Me or my decks?

If somebody could clear this up for me I would feel better, the thing is, I got some crappy XL500 turntables, and I'm really having trouble matching beats now, I've been going like this for awhile now, but I have a hard time keeping them matched for just afew seconds, and well if you look at the strobe dots, when set at 0 pitch, they very slightly shoot forward then stop then forward again, I just wanna know if that would make a big enough problem to make it so much harder to beatmatch?

oh and just so you know, I'm 21 now, and been DJing since I was like 12, when I was 15 I was amazing cos I used Techs allot, so also I just wanna know, can people loose there skill after awhile aswell.

how long have you not been djing? (it seems as if you havent DJed in a while)

skill can decrease over time, but usually, it will come right back to you within one or two transitions. but the longer you go without djing, the longer it will take you to get re-accustomed to it.

it could be a combination of both.

but, you might have to re-learn a little if you have to deal with xl-500s. but supposedly, if you learn to master spinning on those, you can spin on anything. (so even if it is just the gear, it will probably be more helpful to you in the long run)

Thanks man, I've been DJing since I was 12, I stopped for like a year, about 3 years ago, then got back into it with these decks, I have never really been as good as I was back then, but I was good, and well over time I seemed to of gotten worse, I just dunno anymore, I got a headache, I know what you mean about using crappy decks then going onto better decks, I learned on some second hand belt drive Soundlabs, but I managed to get used to constantly making adjustments and when I finally got on Techs, I amazed myself, but I'm not even as good on these as I was on my older Soundlabs, and these are surely a thousand times better than them, like these are direct drive at least, I just wish I could get onto some Techs and see if its me or the decks, I'm currently looking at getting techs soon, hopefully I will and hopefully its just my decks that were the problem, but still any info about if minor fluctuations like I said before can really make a big bad difference will help.

I would probably wager that you're out of practice.

I'm no PVD, but I had been spending a fair bit of time spinning since I first bought my tables at the beginning of the year. Then I stopped for a bit (a month or two). It was pretty stunning how much polish I lost in such a short time - I could barely mix.

Moral of the story - I'm going to keep practicing on a regular basis, even if school + work means that my practice time is limited.

That would be a HUGE problem. When the pitch is at 0, the strobes should always remain stationary. If not, every time they jump, it's going to mess up your mix. I don't know if these have a switch for European/US voltage, but I know that you get a similar behavior with 1200s in the US if you have it set to European voltage (the switch looks like a screw under the platter on 1200s, may be similar for you).

what kiragan says is very true. those strobes should not be moving AT ALL. i also stopped playing for a bit because of full ib shit and basketball, and when i tried to mix it was shiat. after 2-3 mixes it was dead on again though. keep practicing. and get the motor checked out. better yet, get new tables.

thanks people for the responces, I don't thinks its a voltage problem cos I bought them here, and I DJ allot and have been for afew months now, before that I didn't do much for a year, and before that I had about a year break, I'm gonna try and get some good ol Techs again, and that way I will be able to find out if its me or the crappy decks I have now.

Well I bought both of my Technics in the US (one from Mars[RIP] and one from Musician's Friend), and both were set to European voltage. The reason for this is apparently that being set to European in the US just causes this behavior, while being set to US power in Europe can fry the motor. So I think they all come set to European. Just FYI.

Didn't know that, thanks for the info, I will check in abit.
