Spankin' New Trance Mix, feedback wanted

I recorded a mix yesterday, and after listening to it several times I'd have to say its probably my best, especially in terms of beat matching, EQing, and quite a few of the transitions came out pretty well. At least in my opinion. But I'd like to hear some feedback on it.

I used all vinyl for this set, minus the intro bit, which I reworked on my own, burned a 44.1kHz WAV to CD, and used in a CDJ-1000MK2. As for my other gear, I use a 1200MK2, a 1210M3D, and a DJM-500. I record an average of 2-3 mixes per week but this is only the second one I've posted to TA. So please just have a listen -- I don't ask this often.

I apologize if the download is relatively slow -- usually its not, but it has its moments. If someone can offer about 120mb of space on a fast site, I'd be happy to move it there so folks can download faster.

Anywho, the only thing I don't like about this mix is the problems I had keeping Back To Earth beat matched with The Crowd Song. I remember what the problem was, and it could have been avoided, but I did what I could. I also didn't mix out of several songs quickly enough, but I can work on that.

Thanks in advance...I look forward to seeing some responses on this.

Alright what I thought. Could have gone a little slower in As the Rush because it is a bit softer song. Also a bit slower into Weekend Wonder. I thought you did fine out of The Crowd Song. A bit quicker into Traffic would have been better I thought. and going out of Traffic the beat was off a fair amount. Just because of your release I think. I like the placing of the mix though had the beat been on. I like your finishing song. Its one of my favorite. You could have played it a tad bit faster, but that is just opinion. It was fine how you did it. Overall I liked the mixes. There were a few beat matching issues here and there like out of the first song, but overall it was really good. GOOD JOB!!!!

Heya Brian,

First up,

Nice mix. Good track selection on the whole and I like the intro which adds a nice creative touch.

Touched by the Sun is a beautiful track in my opinion and the mix into it is good too. From a beat matching perspective I would say that you are more than competent to hanlde a club scenario. I hear "big named" DJs every week mix worse from a beatmatching perspective (Not all of them I have to add). What they do differently is think about key structure and build by using that too.
Quite a lot of your mixes have that nice key change feel to it, but it's going backwards so you actualy drop rather than go up. On a dance floor it will be something that will be the difference between you being a good DJ and someone that give peoople a night to remember.
Somepeople may be saying "Oh god, not another Harmonic mixer fanatic" at this point. Then they say "I don't need that crap, I just know when to play a record at the right time", the thing is they don't realise that it's the key of the record that makes it right.

You had a bit of a nasty key clash between Midway and Tiesto. Traffic is a bit of a weird one actually as the beat in it has elements that are slightly out of time with itself thus making it sound like a bodged mix even if it's not. And even if you did drop it slightly it is something that you would have got away with it no problems on a dancefloor. Although if you are anything like me, just getting away with it is not enough.

Rythm Gangsta into Yves Deruyter is probably the weakest mix in terms of beatmatching especially as you can hear the correction quite clearly. You also get left with what I call a dry mix i.e. just beat on beat which to be fair actually works on some cases but can also serve as a big energy killer.

My feeling is that your mix starts out really strong and gives great hope in terms of what's coming later but I'm afraid that I find it slightly dying off towards the end.
In my opinion 'Motorcycle' brought the tempo down just a little too much and then you didn't quite manage to rebuild it after that.

However, I am not going to leave you on that note. I understad that it's not easy to make a high energy set when you are not playing to an audience.
From what I heard in the begining of your mix I feel confident that you will sort out the minor details that I have mentioned. I would also urge you to start thinking harmonically as it will take you to the next level.

I hope this has been of some use to you.

All the best
Nem

Hi, very good mix (if perhaps not really my style). All the transitions went well in my opinion, the fact that the beats are a bit off on 13->14 is only a very small annoyance, in fact you would probably not notice it much at all if it was played loud in a club. I do agree that you could have rearranged your tracklisting somehow, for example I think I would never have played 4 & 5 before 6 & 7 in a SHORT set such as your own. Also, you should have saved that Envio track for use later on in your mix, to me it is not an opening type of track at all.

Nevertheless, a mix that I can safely recommend to anyone into epic/uplifting trance who also likes some harder stuff.
