I prefer the term psytrance but goa elitists will act like you just dropped the soap if you call goa "psytrance" sounds the fekkin same to me. Differences are rather trivial, not enough to support the splintering into different genres but thats just from my uneducated opinion...

i love goa, been there twice for raves and whatnot.. (i lived in india for 4 years) yeah i would post basically exactly what DJDigDug said, but instead ill make a few general differences between goa and psy.. psy trance has more high screechy sfx... i guess 'gms - lumberjack' sums it up pretty well.. goa has less crazy sfx for tunes, but it way deeper than normal trace.
ok that wasnt exactly a great explanation, but the difference is something you KNOW when hearing the two styles, way to hard to use words.
i dont hate the word "goa" but in my language goa means cow shit. no jokes. it really means cow shit. when i was in india they used the goa to burn fire. i lived there for 2 yrs, but i never went to goa.

Goa is a word that comes from india. The soo called master of all goa is a guy called Goa Gill. He's old and has gone through way too many bad things(aka drugs).
Goa is actually a province on the west coast of India, formerly a Portugeuse colony (which contributes to its distinct subculture). For most purposes it doesn't matter what you're calling the music - Goa or psytrance... but if you wanted to be accurate, realize that Goa is specifically the more tribal/ethnic-influenced old school stuff made from 1994 up to 1999 or so (naturally with a few straggler releases outside of that period) whereas psytrance as we know it today is a sort of evolution out of the Goa sound integrating much from techno, 'regular' trance (for lack of a better term), and other genres (house/prog surely included). Composition was the focus of the late 90s, then sound quality took precedence after the turn of the millenium. Nowadays psytrance is some of the finest produced music and would likely surprise those with only a casual interest... its certainly not the blip-bloppy crazy nonsense you may have thought it was. Try an album from artists like Human Blue, Phony Orphants, M.O.S., Antix, Ticon, Magnetrixx, or Vibrasphere. It is unlikely that anyone would consider this the same sound that came out of the mix of cultures found on Goan beaches in the early-90s.
i seen goa gil do a 24 hour set in san fransisco last year

i think some artists like "Logic bomb", "GMS" (i don't like GMS at all, but that's not the question), "Hux-flux", "Neuromotor", "Parasense"...make more psytrance than goa. Artists who make goa are IMO "Astral projection", "Man with no name", "MFG", "Chi-A.D". . I guess goa trance is more melodious, more "harmonic", psytrance music uses more twisted sounds, huge effects and crazy distorted sounds. Then some artists make both : "Cosmosis", "Battle of the future Buddhas", "Hallucinogen", for example.
i don't claim to be an expert, but i have listened to this music during several years, so...
ahem
Yahel

pretty good psy
Goa or psytrance is for the evolutionated listener/raver, not music for anyone, it's great, i think it's the most authentic genre of electronica.
Dont be soooo defensive!

Goa, love the word.
It's also by far my most favourite genre of electronica, followed by psytrance. I'm not a goa elitist but I don't like it either when people label psy and goa together. Hard to really put it into words since if you ask 100 people, you'll get 100 different answers.
To me, goa has a more deeper melodic tribal sound. Much more raw than psy which is more twisted and distorted. There's definately a big difference.
I especially love stuff from artists like Shiva Chandra, Genetic Spin, etc. Quality Stuff.
Goa & Psy are excellent...there was a goa/psy party here in town, they had us take our shoes off and they had mats on the floor; very hippie vibe, really cool. Definitely a good alternative if the Vicks-smearing mega candy raves get on your nerves.
Psy-trance originated from India?
that's a new one for me
