People who are a drain on the scene

Artists need support and by going to the gigs of deejays, buying their 12's and cd's help them. What bothers me is the freeloaders (I bet we have some on tranceaddict) who just download l33t mp3's and don't support the artists or deejays, I think that is just basically wrong.

what do you people think?

Posted by jdat on Oct-25-2003 18:30:

yes I find it ridiculous how so of "us" consider ourselves to be supporters of the scene and actually get respect from the rest when they destroy the scene from the inside.

it's come to my attention that if you speak up then people think YOU'RE the issue well fuXX that

I just have to get this off my chest cause the hypocrisie ( typo ) has gone far too long

[14:15] Well, I dont have the Cds but the tracks on it are really good
[14:15] when's the last time you bought a cd tigger ?
[14:16] hmm, I dont know, before mp3s were invented?
[14:16] hehe
[14:16] lol
[14:16] I say, about 2000?
[14:16] lo u serous claw
[14:16] nothing to be proud of tyger paw :/
[14:16] you music thief
[14:16] but I still bought Cds then since I couldnt find the tracks I was looking for so I was randomly buying trance CDs
[14:16] claw support the muzik and buy it
[14:17] s0t don't try and be funny
[14:17] we are talking about music theft here
[14:17] which tyggerpaw openly supports :/
[14:17] I find that disturbing
[14:17] lol

some people might think I'm kidding around but seriously people like that deserve to be shot to be so blatent in their theft of the scene.

I for one SUPPORT the artists by : BUYING their albums and ATTENDING their gigs ... our subject here above does neither but still holds his ground saying he is true to the scene and I am not ...

Fuck that .... spending 500 bucks on plane tickets to see one dj etc doesn't help me make me real in anyway I suppose at least according to what he says ..... he still considers me to be fake as well as people who are genuine like TTA

this world is spinning the wrong way around it seems like it

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-25-2003 18:32:

I need to find fulltime work to finance my cd buying habit and then I can go to see more gigs. It gets expensive after a while imo, and then you have lots of cd's. I'm still looking for used nubreed 1 and 3's which I hope to find but cannot find on ebay . Oh well, nice log there about tigerpaw jdat, now we realize the true him. He does not support the trance scene

Posted by jdat on Oct-25-2003 18:38:

what a shame

[14:33] tygger paw ? why because you don't want the real MIKE to know that you don't support the trance scene???
[14:33] I suport every scene, just not the cheesey one
[14:33] hehe

Posted by Evil_Gnome on Oct-25-2003 18:40:

I will admit that I have a lot of mp3s of artists. But its just because I am new to the scene and i am trying to see who I like and get a feel for everything. However, I do buy cds though. I just went and bought 4Strings and Armin like 3 days ago. So i buy my share of cds, I just use one 1 or 2 mp3s to see who I like.

Posted by noikeee on Oct-25-2003 18:40:

<- leecher who hardly ever buys cd :/

yeah i know it's wrong. seeing record labels shut down and everything isn't really funny. but we don't really see much trance cd's around here in our record shops. and buying online is a pain in the ass, especially for the damn expensive import prices (like at only-djs, 15 fucking euros of import for one vinyl ).

attending gigs, well, if some dj that didn't play tribal house came to our island, i'd do anything to be present there.

i plan to buy some vinyls online in the near future though. but it won't be much, like a pack of 5 vinyls each semester or something

it just ain't possible to buy everything we get on mp3, especially with import prices.

Posted by T-1000 on Oct-25-2003 18:43:

Well, you Do have a point there. Allow me to state my reasons. Firstly, being in India, It's impossible for me to attend Dj Gigs in Europe and elsewhere in the world. PVD has visited once, and maybe some other DJ's might consider.

Secondly, buying CD's turns out to be outrageously expensive, considering the Euro/Dollar to Rupee exchange rates. There's no specific 'Electronica' section in any of the really BIG CD stores we have here, atleast none that I know of has one. They do stock random ELECTRONICA/TRANCE CD's...but they're most likely some Psy CD's and other stuff like Oakenfold's Bunkka.

Thirdly I don't see myself buying Artist CD's or any compilation any DJ puts out...for I simply cannot bet on investing money on CD's of which I want just a couple tracks from. There might be exceptions to this rule, but rather rare at that...

So, for new music....I rely on a few places from where I acquire the MP3. I don't mind admitting being a 'freeloader' if that's what you're calling people like me

Posted by jdat on Oct-25-2003 18:47:

ok ok you guys are pulling the worst exceptions in the world.

I understand that living in remote locations like that, with different economic situations etc surely doesn't help getting the goods.

But I was not making reference to people in your cases, which is somewhat of an exception.

The subject we were speaking of bashes the rest say he's above us and more true to the scene etc .... FFS he's been to a club twice, lives CLOSE to some of the worlds best clubs

Shame shame shame

Posted by Psychonoise on Oct-25-2003 18:52:

here in brazil is dificult to support my artist cause the cds and vinyls are too expensive...some times its hard to find...and i dont have credit card, and the tax is about 60% of value of the product...but when i can i buy cds etc...

