Smiley DJ Logic Audio vs Logic Platinum

Not sure if this has been asked before but... is Platinum really worth an extra 500 dollars?

Depends what you want to do and what level you are on.

If you want alot of Tracks, effects etc and have alot of out board gear, hardware and want to automate a shitload then get Platinum

But if your new and dont think you will use alot of the features then you might be waisting the money on platinum as alot of the features will be wasted.

HOWEVER saying that, your gonna need Platinum if you want to ever improve or when you eventualy get familiar with logic and know their is stuff that could be done easier or better etc.

So Platinum is worth it yes

I believe there is a great abundance of effects available in Platinum. Running Platinum 5.5 here in the studio myself. Beware though, since Apple bought Emagic (as you probably know) Windows/PC users have been cut off has it has been discontinued at version 5.5 for the PC platform. Version 6.x is now out on the Mac, with AudioUnits support.

Thanks for the help guys. It's a bit confusing, especially for me not knowing how production programs work, since for Logic there is a solo Platinum edition for 700 dollars, but then you have Logic Audio Big Box that comes with like 5 other music programs, which Platinum doesn't come with, for like 400 bucks less. But oh well, I'm saving up for one of the 2. Nice job on Lost & Delirious by the way! Did you just use Logic for that? Any outside instruments?

No problemo, it's tough making big decisions when it comes to your sequencing platform. It's incredibly important to find a system that works with your working habits. You might also want to look into Cubase SX - I know quite a few composers who are working with it and you have the added advantage of being able to work seamlessly basically with Nuendo.

re Lost & Delirious, do you mean the club mixes or the original?

Hey Ryan, I haven't been able to find the original mix, but I have heard a couple of the club mixes, the Maurice and the Pesh mix, and they sound very good. Did you make the original purely on Logic? Do you recommend Logic or Cubase for starters? I know they're both pretty complex, but I'd rather get one of those than spend extra money on a simpler program I'd have to upgrade sooner or later. Later bud.

Yeah, the original mix of Lost & Delirious is kind of rare, from a concept album called Critical Path that I put out about a year ago. It was indeed done entirely in Logic Platinum and in fact I still use Logic Platinum (now v5.5, which is much more powerful) for all of my production work. I would probably find it hard to switch to anything else now, because Logic has become such an integral part of how I work. IMHO, it's a true writing tool, especially if you have the environments etc set up in a custom fashion to streamline your workflow.

Also, Logic was the tool of choice for Critical Path - I say it was a concept album essentially because the idea behind it was to create a release that was based entirely in software; that is using plug-ins (a lot of the work and sound design was done in Reaktor, with Kontakt and basically everything else that I could get my hands on to make sounds in software). It'd be fun to create another concept album in this regard as soft-synth technology has advanced a lot more since, but for all of the releases that I'm working on now I'm still powering on all my synths: working with everything from Virus to Kyma (a weird hybrid between software and hardware almost!) But added to them are a lot of my favorite tools which still run seamlessly in both Logic and Cubase SX under the VSTi platform like Reaktor4, Absynth2 (incredible), heaps of sound processing plugs, Kontakt (of course, it keeps getting better) - probably too many to list!!

Ryan.
