Oakenfold @ Avalon, NYC (11-26-2003) tracklist
OMG, he was amazing! No really, he was! None of that progressive, break beats stuff... just pure trance. I almost crapped in my pants. I hope others from this forum were there to share in the experience. I had a great time. Thanks Paul (as if he is reading this anyway, lol).
-Keith
PS. He played tracks like...
motorcycle - as the rush comes (sweeping strings mix)
amoebeaassassin - piledriver (grayed out summer mix) Chooooooon!!!!!!!!
yahel - butterfly
solarstone - release
benny benassi - satisfaction (greece dub)
benny benassi - love is gonna save us
Argh, and others that I can't remember right now... my ears are ringing too loud! Freaking amazing show! Respect to Oakie.
PPS. Anyone have a tracklist for this??? I need to download my 256MB worth of photos/video now. Oakie, Oakie, Oakie....
It was a good time, but I don't think it was worth the $40-50 prices.
Oakie played for only 2 hours (as usual), not the 4 that was advertised.
I thought Oakie was quite good in the first hour, but seemed to lack some flow in the second. Surprisingly he didn't play The Prophet, or Hypnotized.
His hair was longer than usual, so I didn't recognize him at first.
Also, I didn't see him do his "I am God" pose.
There was nothing to acknowledge the end of his set - no encore, no applause from the audience. Just the next DJ (more about that soon) mixing straight into his set.
People who were right in front of the booth probably didn't know that a different DJ had come on.
Eddie Bang did a superb set following Oakie.
Props to the guy (a friend of spacechica, who was there with me) who got a VIP booth (skybox), and got us in to that area. Too bad I had already bought tickets when I met him, and I didn't have a chance to try selling them. When we came in at around 12:45 am, the main floor and the balconies were quite packed.
Also, I saw Roxxia outside, but not inside.
Other than that, I didn't see any other TA's there who I knew.
Hi wallflower. I was there... on the balcony... tall, in a dress shirt with blue and white strips. Anyway, I thought the set was great. I was happy it was mostly trancey stuff. Amoebaassassin's pildriver (grayed out summer mix) was the highlight of my evening. I fell in love with that song the first time I heard it years ago and was dying to hear it live just once!
Yeah, Oakie has a new look. Whatever. Oh, but I did see him do his "I'm God" pose PLENTY of times... your skybox must have been the one in the back, no? Did you have the Avalon triangle banners blocking your view? I even got it on video, hehehehe. I thought it was worth the $40, but that's coming from a huge Oakie fan.
Anywho... does anyone have a tracklist?
The DJ that came on right after did a great job. Started his set with kate bush vs. infusion - runnning up that hill... Choon! Props to him. I do wish Oakie had an encore, played longer, etc. But whatever, it's all good. Great night overall.
-Keith
yeah i was there last night at avalon too... so it really was two hours huh? when he left at 3 or something, thought that i missed half of his set since i got there at 1. i'd have to say i was pretty disappointed with the 2 hours as a whole. i guess he ended the set well with POS - remember (summer sun) but the set... UGH. last night confirmed my belief that a ticket for oakenfold is worth 20$ at most. he played a much better set at centro-fly on july 4. i don't know how to describe last night.
it was not terrible. just not the best night i've had heh.
the two fights that i saw last night on the dance floor were pretty hot tho. did anyone else notice those too? it was like a heavyweight battle. security was struggling with the pugilists heh.
oh and the guy after oakenfold was eddie bang. i think he's pretty good... he did a great job at centro as well on july 4.
catcher - destiny sunrise
li kwan - point zero
benni - benassi pure trance...???mabe listen to his 98/99 sets for pure trance
it sounds like he played close to what he did in boston...but in boston he played some prog and tech house/trance...i felt he sucked major ass in boston. its good to hear that u guys had fun.
last night was a great night with oakie and has me beleiving again. i just wish there would be more effort put forward in reagrd to an encore or an official ending to his set. cant understand why he does that. but def a great vibe last night. i was on the floor at 1 point dancing , i look up and there people goin nuts everywhere, the snow was dropping...insane moment. i still feel like im there..its a shame it doesnt last longer. peace
