Worm Popper Hows it goin People....Newbie here with a ? about a DJ Set up im looking at Purchasin

Hi im looking at perchasing a set....dont know a whole hell of a lot about tables and mixers and i was just wondering what people thought of this set im looking at perchasing....
2 Technic SL-1200 MK5 Pro turntables
a PCV175 euro Techno/Trance Mixer
a Crown XLS 402 Power Amp
....i already know what kind of headphones im going to get....speakers are another issue....but i can figure that out on my own.....
thanxs for the help

You can save yourself some money on an amp and buy Amplified reference monitors that way you kill 2 birds with one stone. Good reference monitors would be: M-Audio BX8 ($479 pair) and Event TR8 ($499 pair), the best would be: Mackie HR624 or HR824 ($400 or $700 per speaker), Tannoy System 600A or 800A ($1400 or $1900 pair)

well thanxs....now i have another question....anybody know where i could find a site that i could perchuse that product from...?

Posted by Teraform on Nov-05-2003 07:42:

the amp i saw would only cost me $329.99 before taxes and the features were...
Rugged 2U chassis
Forced-air fan cooling
Electronically balanced XLR inputs
Touch-proof binding post and Speakon outputs
LEDs to indicate clipping, power and fault conditions
570W per channel @ 2 ohm stereo
400W per channel @ 4 ohm stereo
260W per channel @ 8 ohm stereo
800W @ 8 ohm bridged mono
3-year, no-fault, fully transferable guarantee
now besides the warrenty...is this a good amp.....and is that all i would need to power a set...or would i need a second one....?

www.123dj.com has good prices. they are based in Chicago. I have bought pretty much all my equipment from them.

as to your setup. I don't know if I'd go with the Technics MK5.
don't get me wrong, i would love to have a pair of those, but if you want top of the line you should go with the Numark TTX-1's. They are cheaper and have even more features than the Tech Mk5's. I'm a big fan of Tech's. I have a pair of Mk2's myself and i love them. but if you want the best bang for you buck you are better going off with the numarks.
or you could buy the numarks and use your left over money to buy one of the new technics CD turntables.
if you don't mind spending the money tho, you will be very pleased with the tech mk5's.

Posted by Teraform on Nov-05-2003 08:58:

i hear many good things about technics....but rarly do i hear anything about numarks....
i was originaly going to go with 2 numark TT200's....
they are about 400 dollars cheaper then the 2 tech mk5's.....
i was just not sure...just wanted to go with a safer product....
how long would TT200's last under normal wear and tear.... or is that a problem with those tables....
also...are TT200's pretty out of date....or would the make for a good begginner set...

Posted by Teraform on Nov-05-2003 11:21:

yo thanx montie....i think im gonna go with the numarks for sure...
and thanxs for the site too man...i found the same Crownxls 402 amp for a cheaper price....even found a better amp for still a cheaper price then the 402 at kellyindustries....that wicked....if the xls 602 is better of course.....
anyway i was reading some of the technics vs. numarks postings....
got me really comfused....but i have ultimatly choosin to go with numarks.....same price as the mk2's cheaper then the mk5 still....
thanxs for the help....
also have another question....
what are amplified reference monitors....
i have not been able to find them on any sites....
whats the difference between amplified reference monitors and amps...
i noticed that the ARM's seem to come in pairs...
do you have to buy more then one amp or do ARM's just come like that....

Posted by Teraform on Nov-05-2003 11:45:

hey once again....
anyway just wondering about a PA system for just household use or for private parties....would 2 400 watt speakers do...im not sure about this...im guessing it would.....
sorry for all the questions....just wondering...

Posted by Teraform on Nov-05-2003 11:52:

if i were you i'd get the 1200's for sure. i mean really, when you go to play at a club what are they going to have? 1200's. i would also get reference monitors like vlad said. you'll be happier in the long run. i wouldn't worry about an amp and speakers to play a house party with just yet. it will take you a bit to get good enough to play live in front of a crowd. the studio monitors will allow you to "grow". you mixes will be tighter and cleaner with monitors because they are much more accurate. you'll be able to record a promo cd with monitors a lot easier then you would a "party system", since you can't hear your mistakes as well on a "party system". also, if you decide to move into producing you absolutely need a set of monitors. it's just a much better investment for a beginner and it will leave you with a few bucks left over to buy some vinyl. cheers.

i agree with vio, go with the technics. the numarks do have more features, but their quality/stability is questionable. i've read a thread about the motor overheating and burning out after long usage.

most threads i read from ttx owners say the extra features are useless. the bpm counter is way off most of the time. the pitch % display is useless. it does look pretty though.

i also agree that you should skip the amp and get a pair of monitors. id go with mackie hr624 / hr824. avb uses em so they gotta be good right :0

please dont buy from 123dj.com, they are one of the problem sites that alot of us TA's complained about.

