bell high speed sympatico

anyone have this? im soo sick of my cable, i wanna switch for next month

how fast is it/what speeds can i expect

and how is the setup initially and customer service after??

Posted by AmbiguousBliss on Oct-26-2003 21:33:

I used to have Bell Sympatico's High Speed Edition, but now I've got cable. To be honest, I'm more pleased with my current ISP (Cogeco Cable).

Posted by SgtFoo on Oct-26-2003 21:36:

I got sympatico high speed!!... i love it!... very fast downloads, but uploads are for some reason capped at 30k/s or so
... the fastest download i've seen it a 20 second burst of 311k/s... fukin fast!!!!... but I also tweaked winXP to run better on sympatico. You have to have your own ethernet card... after that, they give you the modem and the software if needed.

friends tell me that cable sux for internet games and multiple downloads.... much the opposite with BSHS

Posted by Resnick on Oct-26-2003 21:41:

ya internet gaming!!! icant wait, u get like 40-50 ping, its insane
downloading i think cable is usually better tho, but thats under normal conditions, my cable now is shit because:

i download at about 1-2k/s
it takes about 30-60 seconds to post on ta...thats soo shitty
i cant listen to music streams, like asot/gdjb, even at 32k it bufferes up the ass
no online gaming
and the list goes on...its horrible...HORRIBLE

anyways thanks guys

I've had sympatico for the past 2 years and I have no complaints. Since they switched the regular users to the 1.5MBit lines a few months ago things have been even better. My downloads are usually 170-180 kb/s and upload is 30-40 kb/s. I don't download all the time so this is good enough for me. btw, I have a router and 3 machines hooked up to it.

Posted by GT_TraNcE on Oct-26-2003 21:59:

i get 20 to 30 ping in quake 1 mega tf =)

NICEE!!!

k couple more questions, first, are u guys talking about 'high speed' or 'ultra high speed'?

and anyone get the expressvu combo w high speed? my parents wanna switch the cable and they refuse to let me switch my internet unless i do it same time as tv, so i gotta look that up too now...

so is there a combo? and how much is it, just for basic tv and high speed?

Posted by Endlesswave on Oct-26-2003 22:17:

Ultra highspeed is NOT worth it. NO way in HELL will I continue to shell out the $60 a month or so for it. Cancelling as of today. Going back to reg highspeed.

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-26-2003 22:17:

I had bell and it was shit with the 5gb up and download limits which sucked ass, so I went to rogers cable and since my parents use rogers cellphones and have rogers digital cable....they got a decent deal.

i'm on high speed at frist my connection wasn't all that great so i called them and they came and fixed it now it's pritty damn fast i'm pritty happy with the service

Posted by StereoPrincess on Oct-26-2003 23:59:

I personally hate Sympatico but I have it instead of cable because I'm getting free cable and don't want to mess it up.

I had much better capabilities with cable. like when I'm downloading something big (off Kazaa or something) my entire connection becomes dial-up speed. It seems like you can't do more then one thing over the connection. I never experienced it before.

Is there really a cap on download and upload on Sympatico? I have not experienced this yet.

Yes, the telco sets the RX/TX speeds on the modem. Bell (in areas with newer (<10 year old) wires uses the same modem for all packages - but just alters the RX/TX abilities of the modem.

umm i disagree....
my cable gets me 15-20 faster latency on avg than my sympatico used to....all depends on ure area...cable can be shitty if ure in a shitty area.

hmm UHS is not that bad, getting good loading times, what's really good is the upload speed, people getting 80 k/s from me
But the nonetheless the 3 Mbps is very niiiice

they lifted the cap at the start of summer.. its great... unlimited d/l... the only limitation is u/l speed cap...

Posted by AwakenedAddict on Oct-27-2003 04:46:

Bell Sympatico, High Speed ---> best investment of my life!! 1.5mbit DSL, 700kbps upload, counterstrike pings of 20-30 etc :P I've had no problems with it as long as i've had it. Also the unlimited bandwith is a lifesaver.

Posted by Kid Lax on Oct-27-2003 04:54:

man my sympatico is giving me shit speeds compared to everyone else

i think i might call them tomorrow and see whats up

ive measured it on lots of different sites and they're all saying about 5-600 kbps down and 120 kbps up

i live at morningside/401, and my house was built 10 years ago

Posted by Kid Lax on Oct-27-2003 04:56:

could it be the modem that im using? we're still using the original one that we got when we first got sympatico, which was years ago when they first started offering it

Posted by DigiNut on Oct-27-2003 04:59:

There are lots of DSL companies in Toronto other than Bell, and I'd highly recommend going with one of those instead. They all use the same lines, but Bell has more stupid rules and regulations and their customer service/tech support is somewhere in between nonexistent and total crap. Honestly, don't deal with those scum-sucking bastards, use another company.

Oh and, also, I always found Bell to be quite slow. With Cogeco cable, I know I've had downstream bandwidth of around 800 kBps at times, but with Sympatico it's capped to 200 kBps (1.5 megabit), and the upload is brutal, it's capped to 15 kBps (120 kbps). ADSL is crap, although I can see VDSL being popular in the future.

Posted by Strike on Oct-27-2003 05:06:

i advise bell sympatico
i can d/l at 350-400 kb/s sometimes
wayyy better than cable
plus cable went down all the time in my area

I don't know where you're getting that figure from, but that's physically impossible to get from a 1.5 megabit connection. The TOTAL bandwidth is 1.5 mbps, which is 192 kb/s (unless you meant kb/s as in bits, where 400 would actually be 50 kB/s, not sure if that's the case).

Posted by bass drive on Oct-27-2003 05:21:

max I can get with bell dsl is;
~180 kbs download
~70 kbs upload

Posted by monishb on Oct-27-2003 05:54:

Arrow High Speed Ultra here

I guess Strike maybe talking about ultra high speed from bell, which i currently have at home

the installation was a pain in the butt , but after they got everything setup it was smooth sailing, i agree DSL has its issues, but the speeds i get is awesome, no caps, i can download at 300-380k and upload speed is 70-90k

its a 3 mbps line, but its better than waiting on rogers, it took me sometimes forever on rogers.
