Breaks

So, what you guys think about the ever growing breaks scene?

I went out tonight completely forgetting that Freq Nasty was playing. Arrived in time for his set and had quite a good time.

He played very funky / party breaks, and you pretty much cant help NOT to dance to that stuff. Crowd was loving it, but i lost momentum very quickly.

I could recognise about half his tracks (not names though) so it was pretty mainstream breaks I guess, since i dont know a lot about them.

I also found that they seemed to all sound the same after a while. Haha, only really so much you can do with breaks, and the sound doesnt seem like its changed much since breaks started becoming popular.

So I guess I'm more for the techier / deeper type of breaks, but not on thier own, moreso incorporated into a prog set, which adds to the diversity of a prog set, something I will dance to all night.

Yer, anyway, thought Id have a rant instead of going to bed.

Be interesting to see what the more trancey ppl on here tihnk about them, as I tihnk most prog guys like them at least a little.

Personally I think Breaks + Trance are going to become one .. alot of new tracks i've received promo copies of are very break beat during the breakdowns, but with trance riffs and some 4/4 during the main sections..

new sets from the "leaders" in trance (i haven't heard a tiesto/armin trance set lately, so i can't comment on their style) but the rest are heading down to breaks / trance mixes..

even drum n bass has a new sub genre called "trance n bass" ..

solarstone are also a breaks/trance producer something else which points to breaks / trance combining soon ...

the purists / chin strokers will still say "thats trance, not breaks" or "thats breaks not trance" .. but i feel that it will be exactly the same at the end of the day

ok, enough dribble from me ..

breaks here and there are cool, but a whole set of breaks is a bit much

i totally agree. breaks is best enjoyed in moderation (moderation = 3 songs per night).

i had the awful misfortune of hearing leroy from the prodigy spin 90 mins of broken beats. it was almost impossible to bear but the 3 good tracks he did play was almost worth sparing his life. almost.

breaks and drum 'n' bass suck the wang.

Trancey breaks have been around for a while Huey?

see:
Starecase/General Midi
Burufunk
Grayarea
Hybrid
etc

Breaks are alright, but I generally prefer them in the bedroom to the club. Depends on what sort of breaks you're talking about though: prog-breaks make good headphone music whereas nu-school breaks make good driving music (I've got two Plump DJs CDs and one DJ Hyper CD in my car as we speak). In a club environment, though, I just find them too hard to dance to.

Breaks tune of the moment:

God Within - Raincry (Vance Musgrove Mix)

I don't mind breaks, but it needs to be good breaks, none of this deep chin-stroking BS. And not for too long either, I can't listen to breaks for much more than an hour or so....

I big up this tune though:
Underworld - Cowgirl (Atomic Hooligan Mix)

yup, liking the breaks.

just resurrecting this thread due to last night....

DJ HYPER.

man, without doubt the best breaks set ive heard!

the dirty funked up bass (something which trance will never have ) was insane

unlike my old post about freq nasty ^^^ i was able to be on the floor for the whole of his set, plus be totally into the other 5 hours of supporting breaks (and im not even drinking alcohol atm ).

this guy is so worth seeing, i think perth has him on friday; make sure u check him out; be converted to the broken side of music

and the guy himself is a champ

I like breaks, in fact breaks was the first 'dance' music that I got into and that got me into the scene.

I am desperately waiting for FatBOy Slim to come back (it's been 3 years), I love his break/big beats style.

I LOVE Plump DJ's, they just go off!

He's playing in hobart on thursday so looks like friday will be a fun day of travelling to get to his perth gig.

plump djs - remember my name.

funkiest, dirtiest, sexiest piece of broken beat action ever.

Trance 'n' Bass has been round for years - it's just tranceaddict.com/forums/showthread?tossers.php hype. Breaks are phat, definetly lovin the Habersham sound recently. Along with the party breaks of Krafty Kutz n A-Skills. James Lavelle's GU026 has some maaaaaaaaad beats on it as well!

Oh yea and trance-breaks have been round for a long time - Hybrid anybody? They probably even exist before them.

Another comment..trance songs recently using breaks in their breakdowns...fuck me they're shit breaks!! Really cheap kicks n snares, just boring boring cheesy shite, TRANCE PRODUCORS!!! LEAVE BREAKS ALONOR!!@!

love breaks !

Posted by lethal on May-17-2004 13:30:

Prog breaks and old skool breaks that where its at!!!

Not a big fan of nu-skool breaks....

Posted by webmeister on May-17-2004 23:18:

I prefer big-beat stuff to breaks...

Posted by Spang on May-17-2004 23:31:

Ive had a go at every style of dance music i think, but in 2001 i was ALL BREAKS. That was before it really took off in Sydney and every man and his cat, dog, bird, ant etc got into it so i have soft spot for it.

i think more so progressive and breaks go hand in hand these days rather than trance and breaks because on most prog vinyl i have, one side is progressive and one side is a breaks mix.

Dont much care for the fingerlickin sound anymore but rather the techy/rave breaks. If you live in Sydney its a sin not to like breaks

Posted by JayKuE on May-18-2004 02:02:

bah.

i thought this was about digital witchcraft, jiva, grayarea kinda breaks.

breaks is good. in moderation.

drum and bass i like, also in moderation... when i was over in Toronto back in April of 2003, i was at The Guverment, where armin was playing, and i went in to one of the rooms, where they had drum 'n bass with an MC and it was actually a good hype up....

but everything except trance and tech-trance in moderation is the go.

Posted by TranceForma on May-18-2004 02:22:

I like to break things does that count?

Posted by Aesthetic on May-18-2004 05:07:

pretty much agree with all thats said here, trance in breaks has been around for yonks.

breakbeats in trance breakdowns arent also that new.. but the only one who can pull them off is M.I.K.E. imo.

like jizz said, 3 songs in a set is 'nuff for me .

re: digital withcraft, grayarea etc

awesome stuff, particularly digital witchcraft!!!

all their productions are top rate, and love thier dj sets as well!

Those type of breaks are wicked for blending into a prog set

And yes, trance should just forget about breaks in breakdowns, lol, I think the stupidity of it all is summed up in that rank 1 breaks track.....

leave it to the guys who know what they are doing, ie, Hybrid!!!!

for me now, its trance in moderation, embrace the breaks totally!

Posted by DjKronik on May-18-2004 09:23:

I love breaks but I also love trance , drumm and bass and hardcore. I have been working on a new mix that I will have ready by next week which basically starts as trance and progresses through all of the above genres but the catch is that I use trance sounding breaks and trancy hardcore and trancy drum&bass. I have had good response from people who have heard the mix. But I will agree that too much of a certain style can get boring that is why I like to mix it up. Trancy breaks have been around for ages like slade said with groups like hybrid making some amazing stuff.