Posted by justin on Oct-25-2003 19:28:

well not me... i know the first thing that I did when I got turntables was go out and buy every record that I could find that i got on MP3. But that got kinda boring and I couldnt find anymore anyhow. besides ... now I dont even have internet access but i wish i did so I could listen to a larger variety of tracks to know what i am gonna look for before I go to the record store. but we all have our own...
Justin

Posted by Strike on Oct-25-2003 19:30:

I'll admit I do have mp3s most of which are live sets (no full albums)
I won't consider myself a freeloader though because of the fact that I do buy a lot of cds. I've spent $500-$600 on cds this past 6 weeks! I really need a full time job but it's impossible to juggle full time work and school. Our wants are insatible so regardless of how many cds I buy, I'll still d/l mp3s just because it's impossible to get every cd I want.

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-25-2003 19:40:

I'm in the position that most graduates have to go thru, called finding the first job. Got some interviews this week, if nothing pans out then I'm getting myself a part time job. I need a fulltime job to finance my life and music. CD'S are not cheap these days

Posted by Evil_Gnome on Oct-25-2003 20:03:

Yeah, also, I am not old enough to go to any shows yet. And, I dont have a job, so I buy cds whenever I have a spare $15-20.

Posted by montie on Oct-25-2003 22:48:

I don't buy CDs, but i spend shitloads of money on vinyl.

I think most of the DJ's make most of their money of gigs, not mix comps. Many people download DJ sets and mix comp albums and hear these guys or gals and fall in love with them and then go to see them when they come in town.
So even if they are not making money off the album sales they are getting the advertisig out when someone downloads their work which leads to more people coming to their events.

Posted by Dmatrox on Oct-25-2003 22:58:

Ive bought my fair share of records and CDs. about 200 records and 100ish CDs. I think $17-18 on a record and $25 on a CD is quite a lot of money. And i dont have a job either. Big name Djs are quite rich so going to see them is support

Its not a problem for big djs, but for smaller djs and producers, since most big djs can pull off an income of average salary of regular people in less than a month.

i download tons of live sets and ill download some singles if i really like it but i also support the artist and buy their cds also. i just bought PVD Reflections and AVB 76.

well..buying trance..especially young artists who need our support.. here in portugal, like paranoiko said, it's..impossible..
portugal electronic scene is only house driven..
what about buying online? paranoiko said it too, it's too expensive to import..
besides..most of the releases are in vinyl..i don't a player..cd's? most of the young producers release cdr promo's..
so..it's up to you guys who live near the artists..

PS- i'd like to know how the fuck do americans buy tunes..they're in another fucking continent!! online stores? here in portugal i only system f and politics of dancing..years ago..

Posted by nrjizer on Oct-25-2003 23:33:

I try to buy albums when I can... though rarely do I find an album I like, since I wont buy an artist album unless I like all the tracks, and I dont really like a lot of mixed cd's, save for a few which I own. I dont really bother wasting HD space on them either, in fact I beleive I have maybe 2 or 3 at most (one of which I'll be buying on my next outing to the music store).

I understand supporting the artists, but there needs to be better alternatives, especially for single tracks. I'm not buying one song for $10 on vinyl, which will just get worn and warped and everything else. Shit, I dont even have a decent turntable to play it on. If I ever had turntables (and I aspre to some day) I'd gladly fork over my food budget for vinyl, but until that day its not gonna happen. And I'm not going to buy an artist album either unless I like all the tracks, not just a few - its a waste of money.

The reason so many people turn to downloading is because theres no better alternative. Until I can buy CD quality (320 kbps), un-DRM'ed mp3's that I can redownload for free should my HD crash or something, for say, maybe $.50 - $1 USD, no monthly fee crap, then I'll just stick with DC++. Services like iTunes and such are already paving the way, but the selection for someone like me, with my widely varied tastes, is pure shit.

I don't see why it would be so hard for some labels to offer a paypal service or something for high quality mp3's. They'd make a killing. Just look at the VCR. The MPAA fought rabidly to keep VCR's down - but selling tapes ended up saving their whole industry.

Posted by Simcut on Oct-26-2003 02:08:

Dunno

hey, I may be a mp3 person but, I worked it out today that I have approximately spent 14,000 on vinyl, if that aint "supporting the artist" I dunno what is :\

Posted by Magnetonium on Oct-26-2003 03:30:

Unhappy Well, there's a point to be seen here ....

OK, first of all, where I live (and dont have a credit card to shop online), electronica music is hard to find and rare, so I do download ... music. I also BUY CDs and support the artists (got about 100 CDs that I purchased). But I cannot afford to buy a 35 dollar CD every time, cause I have a lot of expenses .... its not like the rap/pop/rock junk, where CDs cost like 15 bucks .....

Posted by Floorfiller on Oct-26-2003 04:37:

there sure are a lot of people without jobs around here hehehe. as you can see in my sig...i'm trying to support more than i have in the past. i'm definitely a dler, but i want the vinyls too muhahahha...

i buy as many vinyls as i can afford, gonna get a fake ID so i can start clubbing from time to time because that is where there true money comes from

Posted by DJ Freestyle on Oct-26-2003 10:11:

I DL tracks, but whenever I have money I go & support the artists. Unfortunately I've had some bad luck. I haven't had any actual money for the past 2 months & still won't for about another 2. I'm still gonna try to see PvD in November though. I do own a small amount of vinyl & more than 100 EDM CDs. Call me a leecher if you want, I still wouldn't buy anything if I didn't have the internet.
