Obsession with the past [music]

I had this thread idea that has been bugging me for a while now, and I decided that I can no longer keep it to myself. I have been a long-time electronica music fan, since about the age of 5 in the 80s, and I have been strongly influenced by the dance and house music of the mid-late90s. Examples:

Nalin & Kane - Beachball
Lustral - Everytime
Sex-O-Sonique - Thought It Was You
CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter (Armand's Mix)

Honestly, I often dream, sadden about going back and reliving the 1994-1998 music era. I feel guilty I missed up on a lot of stuff during that era, as I was too younf for clubs, and too stupid to listen to great suggestions by people who listened to good dance music. I wish I can start over. I sometimes think I'd rather have that classic dance/house scene today with new tracks more than trance. Is this just a home-sick feeling? The memories just come back ... .... the past 5 years have been so cruel for me ....

Umm the reason you think it was so great was simply BECAUSE you couldnt involve yourself. It wasnt that cool- esp when you think Rhythm is a Dancer was something you 'missed out' on.

Well, I didnt REALLY miss out on it. I heard those and many other tracks on the radio, saw videos on TV, it was the music that caused my rebirth into dance music, as around 1991 I stopped listening to music. I guess its the great memories associated with that music. And dont just concentrate on that one song, Rhythm Is A Dancer, I must agree its not the brightest example and I know several TAs who hate it, but like other classic dance. It's just ...

I cant lose that music, it got me to the music that I listen to today ... It's kinda like losing your best friends after you move and experience that psychological loss, and the music becomes the memories .... DOES THAT MAKE MORE SENSE?

nah it always made sense...but you shouldnt worry about missing old music. esp old dance music...

it always seems better when its over. just try to enjoy whatever it is you do now. i know that whenever i get bored with trance there is some other form of electronic/rock/hip hop music that reinvigorates me|

I guess you were never into dance music then. Just because music evolves doesn't mean we have to pack the previous genre and put it into the trash. I got nothing against trance, but dance music back then was very popular. I can't imagine why people today would diss it so much. I go to Premier Fitness all the time, and they play my CDs all the time, I play lots of genres, but the most they love the classic dance and house in the early-mid 90s. I cant explain much to you, but I guess you don't feel the same way. I dont even want to know how you would react to retro and disco ... its just so sad .... ..... that people just don't give that classic dance music the respect that it deserves.

HELL, I'D HATE THAT TOO ... I meant that if there were other producers/DJs that played today the dance music that very much resembled the dance music in the mid-90s ... I am not asking for the return of disco or retro, but its just sucks that one day you get into a dance music genre, and then a few years later it gets absorbed into the new genre. Do you know what I mean? I lived through several generations of dance music, even though I am 19.

I would be more than happy if PVD continued to play what he's playing today, and I hope he won't put any classic dance/house tunes in his rotation, cause that would be bad because that's not his style ... doesn't fit the pattern.

while its interesting to note that you are only 19...the reason health club people like that music is that they are older ladies that dont know anything about current dance music.

and im not saying that all music from that era was crap...but some of the tunes you listed are just pop cheese songs, and good dance music doesnt have to cater to the lowest common denominator|

If you miss the past so much, just start blasting the early/mid-90s dance on your stereo and feel the rythm. Because, I WILL ATTACK AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT!

.... anyways there's a lot of people like you, and they're called the kinky EBM people. They're still stuck in the 80's and they'll never leave. Probably for the more industrial versions, but they'll never leave from their mighty 80's.

Move on dude, let the past be the past and look ahead.

You can still listen to La Bouche and RIAD in the future, but don't let the past hold you back.

Well, when I am sad, I tune to classics ....

I am an active TA, and I listen to trance on a regular basis. Once in a while, however, I love to switch to some older stuff, sometimes disco, sometimes retro, techno, goa etc. but more often to 90s dance and house.

Ya, I guess that does make me look like those old people who are stuck in their youth ... I am not really stuck, but whenever I feel bad, not in the mood, I tune in to the classics and they bring back the good memories. I guess the last few years have been hell for me. AND IT AIN'T GETTING BETTER AS I AM GETTING CALLED UP TO THE ARMY IN JANUARY '04, REGULAR FORCES, FOR 3 YEARS!!!!!

I know what you mean about the old era, I remember when all those tunes came out, it seemed like a magical time. but then again, it's probably just your regular nostalgia, since I was like 10-12 when Artists like Real McCoy were big.

Ahhh, those lovely classix. . I remember when I was like 6 listening to very expensive western music tapes in Soviet Union with such tracks as:

yeah well, those tunes I've listed may be shit, but they still hold a special place in my heart when i listen to them. Whenever I hear em it brings me back to good times in my life.

Umm, I think it's important to point out that you can't have your childhood/teenhood back no matter who's making what kind of music. Another generation is getting its "growing-up with" music now.

That being said, I love listening to old tunes simply because they're so different from what you hear now. They came from a whole different social and political climate. And the intended ends, available means, and scarcity paradigms were different too.

Just give up!

I do live the world of today. I listen to new trance, progressive, and so on, and like it a lot. Just because I mentioned that the older electronica music turns me inside out emotionally, doesn't mean that I only stick to the past. After all, I have to go on. But the music is one thing that I can reflect on, remember the mood, the feeling, even sometimes the smell (depending on location) of some of the great memories I had back in time.

I really like the older sets, around 1999, 2000 of trance energy, sensation, dance department and innercity. The ones by tiesto, ferry, armin are classic and have fantastic uplifting trance that really makes me smile

... I share the same passion .... ... trance came into full force back then I love classic trance . Surely beats out some (NOT ALL, LOL) of the boring trance livesets I hear today (with except to the ones I attend in person )

I dont want to start a riot here, so I will be respectfull, and add that I love all trance, but when comparing classic trance to new, later trance I make this distinction.
CLASSIC TRANCE = ALL OF IT IS VERY GOOD
LATER, NEW TRANCE = A LOT OF IT IS GOOD/VERY GOOD.
