Monopoly

What's the longest continuous game you've played? Our epic marathon began at abuot 11 last night and didn't finish til 7 this morning.

Surely that's a record?

That's a bit like asking what happens at the end of Lord Of The Rings. It's not really important, it's the journey that counts

Jeff started off strong getting hotels very early on the blue set, I was forced into a lifetime global rent-immunity deal with Mat in exhange for Vine Street to get myself some land.

I was in a sticky situation having both Mayfair and Park Lane but no funding to develope them, and only the cheap brown set with hotels on but at a critical moment Fray got into trouble and I managed to swipe the red set off him in exhange for a cup of tea before he was vanquished.

As you can imagine, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place after these developments. I had property and money to develope, but I couldn't risk putting hotels on anything incase I inadvertantly bankcrupt Jeff, as Mat's rent immunity would mean instant victory by default if it were only us two remaining. Luckily Mat was also in a terrible situation with only the stations and the utility companies providing any income for him... Jeff was laughing all the way to the bank and slowly stripping us of assets. Under the circumstances I had no choice but to agree to part with the pink set including all hotels and a substantial amount of cash in order to cancel the imunity deal with Mat and secure a chance of winning (though this did take a lot of persuasion, namely pointing out to Mat that if he didn't agree I would be forced into agreeing a temporary mutual immunity deal with Jeff and then sitting back until he vanquished Mat, thus sealing Mat's doom).

It was about 4am by this point and things were getting interesting. Total worth-wise, we were all worth about the same. Mat had loads of cash but hardly any income, Jeff had a fuckload of property but no cash and was constantly selling and re-buying houses to pay off debts, and I was somewhere in between.

In a brave move I sold my brown hotels and mortgaged all my property except for the Red and Orange set, and used the income to setup hotels on these, thus ensuring domination of the "Free Parking" corner of the board. It worked and by 6am Mat had slowly surcome to the combined might of myself and Jeff.

It was close between me and Jeff for about 2 hours at the end, we were just moving round the board taking turns to give each other 1000. By 6:30, after one last spliff, it was time for the final battle. The end finally came when Jeff landed on me 3 times in a row on his way through my hood and was forced to sell most of his houses. After that he would have been stuck with claiming 30 rent and paying out over a grand, and victory was mine.

Glad you asked?

Official Tournament rules that we broke last night:

1. To raise money to pay debts, only houses and hotels can be sold back to the bank (at half price), never properties. If a debt is owed to another player, properties may be sold to a third player only if sufficient money is raised to cover the debt. If not, the properties are turned over as is (and not mortgaged if unmortgaged at the time the debt is incurred.)

5. All trades are based on assets owned at the time of the trade. No options or immunity from paying future rents may be granted, nor may partnerships be formed.

8. Players may not consult or seek advice from friends or game observers while the game is in progress.

9. Tokens used in tournament play must be from the game itself.

Some fun facts

The longest game ever played was 1,680 hours long - that's 70 straight days!
Longest game in a bathtub: 99 hours
Longest game underwater: 45 days
Longest game played upside-down: 36 hours

Escape maps, compasses, and files were inserted into MONOPOLY game boards and smuggled into POW camps inside Germany during World War II. Real money for escapees was slipped into the packs of MONOPOLY money.

The largest outdoor game ever played used a gameboard 938 feet wide by 765 feet long. The MONOPOLY contest required approximately a full city block!

The largest indoor game ever played used a gameboard 122 feet by 122 feet in size.

Parker Brothers prints about 50 billion dollars worth of MONOPOLY money in one year.
Ever wonder how much MONOPOLY money comes with a standard set? The total is $15,140.

Each year, the makers of MONOPOLY produce more than twice as much play money as the U.S. Mint does actual money.

i played a game for 6 days with some mates before, that was cool, i came second.

I see it as more of an xmas day / boxing day game more or less.

Posted by Streakfury on Nov-16-2003 22:09:

I've started a game of monopoly at 9 at night, and finished at 7:30 the next morning. And I lost. Damn.

I never seem to win at that game. Everyone else ends up owning half the board and could buy out Bill Gates given half a chance, and I'm just sitting there with nowt!
