Dancing Dude Review: Steve Lawler @ The Guvernment 11.29.03.

Wow.....what a dirty dirty set i just heard!!! Too fuckin out of it to post a half decent review....wicked partyin with tomeboy, jennypie (that was fun fuckin the floor like that!!!!VIBRATION....VIBRATION) Brunette (I..... FEEL IT DEEP INSIDE ME, I WANNA RIDE IT, CANT HIDE IT!!) , charmscars (it was great to FINALLY meet you!!!!), pixie chick, mattvagrant, ShAwZy, cono_sur (first again!??!!?) fuck, i know im forgetting others.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I think Lawler outdid his set at iDream for sure (which says alot),
a lot more uptempo this time around starting off with some insane bongo action and signature dark drums sound throughout the set.
REALLY REALLY groovin set, wouldve enjoyed it more if i heard it at System with a better crowd. Dont think ive been bumped into as many times as i did tonight (lots of sketchies all over). One MASSIVE trainwreck in his set, but other than that TIGHT ass mixing overall.

Lawler 9/10

Dancing Dude Wow, wow, wow........

Okay... so now my legs are really, REALLY sore...

Wow, that was one of the best sets I've heard all year... Lawler blew the crowd away all night... so tired... SO amazing! Need help with the tracks everyone... remember Darkbeat and a beautiful remix of one of Sarah McLachlan's new songs... sexy, tribal, dark, crazy, sexy, did I say amazing? Suffice to say that MattVagrant and I found ourselves on a riser less than 1 hour into Lawler's set, and both of us were stone cold sober all night!!!!!! (and my sobah sistah charmscars too, of course!)

Wow, wow, wow.... no words... amazing...

Great to see Bubblegirl, Enraptured, cono_sur, TechnoAddict, Swamper, Lauryn and friend Tina, torontobarfly, and, of course, my 2 partners in crime, charmscars and MattVagrant. Anyone else there that we didn't see??? And John, thanks for guest list help - no problems at all...

Must sleep... so good....

And I'm so sorry to hear about the incident at Aria on Friday night... all my best wishes to those in Montreal.

On our way back from Pulse, we met a Leatherkid standing at the corner of Peter and Richmond. He wanted to know the way to "The Barracks". Well thanks to my wife's gay friends, I am perhaps the only straight married man (who's really straight and married) who has not only had his name mentioned for TWO notable quotes in the early August edition of FAB (under Alex "The Twink"'s column) but could help out this young man in his time of need. To wit, his need for anonymous casual sex, and probably more drugs. Mary and I guided him to his destination. ON the way, we asked if there was a Leather party that night.

The long and the short of it was I forgot that Lawler is a circuit DJ.

Danny Tenaglia for the next iDream! But will I feel comfortable going? I guess that depends on me most of all.

well I'm glad Lawler sucked cuz at work was really boring and I wasn't really needed there either

ps. how long did he spin for?

Posted by charmscars on Nov-30-2003 16:05:

HOLY FUCK

What a Magical Night! Lawler has once again proved to me why he is my favorite DJ to see live. That set was incredible! So sexy,so dirty so bangin', so Sweet-Mother-of-God-have-mercy-on-my-Progressive-lovin'-soul! Was so good to hear a remix of Blue Monday, he made Darkbeat sound totally fresh and sexy like it was the first time I heard it, he dropped Chable and Bonnici's Ride. We spent almost the entire set up at the front. The crowd was so into it and Lawler himself looked to be having fun, despite having to fly to Montreal right after. Brilliant set. My absolute favorite set of the year (my prior favorite was his set at iDream)

Shoutouts to TechnoAddict who I finally met(and his cousin tomeboy)! cono_sur who is such a big sweetheart and always fun to party with, Shawzy and jen (2 nights in a row-won won!), bubblegirl looking smashing in her funfur, and enraptured- good to see you out again!Torontobarfly- excellent to see you Special K (and his friend Kevin), and another big sweetheart- High Spirit, swamps- who i only saw briefly, and my sober collective who are always amazing to party w/ MattVagrant and Pixiechick.

a big 'thank you' to john for list.

Last night (and the night before at System with infusion and Freeland) made me realize how incredible our scene is. The fact that I could go out on two consecutive nights and hear such amazing music make me feel tremendously lucky. This has to be the best weekend of music I have ever been privy to.

thanks for the track id. sorry you couldn't make it.

