"The competition lasted 30, perhaps 40 minutes and the winner downed three half-liter bottles. He was taken home by taxi but died within 20 minutes," said Roman Popov, a prosecutor pursuing the case in the town of Volgodonsk.

"Five contestants ended up in intensive care. Those not in hospital turned up the next day, ostensibly for another drink."

Popov said the director of the shop organizing this month's contest had been charged with manslaughter. He had offered 10 liters of vodka to the competitor drinking the most in the shortest time.

Russians drink the equivalent of 15 liters of pure alcohol per head annually, one of the highest rates in the world. Some experts estimate one in seven Russians is an alcoholic.

it was a very alike accident in lithuania 2months ago: there was a bet, that whoever drinks a 0.75litre 'lithuanian vodka' [vol45] WITH ONE GULP [ without breathing] wins 20� [double WHAT THE FUCK? he should probably win a villa-magna on mediterranean 4 that]. a man drank the vodka in less than 25secs and almost instantly lost his consciousness... i'm surprised that doctors saved him. the man said he won't take his winnings (20�), but he said that never give up drinking.

Reminds me of my teenage years when one of my friends downed a bottle of Bacardi 151 in two swallows as a show of machismo. At least we had the sense to forcibly make him throw it up, else he would have died or gone blind at a minimum. The human body can only take so much alcohol at once. In great quantities, it's toxic. In smaller quantities, like right now as I'm guzzling beer, it's OK!! I guess??
