'Give me a fucking I-POD rite now SANTA CLAUS.'

I've had 4 of them.... they are amazing! Best invention. If you have access to your music library pretty regularly (i.e. you are not away from your computer for weeks at a time) get the 20GB model... I have the 30GB which was very useful for when I was backpacking through Europe for 9 weeks but now that I am back home and use my computer everyday I wish I had the 20GB model because A) it's cheaper and B) it's thinner.

Get one!

Check out support.apple.com for info about them... some are kindy screwy if you don't use them correctly... definitely use it with iTunes!!! No other program compares in compatibility.

Posted by SuperFarStucker on Nov-24-2003 04:36:

there seems to be a few problems with them

* irreplacable batteries
* overpriced (nomad zen is like 25% cheaper)
* weak headphone amp
* jacks bust in them
* firmware bugs (playback irregularities in older models)
* cannot use on both platforms at the same time (you have to reformat your iPod to use it on a mac if you've been using on pc, etc.), which isn't really a disadvantage considering none of the other ones work on mac at all AFAIK.

I don't own one so I couldn't say if they are that great or not. These are just common complaints of iPod owners (once your battery dies your iPod is garbage btw.. ). I'm not sure how great Nomad Zen's are, especially given creative's abhorrent track record, but they seem to address at least a few of the iPod's issues. Decently sized Nomad Zen's are far cheaper though and have a considerably more powerful headphone amplifier built in, supposedly slightly superior signal quality as well (snr)...

I suspect they are of equal quality
and you are just paying for apple's name. Most apple hardware is overpriced... However, creative tends to make a lot of crap.. some of their stuff is *okay*... best look around to see if there is any major issues with a piece of creative hardware before you lay down money for them.

Get a mp3 CD player and not an Ipod.
They won't skip because they'll be padded by around $200 you save.

Posted by daydreamer on Nov-24-2003 04:44:

i actually have one so here goes.

bought mine more than a year ago. still kicking.
ten or twenty gig is probablly all you going to need.
i love my i pod. no problems here. headphones are ok. i never really blast it to begin with. don't want to ruin my ears.
it takes a while to categorize everything into different genres and shit like that but after you are done enjoy. i heard the zen is cheaper but i don't know about quality.

the ipod i have has been great. definitely worth the money i shelled out for it. i wouldn't suggest getting an ipod unless you really need it, and by that i mean its secondary function (external firewire HD). i use it on a regular basis for presentations to clients and to students.

the functionality of the ipod is excellent, the touchpad is great and really easy to use. a friend of mine has had her ipod for...a good 3 years now at least and it's never failed her. true if the battery dies, you're fucked, but in my experience, no one i know has had their ipod battery screw them over.

but i reiterate, don't waste your moneyz on an ipod unless you can take full advantage of its capabilities. if it's a mp3 player you're after, their are a lot of cheaper alternatives.

I owned a 1st gen mp3 player, and my friend has had two for his car... they royally sucked back then (and from my friends experience iwth his head unit, they still do). Very low battery life for starters. It's hard to organize your tracks into a meaningful format and skipping forward a bunch is a pain in the ass (as is directory changing) etc. Plus battery life on them is pretty abysmal (hdd is hardly ever on in an iPod).. Plus one scratch on a cd wipes out an mp3 track more often than not... I recommend if you're going to use cds just get a regular cd player... You can organize your listening into a much more meaningful format that way (only 18 tracks per cd), has a much longer battery life, and, well they are even cheaper. CD's are negligibly expensive (~.08 per disk). Plus then you don't have to worry about what rate they are encoded at etc. (some mp3 cd players choke on VBR files especially)...

Ok, let's see here

* irreplacable batteries

You can purchase 3rd party kits to replace them, it's actually quite easy and very much worth the price considering what you paid in the first place for the darn thing!

Yes, it is rather steep, but it's so damn cool

quote:

* weak headphone amp

If I crank mine up to the max, it doesn't get nearly as loud as a my discman would, but I like to keep it at about 60% anyway so this isn't a problem for me.

quote:

* jacks bust in them

11 months old and still going strong. knock on wood

quote:

* firmware bugs (playback irregularities in older models)

Early on I experienced some of these problems. For instance, the battery indicator would read full when it was almost dead. Those issues have been fixed on the newer firmware versions. I don't have any such problems now.

I don't know where people get this idea but it is FALSE. Mine is a G2 iPod and I have always been able to use it with my cousin's iBook or any other mac so far with no problems whatsoever.

Posted by SuperFarStucker on Nov-24-2003 05:30:

You misunderstood the cross platform incompatibility issue. If you have a iPod formatted for Windows based machines (FAT) then it won't work on Macintosh machines (HFS) or visa versa. You're free to go between PCs or between macs, but not both at the same time.

Also, for what it's worth, you can make/purchase your own CMoy pocket amplifier which, will make it so you can use really big inefficient headphones at decent sound levels or rip your eardrum in half with tiny efficient neodynium (sp?) magnet driven ones. But that's even more money, and from what I understand, the Nomad Zen(which is practically a clone of the iPod) has a very sufficient built in headphone amplifier.

Reviews tend to say positive things about both the iPod and the Zen but... you don't really get the whole "time test" when you read a review. Build quality and durability is a huge issue for devices like this

Apparently there is a "Dell DJ" out now as well. I know nothing about it, but check it out and compare.

i have the old 5gb one, its dope though, i dont think you need 10000 songs on the mp3 player, you would have to maek a ton of playlists

Posted by Vero on Nov-24-2003 14:02:
