Your top 5 compilations/albums/sets for the year 2003? My list with reviews inside
Okay friends, time to compile a list of your favorite mixes of the past year. I know the year it's not completely over, but it's going to an end. I haven't heard all mixes this year, and noone will, so respect eachothers lists by not flaming eachother.
List will be updated when I change my mind.
Music = life!
Compilations
1) James Holden - balance 005

One masterpiece of a compilation, blew me away when I first heard it, it's.....hypnotical, perfectly mixed, and takes you high
Cd1 is one of the best mixes I ever heard
2) Danny Howells - 24/7

Could have been my n1 if balance 005 wasn't there, it's almost as good, disk 2 is the one that stands out, with the absolutely brilliant techno gem Laurent Garnier - Sambu, it's one amazing end to an almost perfect compilation
3) James Zabiela - sound in motion

A genre a little bit different to my style of music, but very well done by one of the year's revelations in the dance-scene.
4) Steve Lawler - Lights Out 2

Tribal?Techno?Progressive house? Electro? I don'know what I should call it...it's....I guess.....Steve Lawler, the mix hass it all, amazing compilation by the man.
5) Global underground - electric calm 2 - mixed by the forth

If you wanna fly away far away from life's stressful pain, lay down on your bed, close your eyes, listen to this mix, and concentrate on the blissfull sounds that are layered together into a journey far away from your daily life.
Livesets/promo mixes
1) CP (BedrockRec) Mix Session (Sep,2003)
Well, this is it, this is just perfect, no words can describe how good this is, cp, another revelation as a dj to the progressive scene.
He already amazed me with his warmup for Digweed in the Fuse, but this is it. With Medway - trauma (one of the best tracks of the year for me) this set is pure gold, nothing can beat this for 2003
2) Naveen G - Seasons Change (Darker Shades, 05-1-03)
Another hauntingly beautiful mix in the style of cp's mix.
I would say, give it a listen and enter the darker shades.
3) Markus Schulz Live At Space34 (Party931) July 4th 2003 Afterparty
Markus, my man, great mix is this, thank you for the many listens I got from this. It's like the more commercial side of progressive...but nonetheless amazing.
4) Deep Dish Live at Space Miami(Dec-22-2002)
Yeah I know it's from 2002, but I needed to put it in my list.
Awsome mix, I would have liked that gu 025 would be as good as this, but it failed, this is far better, with sultan - nightvisions as one of the best this year's.
5) Jonathan Ojeda - Kiss 100 (Apr 18 2003)
60 minutes mix on digweed show, gave me chills
6) Danny Howells - live at club redlight
3 hours set from world's most anticipated dj's, I don't need to explain this mix, you heard it all...
Essential mixes
1) Moshic - essential mix 2003
Moshic, dark, haunting, whatever, it's stunning
2) Gabriel & Dresden - essential mix
Refreshing, all g&d material, respect for those guys, they did a great mix!
3) Adam Freeland EM 2003-05-11
It's different, really....
It's special, radiohead - ideotheque, hmmmmm, I love it.
4) Ashley Casselle - essential mix
2 parts, the first housey, the second proggie, amazing end!
4) High contrast - essential mix
Drum&bass to a higher dimension, I loved it!
5) Sander Kleinenberg - essential mix
Sander K needs no introduction, His 2001 mix was better, but this one is great to with Dub pistols and black pearl - baracuda
There are so many more I forgot, I actually need to listen to all I got to compile a list, but for now, this is what I got from the mind
All the albums I still need to get
thx for the review

Ill just quickly review my top 5 albums/compilations this year:
1. Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians
This album has 2 cds. The first one has that magical Psy sound that make Infected Mushroom became the leaders of the Goa scene. But the second album is just impossible to describe, it seems to fusion every musical genre existant into a single journey, possibly the most original album EVER.
2. James Holden - Balance 005
For some reason I never liked progressive but then I heard this album and I'm becoming addicted.
3. Kai Tracid - Contemplate The Reason You Exist
Being this an artist album, Kai Tracid did an amazing job here by combining his usual hard style with chill-out and epic songs, never losing the transcendental melodies he always creates.
4. DJ Tiesto - Nyana
Tiesto NEVER dissapoints about tracklistings. The Indoor CD is basically the next In Search Of Sunrise, perfectly mixed. And the Outdoor CD is also a perfectly mixed compilation where he shows his actual style, travelling from genre to genre... and Nyana, the tune!
5. System F - Together
I really like a couple of tracks from Ferry's Right of Way, but I prefer the ultra-uplifting System F style he used in Together. Yeah the tracks are too short but this is the real style I would expect from Ferry, excellent artist album from start to end.
excellent reviews Tranceseeker. i must have another listen to the cds i have just because you made them sound so much better lol
Howells 24-7 is outstanding! Question is the tracklist mislabeled for disc 2?
cool review. i cant even think of 5 albums that i've actually liked at all this year, let alone getting into a top 5 list.
tough year mikey?
I dont think Ill get 5
James Zabiela - Sound In Motion
James Holedn - Balance 005
Anjunabeats Vol. 1 just a feel good album
Armin's Universal Religion
My fav set for the year with out a doubt is the G & D EM wat a great mix!!
For albums I think my top five comps for 2003 so far is:
1. GU 025 Deep Dish - Toronto
2. Balance 005 - James Holden
3. Anjunbeats Vol. 1 mixed by Above & Beyond
4. Resonate Vol 2 mixed by The Freak (absolute brilliant hard trance!!)
5. Great Wall - Paul Oakenfold
Tnx for the feedback guys
Great review indeed
My top 5 compilation albums for this year:
1. Paul Oakenfold - Great Wall
2. Everybody - Mixed by Sander Kleinenberg
3. James Holden - Balance 005
4. Laidback Luke - Windmill Skill
5. Tisto - Nyana
And two honourable mentions for producer albums will go to:
Remy - Bang!
Junkie XL - Radio JXL: A Broadcast From The Computer Hell Cabin (7AM Dance/Ambient)
Frankly there's been only two compilations that I've liked and therefore bought this year.
1. James Holden - Balance 005
Just got this last Friday and I have to say it's one of the best comps in years.
2. GU 24 Reykjavik - Nick Warren
A quality mix from Nick. Especially disc 1 is has a really nice mellow flow to it...
Fave set of the year... mmm.. probably Sasha at Creamfields... a lot of people seem to put this down because it has too many big tunes and it's pretty predictable but it still rocks my socks off...
