um. just something i've wondered for a while

why don't dj's just record what they want heard at home and then just sit back and relax at the club?

I have discs in my wallet of some of my mixes....you could do it- some of my warm ups are simply cds...

but its a bit shit- and it is VERY boring sitting there and very cheap...

you cannot adjust it to the reaction of the crowd, you cant incorporate new tracks into it unless you do a new mix every week which defeats the purpose of it....if the mix cd skips you are fucked, and the crowd would notice....

When it comes down to it, i am payed to do a a job, and do a job very well..... if i did as you suggest, i would quite reasonably expect to be fired on the spot.....and probably would be....

I am very lucky to do this as a job/career- simply because i love it so much- which means i enjoy doing it and want to do it as much as possible......If i had any desire simply to stick a mix cd on, i would question my choice of job....and the reasons and desire to continue with it...

don't think i'm saying dj's are worthless. i was just wondering what it was all about.

man if I ever saw some dj just throw on a cd of his, I'd probably walk out.... Imagine going to see tiesto and he throws on Forbidden Paradise 5. I'd be like what the hell????

Djs spin live not only cause theyre paid to do it, but its the most f---in fun in the world. Nothing drives you more than people dancin to your music. Start spinnin it up, play for a crowd and then ask yourself the question again.

You'd lose so much energy if DJs did that. You've gotta read the crowd.

chances are if the DJ did that, apart from being fired hed prolly get chibbed

djs who interact with the crowd, play requests etdc are the best of all cos you can tell they love doing what they do and get paid for it!

Cool

crowd reaction, u play for the crowd and u cant possibly do that at home

the other day i was at a club (i had played there before), and was just drinkin and talkin to people. i noticed the dj and looked into the booth, he was actually playing from a cd that was previously mixed, it was so damn obvious, no beatmatching, nothing, what a freakin waste. djs like that should be shot

yeah its like going to see an improv show and finding out that its actully just a movie of the improv group doing their thing in their livingroom without a crowd

ive seen oaky do what you suggest, and was really pissed off that i payed 50 dollars to hear a cd play, just so he can buy some time to do his jesus christ pose.

Posted by montie on Oct-21-2003 22:39:

yup its all about reading the crowd and playing the song that fits the vibe.
the first skill of any DJ is his or her ability to move a crowd by knowing how to read it and using that to know which song to play next.

makes more sense now... $50!? ewwww... spend that on less perishable things.. like cords or something

hahahahhaha that sucks... and thats pretty lame coming from someone like Oakey.......

And yeah the rest of you guys are right.... That just defeats the entire purpose of DJing..... It takes out the whole rush of the mix cuz u know whats coming and u know how its gonna sound.... I,personally like the feeling of satisfaction you get when you pull off a good improvised mix..... and of course, you have to play what the crowd wants...and that is something you can NEVER predict...even if its the same club, same people, the vibe is almost NEVER the same as another night....

I second that.

You have to observe the crowd, read their minds in the moment of truth.. A good dj knows what the crowd want right there and then.. Why doesn't Pink Floyd just put on a cd... LOL?