Posted by cono_sur on Nov-30-2003 21:12:

i'll be honest...i really wasn't sure what to expect last night. His EMix did not impress me, however, his Global Gathering set did. Last night he did not disappoint! I had a great time and really enjoyed his set. The setup was nice as well.

And as usual, a party isn't a party without the TA's. Shoutouts to all that were in attendance last night - Techno_addict, tomeboy, charmscars, MattVagrant, Pixiechick, BubbleGirl, Enraptured, Swamper, brunette, torontobarfly, Tully, nismodreams & samhouse. I hope I didn't miss anyone.

Thank you John for the guestlist.

'til next time...

J.

I've lost count of how many times I've seen Lawler but the tail end of what I caught last night was on par with his kickass set at system in late 2001...

I'm pissed I didn't hear Blue Monday...but.. what can u do

Just when I thought Steve Lawler couldnt possibly outdo himself, he shows up and drops a FIERCE SET like that which he did last night. That was the best set I have heard in that room in a VERY LONG TIME (easily the best set I have heard in that room this year, sorry Mr. Zabeila). Steve took to the decks just after 12:30 and he had the PHAZON pumping his own unique trademark brand of dark and twisted house music for a good 3 1/2 hours or so. I dont think the regular GUV faithful knew what hit them last night. Lawler took us on a ride filled with bomb after bomb of the maddest, most upfront house music this planet has to offer.

In many ways it was a prototypical Lawler set, lots of big chunky basslines, dark drums, big room crazy as funk house music, fat warped electro tinged beats, lots of twisted vocals, some bangin tech and a few classics given the remix treatment. Truly great stuff from the King of Space. His set had everything that one would come to expect to hear in a classic set from Steve Lawler, in other words ALL OF THE GOOD SHIT!!! As far as where my one personal tastes in music currently lie, it just didnt get any better than it did last night.

After Lawler was done his set, I ventured upstairs to the Drink where Manzone and Strong had the Drink pumping with their own blend of dirty assed house music. Excellent stuff as always from my favourite local tag team, keeping all of the house lovers left in the building thoroughly satisfied until the wee hours of the morning.

Overall I would have to give last night an 11/10.

I still cant wipe this silly grin off my face nor do I think I will be able to for quite some time. I *heart* Steve Lawler, who is in my opinion the planets UNDISPUTED KING OF FUNKY ASS SHAKIN PIMPED UP TO FUCK HOUSE MUSIC

ps. Someone needs to bring him back for an EXTENDED SET in this city. ASAP.

pps. anyone know the name of Steves last track of the night (his encore tune)! SOOOOOOO DAMNED GOOD!

LONG LIVE HOUSE MUSIC!!!

OMG. STEVE LAWLER WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!?!?!?

for the past three years, it's been like the running joke that i will never get to see lawler. every time he's been here, i've been in another city and vice versa - ridiculous. so i was very excited to finally see him. i was expecting it to be good, but fuck me, that was amazing!!!! he was so unfuckingbelievable. i like lost it when he played "blue monday". one of the best sets of the year for sure.

also, the dancers and visuals were actually attempting to do something interesting for once, which was a pleasant surprise.

YAY! steve lawler i love you it was totally worth the three year wait.

OMG HI HI HI!

What a whirlwind last night! And to think Bubblegirl and I almost decided not to go... what a crime THAT would have been to miss all that great music and all those great people! (MattVagrant, charmscars, TorontoBarFly, Cono_sur, and of course Pixiechick!) You guys so totally rock, dude! We thought we would just hang for a bit, because we were both DEAD tired.. so we thought maybe 2:00 we'd cut out... yeah... we REALLY missed curfew! Stayed for ALL of Lawlers set.

Fantastic, I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with his essential mix, but he blew me away last night! Great tunes, good BASS! awesome build-ups... Greets to everyone who made it out who I didn't get to meet! Maybe next event!

We need to have some sort of TA identification... maybe a tattoo on the forehead or something... I feel like a knob sometimes asking everyone who I meet if they are a TA! but anyways, awesome night.. I brought my digital camera, but only wound up taking 3 pics! I hope someone else did, and please put the link up!

Out.
