Propaganda in cartoons?

Hi all! Me and my friends are doing a schoolreport about propaganda, and right now we are looking for propaganda used in cartoon movies. We have searched the internet but we haven't found much information about it.. I hope you can contribute to our list!
So far we have found these:

- Scooby Doo (hidden drug propaganda, I've only read speculations about it though)
- Popeye (WWII propaganda)
- The Smurfs (Marxism propaganda, speculations)
- Looney Toons (WWII propaganda, I haven't seen the episode(s), only read about it/them)

If you know any more, please tell! All kinds of propaganda (war, drug, products, etc) is fine. URL's with info/videoclips would be much appreciated.

thanks

Maybe Izzy or TranceGiant can help me with this

there was\ still is
a very coool cartooon about a duck called "Shailtiel Kwak" (but i'm sure its only a hebrew name for the duck, not the original)
that duck lives in a shoe boot...and there is a mole is like his father....also the duck has a black girlfriend...
i realy like that one
maybe someone can help me and say whats the name of that cartoon in other countries

anyway, there were some very prominent clues from WWII in some of it chapters, with another crow named Dolf that was kinda bad and tried to take over the country with his militia

Alfred J. Kwak

Dutch cartoon. I watched it the other day again (when I saw it at the age of 7 I couldn't have recognized all of its political reerences) and was pretty shocked to see Hitler-like birds and such. Pretty cruel if you ask me Must have traumatized me subconsciously

Kwak the Duck

Ze Hitlerrrr

The mole, his little blind chess-loving father (thos prducers must have had too many joints)

Without doing a google search right off, the purpose of a number of cartoons that were created, like Looney Tunes, was to take the collective minds of civilians away during WWII. There are a number of LT cartoons that show support somewhat for war themes as well, which might fit your propaganda agenda a little more. Looney Tunes were, in fact, created not so much for kids, but for adults. From what I remember reading somewhere, cartoons followed Flash News (news about the War front), and preceeded the movies in movie theatres. I would start your search with the history of Looney Tune cartoon creation (as well as Popeye, I suspect) and go from there.

I'm a huge cartoon junkie, esp. Looney Tunes. I know there are a number of Bugs Bunny cartoons that specifically deal with War themes (the draft for example), though I can't remember the exact names of the cartoons themselves.

when the smurfs first came out conservative christian groups accused its maker of promoting satanic and occultist behavior (witchcraft, psychedelic mushrooms, the names Azriel and Gargamel, etc. being linked to occultist tenets. This later evolved into a marxist critique on the grounds that these "godless" smurfs lived on a commune and blindly obeyed an authoritarian svengali with a red hat). Groups today attack Harry Potter on similar grounds of irreligiosity.

-and the drug propaganda in scooby doo is way obvious: shaggy haired stoner and his talking dog munch on "scooby snacks" while chasing ghosts with their buddies in a hippied-out VW van?

LOL @ the smurfs, I never thought anything about it, except for of course Scooby Doo

There is some great thinking that has been done on the Smurfs which really makes me think it's a Marxist based society--do some web searching, it makes for an interesting read.

To my main point:
Yes--the old Looney Tunes cartoons (Many of which are no longer on the air for obvious reasons) from the 30's and 40's are chock full of propoganda. Hell, much of today's stuff probably is too, we just haven't had enough time to look at it in historical perspective. The WWII/Nazi messages are quite strong, as well as some cowboys/indians type stuff. I remember a lot of the Popeye cartoons pushed the envelope a bit. Probably hard to find the stuff nowadays, as I'm sure Disney would like to keep them on the D.L.

Rocky and Bowinkle had a lot of political type stuff in it.

Sorry to revive a dead post, but I was surfing and I remembered this thread. Here's some cartoon propoganda for you!

Disney or Looney Toons?

Well The Smurfs came out of Holland or Belgium - not sure which but I would bet the first, and that may explain some of the Marxist leanings as many N European countries embrace elements of Socialism (as, I am sure, a Swede is well aware)

Family Guy - Road to Europe has some interestingly hilarious moments when visiting the Mid East and Germany, et al - but i think it hardly constitutes propaganda...

Poland invited us!! Punch was served! Check with Poland!|

"If the USA was....then why can't we say what we want"???

Haha. Say what you want about the biased press in the US, but I somehow doubt that free speech is constitutionalized in North Korea.

Of course not, but its not North Korea's fault! Didn't you learn anything... Its all because of the damn Americans that the North Koreans don't have free speech.. fooking USA!
