salt and pepper shakers

you know how one has one big hole and the other has several smaller holes? which one is for the salt and which one is for the pepper?

Posted by squirrelly on Nov-17-2003 16:57:

I think the salt has two and the pepper three? Thats how we have it in the apartment? But now you have me curious as to if we were wrong.....

Posted by dj_mdma on Nov-17-2003 16:59:

salt = one hole
pepper = many holes.

either that or sniff it and see which one makes you sneeze

Posted by butterfly on Nov-17-2003 17:00:

i thought the single hole was for pepper and more holes was for salt but my bf insists i am wrong.

Posted by andy on Nov-17-2003 17:00:

salt has one hole

Posted by squirrelly on Nov-17-2003 17:01:

Woot! So we are right! I think more holes for pepper because they have bigger flakes?? Salt's so small...

Posted by dj_mdma on Nov-17-2003 17:03:

well ground pepper is a lot more smaller than salt...

hmm.. you're right. I thought about what I just posted and went back and looked. I'm confused. I don't know why they have to be in the shakers they are in....

Who cares!!

everyone puts salt in the multi-holed one. Which is stupid. Because salt isnt that great, and I have found that 90% of people want more pepper than salt. and sit there trying to get the fucking pepper out for like 10 minutes

i use far more salt than pepper.

anyway, my idea from this thread is that you ppl from the uk use the single hole for salt. i cant tell with americans yet.

Salt is bad for you, you should cut back

why is it bad?

anyway, i havent gotten to salt yet. i am still working on cutting out the dairy and sugar.

Great question. I got a pair o shakers (got to post a pic, they are hilarious john deer ones) and one had only one hole while the other had three. Since I never use pepper I only put salt in the multi holed one.

I guess I throw off Orbax's study.

you two are still the vast minority ;D

(CNN) -- Scientists have been fighting over the salt shaker for decades -- ever since early studies linked sodium to high blood pressure.

Many of these studies have since been discontinued, leaving patients confused about how much salt is too much.

Recently, numerous large-scale studies have looked closely at salt and blood pressure and found the problem isn't just too much salt, it's not enough minerals.

"For too long we've ignored the fact that blood pressure regulation is more closely tied to calcium, potassium and magnesium than it ever was to sodium," says Dr. David McCarron of Oregon Health Sciences University.

But don't start pouring on the salt just yet. Many people with high blood pressure still need to cut back on salt.

Dr. David McCarron
"We don't want to abandon the salt message, but we want to expand upon it and say that there are other things that are important, too," says Chris Rosenbloom of the American Dietetic Association.

considering that most reactions in your body are controlled by mineral charge gates operating on charge differentials, you probably dont want to throw the balance out too much

these are my salt and pepper shakers

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...7992460-7752913

they both have the same number of holes so i put little labels on em. now i know which is salt and which is pepper. i love lotsa pepper on everything, except ice cream lol

Posted by igottaknow on Nov-17-2003 23:07:

do yourself a favor and get a pepper and salt mill. my roomate got me into using the pepper ball, once you use it you'll never go back to pre-ground pepper

Posted by butterfly on Nov-17-2003 23:09:

actually we have a pepper mill and we put salt in both of the other shakers. but i mean conventially, where should each go.

you want answers... you cant handle the truth... here u go...

quote:
Question:

Which shaker is used for salt and which for pepper (in terms of the number of holes)?

Answer:

Protocol and Etiquette Consultant John G. Robertson responds: The salt shaker may be distinguished primarily by the size of the holes, and then by the number of holes. Salt is coarser than pepper, and needs the larger hole. It is also heavier and flows much more freely than pepper, accordingly there are often fewer holes on the salt shaker to help control the flow. However, there is no manufacturing standard.

so now u know and knowing is half the battle

Salt = 1 hole
Pepper = Many holes.

For sure. If you use ground pepper and put it in the shaker with one hole, it's doesn't come out properly because it clumps together. Salt is in grains so it comes out no probs...
