What is 'Trance'?

Can anybody answer this question?

I know it seems an obvious question.. & I know what it is..but..only my interpretation of it..what's yours..like how would you explain it to someone who has no idea of trance, of which I always find myself having to do lately.

Just curious to hear other peoples ideas.

Trance is a derivative of another form of electronic music (without getting into some ideological arguement, i couldn't tell you which one it is). It sounds closest to house, but there are several key structure changes in it. First, and foremost perhaps, is the prominence (dominance?) of the melody throughout the track, it's very clear, and pronounced, and usually sounds.. isolated. Second, [in traditional trance] there is a breakdown and a buildup. This is where the bassline cuts out (breakdown), and a buildup is where a drumroll accents the entrance of the bassline again (sometimes long drumroll, sometimes nearly unnoticeable).

Today, these vices are less and less apparent in "trance music". You'll notice drumrolls are noticeably shorter or even nonexistant (firewall - sincere). Couple this with a slight retardation of bpm and it becomes apparent that trance music has lost the "intense energy" it used to have. It's also lost a good portion of it's "rigid structure". (intro - breakdown - buildup - breakdown - buildup - outro).
