~It's Official: Watching Fox News Makes You Ignorant~

Surpsrise, surprise.

Misleading America
by Shaun Waterman

WASHINGTON -- It's official -- watching Fox News makes you ignorant.

To be precise, researchers from the Program on International Policy at the University of Maryland found that those who relied on Fox for their news were more likely than those who relied on any other news source to have what the study called "significant misperceptions" about the war in Iraq.

Pollsters asked more than 9,000 Americans about three commonly held canards: that the United States had hard evidence Saddam Hussein had been working closely with al-Qaida; that weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq; and that world public opinion was in favor of the U.S.-led war.

Overall, a scary 60 percent believed at least one of these fallacies. Eight percent believed all three.

Of course everyone who watches Fox News also says "Nuke-u-ler" since their idol says it that way

I kind of alluded to that in the other thread ...

quote:

Edit: But of course in anlayzing the study, asides from the fox results the data is slightly skewed. Those who listen to npr or prolifickly read the print media demonstrate a greater desire to learn ALL the news as opposed to those who may happen to catch short snippets of local news or whatever on tv.

Therefore those who listen to npr would naturally be less prone to misconceptions than those who are less than interested in keeping abreast of all the facts.

This sparks the question that if npr were a mainstream media news source on tv, and were listened to by the same audience as other major news networks, would their uninformed audience jump in the percentage of misconceptions they have? That would be an interesting study if at all possible. But it just goes to show that stats need to be examined carefully. But yea that does pretty conclusively establish that either A) Fox blows in fair/balanced coverage or B) Most of Fox's audience are morons. Combination of the two?

However, my statement was not quite as concise nor elloquent.
