what the hell is a dub?

for example, Mona Lisa Overdrive - Born to Synthesize (Neo and Farina Dub)

But what if it's a vocal dub? As in U2 - New Years Dub (Ferry Corsten Extended Vocal Dub)? Hahahahaha!

A dub is where elements of the song are removed and/or modified to simplify it. This generally means that the vocals are removed, but not always.

The word "dub" in electronic music comes from the "dub-plate" that was used in reggae music and was essentially a pressing of a stripped back version of the music that would be released.

I think many dub-plates were originally used as "test-pressings" (to test normalisation, sound quality etc. when pressed onto vinyl) which we now call either "test-pressings" like I said, or "acetate" (the material used to press these test recordings). Of course, eventually, these dub-plates became a legitimate form of music in themselves and these days when we hear the word "dub" it basically means a track with a lot of the main elements stripped back, giving the track a "minimal" feeling.

Could be wrong on some of these points, but I'm pretty sure that's how it all came about.

99% of the time it's removal of the vocal element.

hmm ok well that is really stretching it and not worth it.
and how bad can it actually be to have a new thread about some topic that was discussed before? if you dont like it simply dont look at it. you arent required to read everything on the main page of threads.

Stretching and not worth it? You do want to find the answer right? Lets be lazy and make others do all the work for something that you want to know.

The rules do simply state that you should search for topics first. It's for a reason. Maybe it doesn't bother you yet, but sometime in the future I garuntee that you'll be irratated by repeated threads...specially when they were made so close together.

And yes, you do have a good point. Why look if I don't like it? Well I was seeing if you had been helped, and if not I could've replied with the answer. Being at that point in time I was in the mood for flame mode, so you got it.

yeah that's the old school meaning of dub, and it is still used on drum and bass for the latest hard to get white labels. you all know what it means in our souless genres though, that's a different story but here you can see where it comes from. it is also a great electronic reggae genre, check out Dub Side of the Moon .

I think a dub is just less vocals, not "no vocals", theyll name it instrumental if it had no vocals.

so i'm sure a dub is just less vocals.

a pure example of a hard to get, dub, i would think

As far as I can recall, Dub was used in the Reggea scene. The used to 'remix' a record in such a way that only 1 or 2 samples of the original songs remained (exagerated). They called this a dub. But who cares anyway, some artist call their track, 'The Flying-Pink-Elephant-in-a-tutu-Remix' am I supposed to hear that? I think it doesn't make a difference anymore whether a song's a Mix, Remix or Dub.

Actually, a dub is just a track where the higher notes are removed.

I keep telling people that but nobody listens. As this good man pointed out a dub has higher frequencies removed which often but not always means vocals. An example of a "dub" of a non-vocal track would be Bedrock - Emerald (Bedrock Dub). The bassline is less melodic and the high, floaty lead is taken out.