I need to vent. I have been to so many gigs in America and Europe, and never had I felt disappointed and deceived after a party: Ferry for 2 1/2 hours, Oakenfold for 2 hours...What's next? Sasha for 90 minutes on NYE?!! Paul's set was definitely not worth $45. I totally agree, considering we paid $10 less to see PVD two weeks ago, and he strutted his stuff for 6 hours. That one was one hell of a party. I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, but they specifically told me over the phone that Oakenfold's set is going to be 4 hours. I guess there is a thin line between inaccurate information and a lie. I can't help but think that Avalon is ripping us off. Is this going to be a trend, or it is all because they have just opened? Do you guys know whether they pay top DJ's per appearance or per hour? If it's the latter, it all makes sense. I will shut up and let go, even support them if this is all temporary, but if this is going to be their style, I can only wish that my idols (Tiesto, AVB,...) keep going back to the Roxy and the Arc, where trance addicts have been convening for years to dance the night away. I don't want a 2-hour Tiesto quickie at Avalon after I've eagerly waited 3 months to see him! Do you?
no surprises there... oakenfold playing even a 3 hour set would surprise me.
as for avalon ripping you off hehe... im not surprised. i mean they are a good club from boston and all... and now they're running the former limelight, but dont know how to get people to spin a decent length set? hehe. well in boston they have no choice but to shut at 2am.... i presume they just dont know what they're doing and need to learn how to get DJs to play more than a little two hour sample! hehe probably they dont pay em any more money than they do in boston....even though they must be pulling in a ton more!
Well Oakenfold's set at Avalon NY was pretty much very similar to the one he played at Avalon in Boston. (I venture to say that Avalon Boston beats Avalon NY by ten thousand times...) The skybox wasn't bad either, but when I found out the price for it, I felt it wasn't worth it at all and I feel like total flakiness for not pitching in.. *major* wallet damage... All in all, a good night, but not worth coming down from Boston for only *2* hours, despite the heavily publicized 4
Glad mostly everyone had a good time, Oakenfold definitely brought back some recognition of his trance-godfather status.
blah... im waiting for the day that a synonymous decision takes place in the minds of dance music fans to leave this monkey with an overinflated ego called oakey behind in the past. sorry, ive just had it with him. i know many of you disagree, but you dont need to kill me for saying this.
amoeba assasin piledriver.... that track is way cool. and i give him credit for banging it all over....other DJs dont. thats about all he gets from me right now.
but hey, a classic cd like 2 yrs of oakenfold at cream.... i cant take away from that. its a good one!
There have been many good points made... Yes, it was only 2-2.5 hours long.
But, who knows what the circumstances were? Maybe he really was only booked for that long? Maybe he didn't want an encore in order to not screw up the dacning/vibe and just have the next DJ pick up where he left off? BTW, please can someone ID what track Oakie started his set with!!! What a choon! Okay, two days later and I still can't get over hearing amoebaassassin! CHOOOON!!
Hahahaha.
About the two hours though... been to Avalon, Boston millions of time (went to college in Boston) so I'm used to 2 hour sets (Boston clubs close at 2 AM). Oh well... hopefully Sasha wont stop at 12 midnight on NYE!
Anyone have a tracklist, anyone? Can anyone spit out songs they remember?
Also, when is Oakie in NYC and/or Boston again?

Wanted to go but since no one posted anything about the gig here I figured he's playing for the mainstream and not for us TA's. I did have a chance to get tickets but the thought of a commercial set got me a wee bit wousy.
I thought the guy on before Oakenfold was impressive. He played alot of quality prog... I remember him dropping Sasha's remix to Unkle's In a State. I didn't recognize Oakenfold either when he came on. I noticed the when he came on, the music had stopped. His set was kind of boring for the most part... nothing like the last time when I saw him @Ultra. Place was packed all nite though.

He played born slippy, but didn't start with it here in NYC. Does anyone know the opening track, please!!!!????
-Keith
I also remember hearing Luke Chable - Ride during the night... sounded good, not sure who dropped it though. Night was a blur.
i thought the set was very impressive, but i could be biased since i'm a huge fan. i was high on oakey for the next three days. i even got his autograph that night. can anyone id the the last couple of tracks in the opening act and the first couple of oakenfold's? the born slippy remix he played was pretty cool too.

They don't have any info on the Top #1 DJ! Ain't that a friggin' shame. Who said radio is dead was right. The station doesn't know squat about what TA's like!!
bump: anyone know any info on the tracklist or tracks played that night? thanks!
