cracking ur knuckles

is this actually harmful? i've always been told that it causes arthritus (spelling?)

but my sis told me today that that aint the case.

anyone know?

Posted by Chris Crossland on Nov-02-2003 00:44:

Thats a myth i heard but i still don't think you should do it but im 17 and have arthritus in my thumb but i dont crack em it runs in my family im getting it in my back :/

Posted by DigiNut on Nov-02-2003 00:48:

Myth.

Like catching a cold from cold weather, getting zits from sweets, or getting big by eating vegetables.

cracking knuckles or any other joints is just releasing the air inside. it might not get you arthritis, but joints do become looser.

Posted by nrjizer on Nov-02-2003 02:02:

well is it that a bad thing then? I regularly crack my back (by laying on my belly, putting my arms under my shoulders and arching my back up, so I make kind of a rounded L shape). My back certainly feels much better, and looser, after I do it. I do it 2-3 times a day.

I thought it was nitrogen buildup between the joints that made the cracking sound?

Posted by squirrelly on Nov-02-2003 03:08:

Goodness I hope it doesn't cause any problems. I've been doing it for years! I can't last two hours without cracking em. (my back too)!

eating sweets and drinking soda does give you pimples. Acne, on the other hand, is a different story and has a medical origin.

Ive heard thats by doing that it releases gases that are in your joints, but thats about it.. i think its a myth, that it causes athrytis... but then again.. who really knows..

I think they do make them loose, but whats wrong with that really?

nothing, really. all i know is that with time they just pop louder, as there is more air in them, that's all. and if you practice, you'll be able to crack joints you could never popped before... like i can't pop the knuckles on my left hand, but i do it all the time with my right hand, my back, and my neck

here's a good read: http://science.howstuffworks.com/question437.htm

No, it doesn't.

Medical evidence, please.

Oh, and "acne" and "pimples" refer to the same thing, one is just the medical term.

Not true. Acne, means you have disgusting pimples all over your face. You can have a pimple, and not acne.

Posted by Boomer187 on Nov-02-2003 10:33:

well I hope it doesn't, I have been cracking my knuckles, neck, and back countless times everyday since 5th grade, and I am in 17th grade now, so 12 years I have been at it.

I think it would be hard to prove since there are so many other factors involved in arthritis. Just my guess though.

i asked my doctor and he said to just don't do it..

Posted by nekholm on Nov-02-2003 12:20:

I do it all the time, I'm addicted, I just can't stop!

My girlfriend doesn't like it for some reason. None of the girls I know actually. How rare.

Posted by Paula on Nov-02-2003 13:15:

There isn't anything harmful about it. I had to sit and listen for 30 mins in my anatomy+physiology class while my teacher rambled on about the whole issue. basically she just said, no it's not harmful.

i don't know about knuckles, but for those that crack their spine (or neck) TRY TO STOP ASAP. talk to any spine doctor and you'll know that everything you twist, bend, crack your back, (or your neck) you not only release the air between the discs of your verterbrae, but you shift them slightly. over time, the curvature of your back can be shifted dramatically and one day you may wake up with your back locked up and in intense pain. reason i know is cuz my track team in high school had a chiropractician who was an ex footballer player come in to talk to us. he showed us pics of how one day he woke up and couldn't move his neck. reason? the discs in his neck verterbrae had rotated 180 degrees and had locked up.

occasionally cracking your back is fine tho i believe, just not excessively.

acne and pimples are not the same thing.

acne is painful, systemic(endocrine system) and you cant really pop your acne cysts. You go on Accutane or some other drug to get rid of acne.

zits, pimples, blackheads etc, however are a clogged pore, and can be caused by hygeine and diet. this can be cleaned up by washing, popping them, and treatments like clearasil etc.

It's called mild acne.

That's like saying that a cold means you're bug-eyed, have lost your voice, and are blowing chunks out of your nose every 10 seconds. Medical conditions come in varying degrees of severity you know!

Back to topic, I should have mentioned the first time: cracking your knuckles won't directly cause any problems, but if you have other things causing arthritis or RSI (genetics, for example), cracking things WILL make it worse. Not everybody is genetically predisposed, though, so a lot of people can get away with it.

J, you're not correct - everyone seems to assume that "acne" automatically refers to the most severe kind of acne. It doesn't, not necessarily. Some acne can be cured just by better hygiene, others are related to things like stress and are more severe.

am i the only person here who got this insanely outragious urge to crack every knuckle i have after reading this thread?

Posted by Boomer187 on Nov-02-2003 17:50:

eh I looked up the definition of acne up on google....

from hyperdictionary:
A disorder of the skin marked by inflammation of oil glands and hair glands.

from thefreedictionary:
an inflammatory disease involving the sebaceous glands of the skin; characterized by papules or pustules or comedones

also from the hyperdictionary, definition of pimple:
a small inflamed elevation of the skin; a pustule or papule; common symptom in acne

also from thefreedictionary, the definition of pimple:
a small inflamed elevation of the skin; a pustule or papule; common symptom in acne

====================================================

a great site with pictures and definition is HERE

in that link it says that another name for acne is pimples. SO i guess they are used synonymously. I always thought that acne was the condition consisting of pimples.

I only check cause I am interested in what actually is the difference if there is any. I konw its way off topic
