A bit of Mangulation always goes down nicely .... seriously, Mangler doing the opening set of Spaceinvaders@Halcyon was one of the best opening sets I've heard.

Opening sets need lots of tracks anyone would recognise ... it gives you a hook into the night, gets people dancing.

The proof is in the pudding as they say, and Mangler definately had the largest number of punters dancing early I've seen in a long time

a night just full of trance?
you need some variations in the sets throughout the night

progressive trance works well I think

yeh but you have to build it up, start off lower BPM and go faster and harder while the set progresses.

bring back the old thread... it actually had a lot of interesting comments & slightly useful information.... this feels like groundhog day!

ned?!
NED RYERSON!?!

Ive never opened for anyone. Ive never played in a club.

But personally id play something like the reverse of the latest mix i did (check tracklistings thread), not including the breaks track. Mixing trance into Sander Klienenberg - Buenos Aires or Orange - Remember Me wouldnt be too hard.

If i had more stuff like it, i think tracks like Arcane - Somewhere (Dave Swayze Remix) would be good too.

Edit: I would also like to whinge about the general way people mix into trance out of progressive. Not just people on tranceaddict, but it seems a shit load of people do it.

then usually
or something like

Im not taking a dig at anyone, because im guilty of doing it myself a few times, but now its been done to death i think. People need to figure out more original ways imo.

haha .. only the thread starter, me, and swamper can delete threads in here

It wasn't me, and I'd be surprised if Swamper did

dissapointing the last thread disappeared, it was the best read I've had in a while and i learnt a few things.

I agree with psygnosis in that the opening set should be focused on building the night not banging it out.

It was mentioned a few times in the other thread that ppl generally (me included) want to settle in to a night ie have a chat and a few drinks before dancing. The opening set should set the scene for the night but not detract from the headlining sets later in the night.

The best point from the other thread was from Mangler saying that each club is different and that what will work for the punters at one may not work at another club.

I think you need to grab peoples attention and captivate them but not tire them out or remove the spotlight from the later sets.

micro house

i would say either something that kicks in hard and gets the crowd going, or an anthem, something like "Push - Universal Nation" would be great, or "Faithless - God is a DJ" would go down really well... PvD is good with his openers...

Posted by JulesPLees on Dec-13-2003 06:41:

I got all paranoid and deleted the old thread.

But when I say that a trance night should open with prog trance I really dont mean 132 BPM Sander Kleinberg styles...

Im talkin more the 136/138 styles progressive trance..something thats not Blaring and in your face...

There is a reason its called Peaktime madness...its cos it happens at Peaktime...not all the time

Word! Packing an opener set full with anthems is ghey! Constructing the set so that it works its way towards the madness may be a little too humble for most, but will gain massive respect from me.

erm I've yet to hear 'progressive' trance thats 138 bpm? Are you another one of these people who thinks Tiesto is a 'progressive' dj?

I think you should play psy trance as lead up to uplifting cheddar.

Posted by JulesPLees on Dec-15-2003 06:46:

Slade....I have found that we are back at square one with the whole progressive trance thing...to me Tiesto PLays straight out trance...but peoPLe these days are calling that progressive trance..soo I guess I will too..

Any who if an opening set was PLayed at 132 bpm...how would the next DJ who may be PLaying at 138 going to mix into that?
(This is what has to be done at clubs)

Posted by Philby on Dec-15-2003 08:27:

i reckon as long as you don't go too hard it should be ok. theres nothing wrong with starting at 132 bpm or something then working your way up to something the next dj can mix into, that would be a good way to go. i like the idea of starting with psy trance haha that would prob freak too many people out and piss off the next dj, banging out the goa at 143 bpm haha

Posted by Lanithium on Dec-15-2003 10:06:

did the opening set @ solarstone on fri night.. set was at around 140bpm.. chucked in a few more known tunes, but no oldies/classics.. all relatively new stuff

was a bit cheesey in areas but ppl seemed to like it.. nothing with vocals (not a fan).. just happy stuff

heres what i played

01. Scarab - Vagabond (Christian Rusch Remix)
02. Capetown - Cinema
03. The Tribute - One More Day (Original Mix)
04. Lng - Inter City (Lange Remix)
05. Dreas - Sonic Rush
06. Armin van Buuren - Burned With Desire (Rising Star Dub)
07. Matt Hardwick vs Smith & Pledger - Day One (Original Mix)
08. Solid Globe - North Pole (Francis Blaid Remix)
09. Lolo - Extended Horizon
10. Morpheus - Signs
11. Firewall - Sincere (Pulser Remix)
