Trying to get a 303 sound
This is the 303 sound that's always done it for me:

Does anyone know what combination of 303 settings and distortion I need to re-create it?

Yeah man, that's not too hard. Are you using a TB or a clone? Cos clones tend to not be so great at getting that sound.
Tune - About 12 o'clock
Cutoff - Start at 7 o'clock and move clockwise to make it squeel
Resonance - 5 o'clock
Envelope Modulation - 12:30
Decay - 11:30
Accent - Only to be used if you want certain notes more pronounced than others. Using accent is good for making that "wow" sound.
Distortion is the key. I use rebirth myself, where amount would be about 3 o'clock while shape would be at 9 o'clock. These setting should end up with that sound. Its just a matter of getting the notes right.
Also, if you're into 303's, have a listen to my lastest track, its packed full of em.

Actually, you might want to make the decay a little higher as well. Will give it more of a lead sound than the traditional 303 pop.
delay and distortion is teh key here...ive done some 303 work and got some real phat acid sounds before with the 3xosc
theres some tutorial in fl that tells u how to make a 303 with a meer 3xosc
Wow...That was nice 303 sound
So...eerrmm... U make 303 sound with Fruity Loops?
Damn, dude! The only foldback distortion I have access to is in Reason. And that has no audio input. I know I could sample and drop it into a NN19, but that's not a very creative way of working.
So, anyone know any good foldback distortion plugins? DX or VST, preferably freeware/shareware but I'll consider commercial...
Heh, I even got a guitar pedal specially. Overdrive and distortion...
It sounds really good, but it's not THAT sound.

3 oscs to get a 303 sound? The 303 only has one oscillator. It would be better to find out the shape of the raw 'saw' and 'square' waves, and the filter characteristics.
You could do it in a good sampler. Just find a sample of an unfiltered 303 with no res, cut out one cycle of the base waveform, load it into the sampler, loop it, and set your filter to 12dB/octave. I think. (Is it 12? 16? I can't remember.) As long as your filter can self-oscillate, you should start to get close.

Tequila, what are you using to make this. Are you using a tb-303?

So...Are U making those 303 sounds with Fruity Loops? I know that there are some 3x osc synths..
if you want really fucked up 303 sounds, dont be afraid to use other waveforms than just teh sawtooth, the square wave often produces rather mint sounds too

What mod does it have. Is it like a devilfish mod. I was under the impression that these were so that you can sync it with something other than a 606 through the midi CV gate, letting you start/stop it, but the notes need to be entered in the 303 itself.
As for using things like 3-osc to make a 303, its not the same. Heaps of synths can make acid sounds, but they won't make a 303 sound. there is a difference between acid and 303.
It's a retrofit. Basically it's got CV inputs for gate, note, and filter cut-off.
I have a device for converting MIDI to gate info.

Is it one of the Kenton midi>CV converters? Are you trying to run patterns or play the notes through a midi keyboard?
While we're on the topic, does anyone know of a good VSTi emulation of a TB-303?

So..No-one wanna answer my question... so I take it NO, U don't use Fruity Loops for making those 303 sounds...
So are U all using tb-303?? And it is hardware?
People still actually like the 303 sound???

You can get so many sounds from a 303 that I dont know what a 303 sound really is.

Damn, I don't have money to buy Rebirth
But I really would LOVE to get those 303 sounds... Anyone know good trix how to get them out of Fruity or Reason?
You won't get it out of fruity mate. My production partner has been trying for years making psy and acid on fruity. He gets some amazinf sounds out of the Ts-404 but it doesn't compare to a 303. As I said earlier, you can get "acid" sounds out of a lot of machines, but you won't get a 303 out of them. I've tried Tau and wasn't impressed.
There was a 303 software synth attempt in the last issue of Computer music mag, its basic but it sounds 303ish,
I always use one of the sounds from the 'ModWhl Seq. Sounds' Folder in Albino for my 303 sounds
Yeah, I saw that. CM-303 or something. I was made by the same guys that make Tau Bassline and Tau Pro. Considering it was free with the mag, I fail to see how it could be better than the paid for version of Tau Pro, though I have not listened to it yet.
There are so many 303 clones out there. Its amazing how hard it can be to replicate something made 20 years ago.
