So.. I could get a laptop for christmas

I just want to know what you guys are using and how satisfied you are. I'm looking for a notebook at around the $1000 range. I need a HD with at least 40 GB, and a decent video card that can play games from a several years ago. Battery life is important, because I plan on doing a lot of wireless.. uhh.. work. Which brings me to my next criterion, I don't really want an internal wireless network card, because I want one whose antenna can be tweaked easily.

Any suggestions?

This looks like a great deal, I don't know if there's a catch.

Go work at a best buy. youll get 5% above cost and insanely cheap performance plans. PERF PLANS COVER BATTERIES! ITS AWESOME! if you work during holidays the discount is effective immediately. So go buy one from BB even if you dont work there

nice idea orbax, but unfortunatly for best buy employees (trust me, i am one) the mark-up on computers is only like 7 or 8 %, so on a $2000 laptop you might save like $50, and employees aren't eligable for rebates, so its actually cheaper for regular customers, or for employees to not use thir discount. altough you are right about the service plans, we get those usually 60-80% off, and yes we do cover bateries and LCD screens with out service plans. it is a really cool place to work, at least my store is.

1. get a Pentium M, not a P4M or a P3M, get a Pentium M, the thing doesn't use a lot of power, comes with 1 MB cache (nice) and is faster clock/clock than then P4. My Pentium M ~1.3GHz runs faster than a 2GHz P4.

2. why on earth would you need 40GB+ of HDD space? get a 20/30 gig internal drive and buy a firewire/ USB2 case and a cheapo 160/ 200 GB hdd.. then you have storage/ yet your laptop is 'cheap'

3. if you want a lot of 'mobility' for your laptop, you want as much stuff internally as possible, since anything protruding from a laptop is a pain -imho.

get a dell , there laptops are cheap and reliable. there deals sometime are too good to resist. if u get one go check fatwallet.com regularly. they post good deals regularly. i got my second laptop for under 300 and new but not from dell. i would get one with a pentium M, radeon9000 or 9600, 512 or more ram, 30-40 gigs, a 14 or 15" at least 1280x1024, dvd+-r/w and cdrw, and under 5 lbs.

i got my dell Latitude D600 this summer.. 30GB, radeon 9000, 256MB (got extra ram from crucial for 1/2 the dell price), cd-rw, bluetooth, 802.11g, 13" (I think) and light as hell

Those laptop spec's are good. You might want to keep in mind though that LCD screens have native res. I.E. if your native res is 1600X1200 your screen will look really really small, and if you change from your native res your screen will look horrible, Games will also have to run at that res or they will also look horrible. For ram 128 or 256 works you wont really use 512 on a laptop, and the better the vid card on a laptop the more power it will use up. Also if you buy a laptop from a best buy or comp usa buy the extended warranty, laptops have a good tendency to break and be really expensive to fix. As for laptop brands I like Dell's support a lot, I called them up 'cause my screen burned out and they had a guy come and take it to be fixed 2 hours latter, Sony and HP/Compaq have horrible support, 2 of my friends had to wait up to 1 month to get there laptops looked at. Toshiba is known for there great laptops, and from what I have seen of Fujitsu they aren't that bad. Oh don't get a Gateway laptop they break way to easily.

Also on batteries keep in mind if you use them a lot they lose there charge in about a year to two years

I'm interested in the new Apple iBook G4 12", comes with a lot of features and the cost is very good for it. They are $1500 CDN but if you are a student you can get one for $1350.

Posted by Hg-203 on Nov-28-2003 17:24:

That one looks nice, the only thing I would add on it would be Office, if possable I would use an old version of office no the new one it just costs too much, also I would get that 3 year mail in warrinty for $170.
