LOL...they're actually the same thing. 'Water Pipe' is a safer term used to describe a bong in a headshop so it doesn't sound like you're talking about illegal paraphanalia.

Comparing them to pipes and joints, bongs I think get you more fucked up but for not as long. I guess it's slightly better for you too since the smoke is going through water which acts as a filter.

bongs are water pipes but water pipes arent necessarily bongs. for example a bubbler is a water pipe but not a bong.

as far as effectiveness goes it really depends on the situation you're in..bongs are great for intense single hits which give more of an intense rush high as opposed to a slower acting gradual high you would get from a joint. if i'm with a group of friend i would rather go with a joint or regular pipe cause its easier to share and with bongs and tend to get relly stoned really fast..which is not good for social situations. also i find that water pipes filter out the taste of the bud. This is not good if you're smoking really fine quality buds that taste good, like blueberry or grapfruit.
here is ordinal scale of intensity 1, being the slowest acting and 5 being the most fast/intense.

joints 1
vaporizers/pipes/bubblers 2-3
bongs 4
gravity bongs 5

I wouldn't say that vaporizers are 2 on a scale of 5...maybe the vaporizer you smoked out of wasn't really great, but I found that vapos get me really realy high...not as bad as GBs, but pretty damn close.

but i like my bubbler the best, such nice hits, and so smooth. bongs are nice too, but usually burn too quick, standard joints and bowls are always a regular thing anyway
