaze me.

under-rated: Thierry Henry

speed, speed, speed. finishing. teamwork. this guy is really great to see playing, and moves the Arsenal team completely. why isn't he ever mentioned as one of the best strikers/forwards in the world? maybe he's that popular in UK but not around here.

I'll let the real discussion for the experts

overrated imo; Shevchenko
I think he is a great player, but not as good as the media makes him to be

underrated; most of the Czech team
alot of Croats too, esp. defence

He used to be overrated. Im sure a lot of people think hes better than he is, but years ago a lot of people were saying he was the best player in the world which isnt true. Strangely the thing that makes me think hes just that bit better than van nistelrooy is his technique. The way he can just slot a ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards, and his dribbling and creativity r a bit better than rvns. But i think van nistelrooy is better from close range.

Id say henry is definitely 1 of the most overrated players in the epl, at least in the english newspapers and on tv. Good teamwork yes but hes only a bit faster than rvn, his finishing doesnt come close to rvns, and hes nowhere near as good at dribbling as some people say. He rarely goes past people through good footwork, he just runs past them.

Of course it will always differ depending on what papers u read and what tv channels u have but from what im hearing, patrick vieira is probably the most overrated player in the world. Before the start of this season rodney marsh said he thought he was the best midfielder in the world Hes good but he isnt that good.
Also michael owen, rivaldo, patrick kluivert, david beckham, alan shearer, cristiano ronaldo (he hasnt impressed me at all yet).
Underrated: joaquin, simao, damien duff, paul scholes

Ive always thought Micheal Owen was overrated

and Duff underrated

Wudnt say Shearer is overrated. Maybe now coz hes old, but hes always been a consistant goal scorer. No other striker has scored 30 plus goals in a season in the premiership 3 years on the run. Ive always wondered how many more he wud have scored if he ended up at a place like Man Utd instead of goin Newcastle

I know hes scored a lot but i think thats mainly because hes very aware of whats going on during games and is very good at positioning himself. I think hes shit at dribbling, passing, crossing and generlly isnt very skillful. I dont even think hes that good at finishing.
I believe van nistelrooy will smash all the scoring records if he stays at united long enough.

underated by fifa: Michael Owen <- but rightly rated in Europe

underated by Fifa: Paolo Maldini <- but rightly rated in Europe, I hope he wins FIFA world player of the year even though its late in his career.

underated: Steven Gerrard

Overated by FIFA & the world: Ronaldo, though rightly criticised, by a fair majority.

Henry is fuckign amazing. If you watch the EPL week in week out, if he and Viera are both on form then Arsenal imo are the best team in the world to watch. They're movement, skill, techneque, i have not seen a team who can rip a team apart as Arsenal can. Yes Henry has pace, but that alone doesnt make you a great footballer. Jean Claude Darchville, who used to play for Nottm Forest was clocked as the fastest player in the english premier league about3 years ago...where is he now? who the fuck cares lol. Henry is also a honest player, he rarely goes down under a challenge and tries to score when he can, even if he is being clattered down. A good example of that is in last years FA Cup, i think against southampton? in the first few minutes, their defender lunged in and all henry had to do is fall over, the bloke would have been red carded and a penalty awared, he went on to have his shot saved i think, but it is very rare nowadays where the thirst for players scoring goals takes over their ability to, imo, cheat! He is rated fairly in england, but underated in Europe, but the thing is, its only my opinion.

Owen is top class, check is scoring record for england! He is going to beat the goals scored for england by far, and he will do it before he reacher 28, which is supposed to be prime age for football players.

Liverpool need to be more in the Champions League for Gerrard to be more recognised, but he is definately world class, in every game he has played for england, we've never lost, coincidence?mmmmm...

Duff will not become underated now he at Chelsea.

Underated players - John O'shea, Beatie (still), Anelka (on his present form, he is the best striker in the EPL!) and John Terry. I don't really watch too much European football, apart from Spanish to be really accurate on prospects from other countries, but i know Saviola is supposed to be mint!

Ok, Ronaldo isnt that good, but he is efficient. I think that the worst over-rated was Rivaldo, he suck and only got a good time in europe, i dont understand why he is still representing Brazil with so many good local talents

He plays @ Bordeaux, France.
This is a better club than Nottingham Forest.

You have to be joking!!!!! Henry is the form player of the EPL.Do you even follow it properly? In case you haven't noticed, RVN sits up the front, waits for the ball to come to him, and then he finishes. He is outstanding at that, i admit. However, Henry has had several assists already this year. He is a superb player. He is extremely fast, he is elusive and he is a class finisher.

HENRY for most underrated player.

Most overrated: Ronaldo (Man Utd) for sure. He has done nothing. Sure, he is good at fancy tricks and driblling, but he has not yet gained the maturity to know when to pass the ball before its too late. He often loses the ball by holding on to it for too long. I think this season he has had one assist in EPL and and one goal. That is not saying much. I say until he starts doing something, he is not worth the hype.

P.S. If you want to play with the big men, go to http://fantasy.premierleague.com to pick your ultimate team.

Bit of an exaggeration

I know.

Hes still overrated. Arse fans act like hes the best striker in the world or something. Hes about 6th best.

What hype? Hes not overrated, because not many people rate him highly. Hes nowhere near good enough for united first team.

I tried to reply to this ages ago but couldnt because of posting problems

Obviously u have never watched a game with real madrid/milan/man utd/valencia/juventus etc on form.
In the first half of last season arsenal did play some very nice football at times (better than united, untill they played them). I liked watching it. But their problem is, unlike the teams i mentioned, they just cant play like that against teams that are as good or better.

Yes i saw that and was pleasantly surprised he didnt go down, especially considering he plays with the biggest bunch of cheats and thugs in the epl.

ronaldo is better now than he has ever been so dont know what ur on about there
overrated - totti, beckham, owen

Posted by chesco on Nov-21-2003 17:43:

francesco totti gets nothing but stick from the majority of people so i do't see how hes over-rated.

Posted by Romain on Nov-21-2003 19:52:

yeah Henry is underrated... he's such a great player
He must be one of the fastest, and is honest and know how to play...

In France he's fairly rated, in each of the match he plays for France his name is shouted anywhere in the stadium...
he's only 26, so he'll get even better, and i'm sure he'll soon be fairly rated anywhere in the world as one of the top footballers.

Iv seen United play and i am not convinced that hey can break a team down like Arsenal can.Iv watched all the teams in Europe and none to me at the moment seem amazing. Real Madrid should IMO win the comp everyear with the players they have.

U remember arsenal beating Roma on their soil ? Roma were a good team? I also thing they'll do the business against Inter away from home.

Did u read my whole post?
Arsenal cant 'break down' convincingly teams that are (nearly) as good as them. Thats why they went into liverpoo mode last time they played united. They wouldve got rolled if they tried any fancy shit.
Dont u remember united beating newcastle 6-2? Newcastle r a good team and they definitely didnt play badly.

I didnt see the first leg against roma. I assumed they just played crap, because arsenal arent that much better than them.
But i saw the 2nd, when totti didnt even touch (or mightve lightly) keown yet he went down like mount everest fell on top of him. I doubt arse-anal wouldve got a draw if romas best player wasnt sent off so early.

I dont think theyll get beat by 3 goals again, dunno if theyll win tho.

that was a dumb move

Underrated for me has to be the Portuguese National Team with Figo, Conceicao, Rui Costa. I know, they often stink in international big stages but I look forward to Euro 2004 in Portugal, will be rooting for them all the way.
