Sasha Goes 'Global' With New Series
Edited By Jonathan Cohen. November 21, 2003, 4:00 PM ET

British DJ/producer Sasha is not yet ready to embark on the creative process for his second proper artist album, nor does he want to deliver "just another" DJ-mix compilation. But he does want to remain in the mix, and a new deal with globally renowned dance/electronic label Global Underground (GU) will give him the freedom to do just that.

In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Sasha says he will be compiling three volumes -- possibly five -- for a new, as-yet-untitled GU DJ series. Each beat-mixed release in the new series, which debuts in April 2004, will spotlight exclusive Sasha remixes and re-edits, as well as unreleased, original Sasha productions.

In this way, each CD will be part-DJ mix, part-remix album and part-artist album (Sasha's debut artist album, "Airdrawndagger," was released last year). "After doing DJ mixes for the past 12 years, the thought of doing another one was not thrilling any of my buttons," Sasha explains. That is, until he and GU director Andy Horsfield began laying down the foundation for the new series. "It's an exciting concept," says Sasha, who is signed to BMG U.K. for artist albums. "I see it as a definite progression -- an evolution -- in my career."

For Sasha, such a series further blurs the boundaries between artist and DJ. "This is something we've been attempting to do for 15 years, since the whole DJ phenomenon occurred," he says.

Prior to the debut disc's release, Sasha will embark on a three-city tour of Los Angeles, New York and Park City, Utah, where he will play private shows for press, the music industry and tastemakers. The Park City date coincides with the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, where GU will utilize its first party at the 10-day event to introduce Sasha to the movers and shakers of the movie industry.

A more comprehensive North American trek will follow in March, culminating in an event at the annual Winter Music Conference, held in Miami in March. This may be followed by a Delta Heavy 2004 tour, the follow-up to the Delta Heavy 2002 tour, which featured Sasha and John Digweed as the headliners.

While nothing is confirmed, Delta Heavy 2004 is "in the cards," Sasha notes. "We have a rough outline. We're figuring out the concept."

thanks to DJ Tim Roberts from GU's forum who posted this article.

edit fixed the estimated release date of April 2004 (which was 2000)

i quite enjoyed charlie may & junkie xl - airdrawndagger, so this new charlie may & jxl project looks quite tasty. i wonder why they keep calling themselves sasha though

dude...even though Charlie May and Junkie XL have had a good part in ADD, as well as Sasha, he did have a lot of input and effect on the productions. You can't say that Boileroom is just a Junkie XL track with Sasha's name on it. Sasha had a lot of influence on the "sound" of the tracks as well.

And don't think that I'm discrediting Charlie May or Junkie XL because they're amazing producers and barely anybody can touch them talent-wise. But don't say that ADD is their album and Sasha just slapped his name on it.

Posted by Proximus on Nov-22-2003 02:13:

i bet you like charlie may - xpander as well....

or did you like andy grays album bunkka? or steve osbornes song hypnotised??

big djs like sasha, oakenfold, tiesto, digweed, are just franchise... there are alot of talented people behind them who make their tracks..

Posted by DJPrototypeX on Nov-22-2003 02:18:

great news...cant wait for those babies

Posted by infinity HiGH on Nov-22-2003 02:18:

And you would know how, that they do fuckall and let everyone do everything for them? Do you watch the track get made? I know that a lot of big DJ's have someone help them do the tracks because they don't have the time to do it all themselves; but you're just exaggerating it a bit.

Please...just shutup. You're obviously looking to start some stupid attention-whoring argument. I got better things to do

Posted by montie on Nov-22-2003 02:38:

i agree that it was pretty much carlie may and junkie xl behind the technical work in ADD
(more charlie than anyone else i would say is behind sasha's productions), but it was all pretty much a collaboration.
they all had their say in it. no one person was responsble for teh tracks.

Thumbs up

Wonderfull news, Sasha won't dissapoint.

sounds good...quality music to look forward to!
let's not forget this concept is not entirely new and give due credit to paul van dyk for P.O.D.

and how do you know?
maybe they cant do the whole thing themselves becasue they just cant. why did tiesto get help on a lot of his tracks from the album. perhaps becasue he wanted to do them a certain way and couldnt? i am not sure. i personally dont care who makes the tracks as long as they sound good and all the people responsible are credited in the notes. but a lot of people who just listen to trance, make a big name for a lot of these people who dont make the tracks all themselves. then you have someone who alwasy helps and artist to do a track adn they come otu wiht their own kick ass project and get little recognition.

people like you shit me, you have no fucking idea

SWEET! I'm not quite sure exactly what is going to be released though? ( I skimmed the announcement). Is it a mix cd or artist album or some sort of hybrid?

man, thats what I said in the rest of my post. Charlie May is fuckin awesome and his remix is one of my all-time fav tracks (orbital - illuminate). I never said that Sasha is more capable or puts out better stuff than him, or XL. What I'm saying is that even though Xpander, Wavy Gravy, Magnetic North, Baja...and so on, wouldn't be what they are without Sasha's input; just like they wouldn't be what they are without C. May's capabilities. Sasha had the vision, had the idea's, and with the help of great talents like May and XL they were realized. That doesn't mean that Sasha told them to make a bunch of tracks and they did them; they're all equally responsible. That's all

shitstorm aside,
im hell looking forward to this

Ever better than the GU compilation I was hoping for.

This is great, great, great news.

its wonderful, I'm a dickhead for saying Charlie May is behind the stuff that Sasha puts his name on, I say I know this, but you guys are not dickheads because you claim Sasha is mostly behind the stuff, how come you know that and I don't know what I'm talking about?

Funny

Charlie May is a studio engineer. A studio engineer presses buttons & twiddles knobs upon instruction.

I don't know of anyone who produces in a studio, who doesnt have an engineer present (unless of course they are one themselves).

Posted by torontotrance on Nov-22-2003 16:10:

why do ppl forget that david forbes was also the studio engineer for the xpander ep.

anyway...I think it will be good for sasha to release these things. Release some of the stuff that he only played in his gigs.....i bet certain ppl hope that a)he will release the NYE mix of heaven scent...if he did not destroy the DAT.

I don't give a shit who makes 'em, all I know is that if it says Sasha on it, it'll be good.

I am curious though, if Charlie May helps Sasha out then who, if anyone, fills a similar role for John Digweed?

Delta Heavy 2004!!!!

Posted by Rakoon on Nov-22-2003 20:45:

Its like politics of dance meet vorsprung dyk technik This looks promising though, I definately look forward to it. I loved airdrawndagger and I love global underground, so it may actually convince me to buy a mix CD for once.
