speaking of men and nipples...

why do humans have armpit hair?

even more, why do humans have pubic hair???

Posted by N|te-L|fe on Nov-25-2003 22:56:

Dunno about the hair, but I can tell ya nipples can be quite sensitive for some men = sexual arousement ... plus it would just look weird without 'em

Question

i....dont know...

y do we have hair in the most hard to shave areas?

Posted by vmc on Nov-25-2003 23:00:

Probably pubic/armpit hair is a remnant of humans' animal ancestors.

Sperm need ideal temperatures to be created, so pubic hair helps keep stuff warmer...not sure why it'd be for women though...maybe it helps prevent infections too?

Everything on our body doesn't need to have a particular reason for its existence, either. Maybe armpit hair falls under the same category as your appendix. Or maybe it helps spread pheromones.

I read somewhere that appendix isn't actually useless, it has things to do with immunal system or something.

Okay, then, coccyx.

it's formed by testosterone, women produce small amounts of it, to balance out like, and that gives them short growths in pits etc, but men having more of it, grow it like mad, some more than others, it's all individual to the specific person

The females in most mammals usually have hair or fur on their bodies if the males do. Furthermore, testosterone is not the main producer of bodily hair. If it was, eunuchs would have none, right?
Bodily hair grows in preprogrammed genetic ways, often in response to hormones at certain stages. Testosterone can stimulate hair growth in certain cellular areas with testosterone receptors, but is not the source of it.
Some girls have some pretty massive body hair too, as well, but it's just shaved. >_>

Posted by Boomer187 on Nov-26-2003 03:30:

eh I believe it is for trapping like germs n such. I remember a teacher telling us that when girls shave their taco the chance of a yeast infection rises by some high percentage that I can't remember.

So it is for protection, I guess it kinda works like nose hair, trapping shit in the air.

sperm develops ideally under cooler conditions to body temperatures that is why your sack can change how close it wants to be to the body.

Posted by igottaknow on Nov-26-2003 03:36:

actually i think its there to promote the smell to attract a mate. its also wirery so sweat can evaporate more effectivly.

ur wrong. sperm needs to be kept cooler. thats why ur balls are seperated from ur body because they need a lower than body temp for ideal production. people splash cold water on their balls to help them sometimes, a couple of hours before they have sex to try and make a baby. i heard it works heh

edit: fuck someone beat me to it

Posted by nrjizer on Nov-26-2003 03:39:

I heard the smell it helps to give off contains pheremones.

A few theories of my own... I say one use is for friction. It seems, for guys, that we have hair around those places that rub a lot (pretty much only the underarms and the ass crack area. The hair can help keep the sweat from going everywhere. The armpits also seem like a place to try and trap heat in, with the heart so close.

Testosterone isn't produced in the testicles, obviously, nor does not having cajones stop testosterone production.

Armpit hair is there for the pherimones and such. Pubes on males regulate the temperature of the testicles for optimal sperm grown, in addition to trapping more pherimones and all that. For females it serves the same purpose as nose hair and such.

And I have no fucking clue why I know all that. Health class or something, I guess.

there was a seinfeld eposode where kramer changes from briefs to boxers for this reason. But i still like a home for my boys, I dont like them wondering, so i choose briefs.

this is from ask alice...sounds good enough for me.

It's thought that the tufts of hair that grow around the genitals, as well as under the arms, capture these erotic scents. Pheromones get trapped in the pubic 'do when apocrine glands release an odorless secretion on the surface of the skin that combines with bacteria decomposed by the secretions of the sebaceous glands. Believe it or not, humans have the same number of hair follicles as apes, except our body hair is generally very fine or barely visible in comparison. So, while pubic hair and underarm hair might be considered the primary scent traps, they're by no means the only ones. For some people, scents from these areas are noticeable and consciously increase sexual arousal. For others, pheromones might not be obvious but may be detected subconsciously.

A few hypotheses also exist about why we have hair on our pubic places. Some people believe that it keeps our genitals warm. In prehistoric times, when only a loincloth was worn to cover the penis or vulva, this might have held true. However, the idea that a pubic mane exists for warmth doesn't make much sense in today's world since our genitals are kept toasty by clothing. In order for this theory to be true, it would seem that our bodies would probably have evolved to the point where we would have lost the need for pubic hair, which is not the case. Also, if it were intended for generating heat, wouldn't we have much more pubic hair? If this were so, men would probably have hair on the shaft of their penis and more hair on the scrotum to insulate the testicles; women would have hair on the skin of their lower torso to insulate the internal reproductive organs. Others believe that the purpose of women's pubic tresses is similar to that of cilia in the nose (a.k.a., nose hair), in that it prevents dirt from entering the vagina. Okay, this makes some sense... but why wouldn't men have similar protective locks around the opening of their urethra?

Other theories regarding the purpose of pubic hair probably exist, but currently, the pheromone theory seems to be the most logical. As far as non-functional use goes, pubic hair can be decorative or attractive to their owners or to others. Some of the related Q&As below explore the many aesthetic possibilities of pubic hairdos.

For more information about pheromones and their effect(s) on sexuality, look for James Vaughn Kohl and Robert T. Francoeur's book, The Scent of Eros: Mysteries of Odor in Human Sexuality.

Most of the extra male testosterone is produced in the testicles.

A very small amount is made by the hypothalamas and stuff IIRC, but the majority of testosterone in females is made by the ovaries; the equivelent of the testes.

Also, even if you use androgen receptor blockers or GnRH antagonists to block the action or release of testosterone or free testosterone, I'm afraid you will still have bodily hair.

Uh yah Thats why men have nipples sure.

Lets try this when a fetus is developing the sex is not dertmined for some time. But nipples develop before this determination therefore men and women both have nipples.

Posted by Trancender on Nov-28-2003 04:45:

I don't care why guys have it...but if a girl had hair there I'd punch her in the face.

Yeah ok, makes sense.. even tough I wasnt really trying to give a logical answer but rather a purpose.. gotta use them for somethin after all
