When and How to use backspin?

Can someone give me detailed examples of when they would use backspin? do you just use backspin to get the cool sound effect? do you let the record you backspun play or do you turn it down after you've done it? if you backspin from a transition from record a to record b, you backspin a, right? or do you just use the 3rd turntable? (like we all spin with 3 tables...

i wont touch upon doing it with 3 tables, as i don't know how nor do most people have 3 tables.

heres what i do.
i either use it to end a set, with echo on. and thats a cool effect.
in the set, i match a and b in the cans. a is playing. then when u wanna kill record a, backspin it real hard (but be soft, don't bounce the needle), and with the fader go from a to be. the speed of the fader and timing of the fader is preference. like you can come in from 100% a to 100% b. or u can be at 77a 33b and spin it over. or whatever u like. I like using it when i have two songs which have really complicated beats and even if you mange to match em up still sound wierd. the nice thing is if you don't know how to match the beats at all. just get em somewhat same bpm and backspin and whos to know.... =) just dont do it every time or ull sound like a lost rapper

anyone do it other ways?

y doenst someone do it and post it up so we can hear it.....i for one an curious how it will sound......

I'll try to post a sample of my basic backspin later today. I never use it on mix-CDs,though. Just at parties...

Is there a certain time you start the backspin...so you time it to bring the new track in right on a new measure or set of beats...or just whenever?

On that clip, when did you start bringing in the new song? Was it playing before the backspin? Did you fade it in during the backspin? Or slam it in twards the end of the backspin?

im not too sure either EXACTLY how to do this, but ive seen it done for d&b and it fits really well.... never heard it in "trance form" tho...

The new song was brought in at 0:14 sec. I then turned the bass off the old song down and the new one up at 0:27 sec., turned the volume of the old record down about 25% (they are much louder when you backspin) and slammed the fader when the new melody sets in.
Watch out that you don't leave the old record in longer than the backspin, cause it will be off beat and start slow (even on technics)!

i was expecting something VERY more subtle.. the kind of slow spinning "atmospheric" effect you get w/ drum'n bass

well I got so many PMs and E-mails about the second track I used in the sample, so for all that are still interested and didn't ask: It is DJ Ufuk - R2D2 (DJ Ufuk Mix). Kinda old but I love it and still play it in many sets...

damn, that was sweet, the first one with r2d2
although all the typing it out doesn't give me a clear picture about what's going on, i'd have to see it for myself

u usually dont use backspins in Trance....... its mostly a Techno/technhouse they use it a lot....... usually when u in transition of mixing into a nothing song with a build up u throw a backspin with the last record right before u cross over...... but iu never put a backspin on the record thats the main one playing then it sounds fucked up..... and u have to make sure u back spin the record at a good point so it sounds very contrasted so its like very noticeable in the mix!

One of my tricks is when you are for beats before where you drop in the second tune,you rock the second record back and forward over the cue point,and keep the x-fader on the first track with every on-beat,and throw it half way over on every off-beat,giving u a very nice little change over effect,although its a bitch to master ill admit,its like patting your head while rubbing your tummy while unicycleing through a mine feild!

i guess you mean four beats? Although your description is difficult to read, I know what you are doing. I have seen Westbam do exactly this quite often and I'm always impressed how well he nails it. The major difficulty is hitting the beat exactly when you finally let go of the new record. I would never use this in a live situation, cause I'm far away from mastering it (I haven't practiced this for a long time).

I agree that a little sample would clear things up! Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

well, it IS used in Trance sets... listen to Tiesto @ Dance Valley,
at 11:02 he backspins shortly the 'beat-record' and after that a break... after 32 beats he turns on the sound of the new beat...

Carl Cox did this a lot when i saw him here in Atl. It was pretty cool but got kinda old when he did it on every other song.

tiesto did a backspin in his sensation 2000 set
jean at sensation 2001

jean also used one in trance energy 2000 and mysteryland 2000
both were done pretty nicely IMO.
