Unhappy Trance dead in the water

Face it: the genre is simply drifting with no real artistic innovation. It's the same cookie-cutter sound rampantly dominating production. Nothing distinctive. I've been digging into pre-98 production because there isn't enough good new work to keep my addiction satisfied, er, I mean, as much good work as there used to be. To my surprise, I've found many older productions exceeding today's. This is not doom and gloom; trance has been declining since 2001, and people who say it isn't are lying to themselves or ignoring what trance used to be. I remember people prophesizing that Gabriel & Dresden would be the saviours, but the actual results have been marginal, particularly with the plethora of radio remixes.

I've heard nothing of particular note, with rare exception, in the last six months. Six months!

Can't someone do a Matt Darey, work his or her ass off and help the genre back on its feet? Oh, who am I kidding. This is part of a cycle, irreversible by talent. Inevitably there will be upswing, but no time soon, I think.

PvD has gone downhill. The "second coming" of Matt Darey fizzled. BT has moved away into other artistic directions. Ferry's new sound isn't catching (even though I think it has promise). Lange and Armin are recycling. Tiesto is in a production hibernation (though his return may change things). Sasha almost never produces. ASOT is a wasteland.

Do I feel alone? Am I just jaded?

If not, what to do now? What promising artists do you think are out there in this desert?

You need to dig deeper.
There are still new and innovating tracks out there - they're the ones that nobody ever mentions.

Edit:
Besides, in trance world things seem to move a bit too fast for their own good. A tune that was released 2 months ago is considered old. I think it is time for labels to slow down the massive release speed and focus on quality instead of quantity.

That doesn't help me much. I've been trying to find artists and labels I like, but they're not surfacing.

Even Marco has gone downhill. His remixes of Connected and 3rd Earth have been relatively poor. C:\del*.mp3 and Solarize really don't compare to Godd or In Charge.

I still think him and Bates, and tech-trance in general, are the only promise, but the revolution isn't happening. Instead I see these artists slipping off the radar.

I'm starting to get bored of the "cookie cutter" trance thing (by the way that word really gets on my tits) and it does need some innovation before everyone gets really bored

And with ASOT, I personally have got bored of it, because I'm not really much of a fan of Armin as a DJ anymore.

Yeah, that's true. I have actually found myself going more and more back to the oldies.

thats a pretty bold statement to make and i think this thread is going to be filled with people who disagree but to each their own. ill agree somewhat, but for the most part its been a good year. i think you should wait for some of the major parties to start happening coming up in the next few months and i think some bomb tunes will start to surface. dumonde has been in studio all year, they've just been silent. wait for the dumonde remix of symsonic. its hard for me to think of things 6 months back being released because as someone mentioned tunes are in and out so fast. i disagree about ferry. rock your body rock was a big hit despite what i or you think of it. what about right of way, and have you heard 'sweet sorrow'?

grab some digital witchcraft tracks

Hence why, I've diversified my music habits. I went into breaks, tech-house and chill out. I still love trance more than anything else but I think people need to branch out.

Posted by Pio on Dec-12-2003 23:51:

agreed. the cookie-cutter shit is getting way too boring. i'd rather listen to the milkshake song than most of the stuff armin puts out on ASOT . i'm not looking for flames, i really do think that artistic and production-wise Neptunes-style hip pop is way more innovative. the only interesting trance "brainwashed me" has found to be any interesting nowadays is most of the stuff that can be considered trance in Tiesto and Sasha sets. i can still have mad fun if i see someone like PvD live, but it's not the same. i'd rather listen to Holden, Zabiela, Freeland etc.

cobalt, just wait for that hibernation to be over.

listen to what you like and keep it that way. You like cookie cutter crap then listen to it, you don't then find other things to listen to.

Translation: "Yep, trance is pretty much fucked."

=P

I asked ralphie b if trance had lost it's focus and he said yup. Then again, I view this as another cycle in music. It gets good then goes to hell then comes back. It should be quality over quantity. Everytime I get tired of the new trance, I just go dig out the 1998-1999 sets from the glory years, never gets tired or I go listen to breaks or something else. Over the years, I've learned that too much of something is not a good thing, so I listen to a variety of music genres.

yep. the answer is diversification. you'll be bored of any genre if you listen only to it 24/7. listen a bit of some other stuff as well.

as for trance being dead and non-creative, everyone has been saying it every since i remember it. it's not like something that just happened now. you get a thread like this once a month or something cause once a month or something someone realises it and gets bored.

but for me, trance isn't dead. uplifting/epic trance is. progressive and darker trance (the Bonzai and Joof Recordings stuff for example) keeps me entertained a lot, even if it isn't particularly new or innovative, it just wasn't exploited to death like uplifting. and once in a while you get some tracks that show the music is moving forward. just those tracks don't get enough attention - people are more open to those cookie-cutter tracks cause that's what they're used to.

right on!!

the market is flooded rite now... with mostly crap... the qlty stuff is there, but harder to find thru all the clutter

Posted by umes23 on Dec-13-2003 00:16:

i think that for all people that need new music often, diversification is a must. there is not enough good trance out in what is considered current at any given time... i listen to progressive house/trance and tech variations etc. to keep my need for music entertained, but the problem is i don't like a majority of tracks from any genre...therefore very hard for me to dig out outside of trance which is what i really keep up to date with.

Posted by we love sundays on Dec-13-2003 00:18:

house.

Posted by DjSimonB on Dec-13-2003 00:19:

not another trance is dead thread

I think quality stuff's still being made. There is a lot of forgettable, mediocre stuff around now but in my opinion, the good stuff's still out there.

Maybe that's just my taste speaking though, everyone has different tastes, even amongst people who listen to the same genre (trance), so while I think 2002 and 2003's been the best era ever for trance, there's bound to be loads who'll disagree.

ive said this many times before. someone needs to go back to step one and start making some real and innovative music. Bring back the real talented artist that make the good music. I feel some hope in progressive but nobody is locking on that one sound that give people interest in this music and focusing it into making good music all the time.

Posted by Victor Dinaire on Dec-13-2003 00:36:

trance is in a wierd stage

i personally like to mix it up with all genres of trance along with techno and prog.

too much of anything is a bad thing

haven't you switched any b's and a's for mistake?

Posted by DJ NEMESIS on Dec-13-2003 00:42:

I have to severely disagree.. there have been some WICKED tracks coming out, but as always.. you may have to be doing the digging to find them. Personally, I think that if you are looking to Matt Darey, or Ferry to hear the best of what's around then of course you may be a bit disappointed.

I have been in this for a long time.. been djing playing primarily trance for 8 years now. And at this very moment I feel great about where things are at right now.. sure, there is a LOT of pure crap coming out, which makes it seem like things are going to shit, but underneath that, there is, as there has always been, some amazing and powerful music being pumped out. Someone SERIOUSLY needs to start filtering out some of the shit that rightfully should never hit our ears or record shelves though.. There is a lot of absolute shite coming out, making it seem like things are in trouble. Don't lose hope though.. sure you can go onto Chemical Records today, and listen to the new trance remix of Bette Middler.. [who's fucking idea was that????] but you can also still find the tracks that give you goosebumps or have you caning them on repeat here and there.

as was said above, DIG DEEPER!
