Recreating Bassline - stuttery / delayed harder

Hi everyone.

Im looking to pick some peoples brains here for a specific bassline sound / programming.

If you've heard of these tunes / producers it will give you an idea of what im searching for:

agnelli & nelson - holding onto nothing - MAIN ONE
cosmicman / matti laamanen
green court remix of ligaya
pulsar remix of matt darey beautiful
flutlicht - the fall rather than ahmea

For those that dont know its a kind of rolling, dark, stuttery + energetic bassline.

It sounds like the volume is moving, so env on the filter??? or clever delay tricks?

Ive come sort of close by running a low vaz bass off beat, then adding a triplet delayed higher saw bass playing over the top. But ive never managed the 'wall of sound' fat wobbly saw'ness that im after.

ive tried to use the most descriptive words i can to get across what im after. But i think it might be a lost cause.

Thanks for any help!!!

Um Dont Really Know What Your After But When I do rolling bass lines thers a few you can do

ok this first time ive done a picture like this

k is for kick

b is for bass

_ is a break

ok heres number 1

k_bbk_bbk_bbk_bb Thats Yakooza Bass.

Number 2 The First Bass note is 1/4 the length of the second bass note

k_bBk_bBk_bBk_bass this is just a standerd sorta hard bass line.

Experiment With this to get what you want.

hope that helps you i dont know if u allready know all that but i just hate to see someone's post go unreplyed.

Thanks Dj Dems, actually i did know about bassline notes like that, but thanks for suggesting. I think i need to get the right blend of notation, sound and fx to get the feel im looking for, but these clips might help someone get a few ideas, hopefully.

Ok, here are a few clips of similar styles. They are around 100 -200kb each

Ok... After listening closely to each one of the samples, I can see that the basslines are actually composed of 2 bass synths or more for each one of them.... Usually, you have the deep bass play only a couple notes in a bar while the higher bass plays the "filler" that drives the bass... Best way to hear this is from the 2nd last sample... At first, both bases are played, then the deeper bass is cut out and you can clearly hear how the treble is done...

As for the bass sounds, most of them seem to be from square waveforms and they don't seem to have a filter envelope (i may be wrong but just what i think it sounds like)

hope that helps

^^^ this is probably not what you want to achieve but I layered 2 samples for the bass, used a bit of delay and did some careful arrangement to the bass notes. It doesn't sound too good b/c it was recorded straight out of Reason with no compression or processing to the bass.

Like some of them already said, it's a matter of cutting up the notes and layering a few bass samples. Don't forget that COMPRESSION will definitely help you to get a clearer defined, punchier bass sound. If you don't use compression your track will most likely sound horrible and muddy when played in a good system. Compression on bass and kicks is VERY VERY important.

Here's something very similar to the bass in Agnelli & Nelson - Nothing.

As other people have mentioned, there are two different layers of bass going on here.

http://flamevault.com/~celerity/an_delay.mp3
This is the filtered out delay bass. It starts at around 4000hz and moves down to around 750hz. The pattern is a simple FFFxFFFxFFFxFFFx, where F is the note and x is a stop, with a 2 tick delay on the right channel and a 3 tick delay on the left channel.

http://flamevault.com/~celerity/an_sub.mp3
Next we have the sub-bass, this is incredibly simple. They filter it in as well, but I was too lazy to do that.

Together, with a kick, this is how it sounds.

Hope that helps.

I did something... Maybe its close to the bassline you put here... but it's not 100% the same because its not easy to understand the structure of the bassline from the sample you gave.... if you can find another part from the track with the bassline only, it will be easier...

Anyway,
this is my sample

included 3 basslines, one of them is the main one...

i've some other samples from the track.. perhaps you can hear the structure better here.

Oh, now its better.
If it's the map:
K = kick
_ = space
b = bass

So, it's K__bbK__bbK__bbK__bb
Here is the sample:

the sample is very nice..

but i can't recreate such a drive with the bassdrum and bassline.. i think it's the delay and the kind of synth..

which synth did you use?

Posted by Shahar on Dec-29-2003 21:28:

a private sample.. but you can create one with subtractor, or any bassline you want with low Freq.. something like 30..

Shahar, cool sample!!!

Whit what U made it?

I'm a bit of a compression n00b so bear with me here--is it better to compress the kick and bass separately, or as one?

Actually I think there is 2 basses in that line too.

On top there is a 303 like bass going K_bbK_bbK_bb
but there is also a sub bass underneath hitting the 1/4th at K_b_K_b

This technique would be used to equal the Kick with the sub bass while still get the driving tempo of the 303 structure. The 303 is just a layer that shouldn't have too much bassfreq (although some), so that it doesn't mess up the whole tune, thus the subbass to equal out the Kick drum... ok, so everyone knew this :P

seperately. Here is a tutorial for kickdrum that is quite explainative:

On the end of this toturial there is a section on compressing the kick.

Other than that it is all about experimenting and listen after what sounds good...