Places to buy:

djmart.com
pssl.com
planetdj.com
8thstreet.com

Those are all good sites, their prices are good as well.

Posted by T:REBEL on Nov-05-2003 21:31:

PSSL.COM is one, if not, of the better sites. They're based in Los Angeles, CA.

You should really stick with the TECH MK5 or MK2. Get them black! Forget the rest. The TT-X1 is an excellent table but more suitable for the skratch DJ. You also want to avoid straight arm tables. And about the overheating problem on the TT-X1, I haven't experienced it on mine, but other people have and they've told me about it. There is a reason why TECHNICS is the industry standard. You'll never have to replace them!

As for the mixer, why not go up a notch and grab the VESTAX-PVC-275 instead? It's got more options. Better yet, why not go for a four-channel mixer like the DENON DNX400, STANTON RM80, or the NUMARK DM1295? With the extra money, you could grab two table-top cd-players (like the Stanton S-250...if you're gonna skratch, do it on your turntables).

As for your speakers/amps problem, why not go with powered speakers like the JBL-EON-G2 or the MACKIE SRM450?

I dunno about the TTX1 being for skratch DJs, as famous turntablists cut their teeth with the OG 1200s...but I'd definelty go with the 1200s. While the NuMarks may have fancy features and a ridiculously high torque(which maybe the reason for the overheating) you really don't need all that...just a solid, strong table with basic pitch, on and off, and 33/45 buttons...everything a Technic has, nothing more, nothing less.
Trust me. I bought my 1200s used off of ebay more than 2 years ago and they still run just as good.

Posted by Teraform on Nov-06-2003 07:28:

ok then.....
so not to use 123dj.com....
now these Amplified Referance Monitors can they be aquired at one of the online shops that was listed....same with the power speakers...

Posted by Teraform on Nov-06-2003 08:08:

Amplified Reference Monitors....
are these named Amplified Reference Monitors on the online shops....
or are they just regualar amps....very confused

Posted by dartman on Nov-06-2003 08:14:

yeah you can get "Amplified Reference Monitors" at those online shops mentioned. amplified reference monitors are these burly little (generally) speakers, that have a flat frequency response so you can acurately judge how your mixes sound. amplified ones just have the amp built into to the speaker, saving you money. if your looking for them online they might also be called studio monitors, or possibly just monitors.

another shop to look at is audiolines.com i just got a set of shure m44g carts from them, each with a extra stylus for the same price as prosound charges just for the carts. i also have bought stuff from prosound but if you can save a few dollars........

Posted by Teraform on Nov-06-2003 08:33:

do i need something to power turntables....or can i just plug those in?????

Posted by Teraform on Nov-06-2003 08:46:

that's a pretty good setup there. only issue is that the shure m44-7 is a cart designed specifically for scratching a battle djs not for mixing djs. if you're just going to mix or do just a small amount of scratching then go with the m44-g if you really want the m44 series.

If you plan on buying from the states, then dont forget about the customs taxes.
Anyways, I have mk2's and I love em.
I'm planning to get a new mixer, I'm thinking a Behringer DJX-700. I've heard a lot of great things with it and its really nicely priced. Maybe you should look into this mixer as well.
What do you people think about the Behringer DJX-700??

Posted by Teraform on Nov-07-2003 05:53:

Yo Godsound....how do you find out about how much they charge on customs....is it by weight....

I'm not sure how you can calculate it.
I had a friend buy a Pioneer DJM-600 I believe it was, and it cost around an extra $200 I believe for customs.
I'm pretty sure its around 15-20% of the item cost.
Customs come 3months after you recieve your item so you wont know right away how much you're being charged.

When I was getting my tables, I was thinking about buying off ebay because I saw a bunch of good deals in america BUT customs really scared me off. I waited and found a really good deal on my tables locally, so just wait and you'll find a good deal eventually. But if you cant wait then make some phone calls and try finding out how much customs are OR buy them at your local store.
good luck with everything!

agreed, I have the M44Gs and they are the bomb, if your gonna go with the M44 whatevers, go with the the "G"s they are wicked nice. as i said before, if you get them from audiolines, they will hook you up with a free extra stylus, that like almost $40 right there. have fun

i'd like to hear some of the complaints.

i've used them several times.
bought my techs from them, my mixer from them about two years ago.
bought some new styli from them last year.
bought new sony headphones from them just about two months ago.

never had a single problem with them.
