The Riddle Thread

Try to solve the previous riddle while adding one of your own!

Here's Mine:
A woman has 7 children, half of them are boys.
How can this be possible?

Posted by DTMMfam on Dec-14-2003 03:49:

Yeah I've heard that one too, the guy above me just answered it. Kind of lame, doesn't really make sense.

Here's one:

4 people are standing in a line, all wearing either a white hat or a black hat, and each person can see everyone in front but not their own or anyone behind. They all know that not every hat is the same colour. From front to back, it goes [ B B W B ]. After a few seconds of silence, one of them suddenly announces their own colour - who is it and why?

do they know how many black/white hats there are?

No, only that they are not all the same colour.

P.S. I knew you'd be on this riddle thread like a fat kid on a smartie.

I had to google to get my answer so i move to the back of the line and keep my mouth shut

Posted by Noisician on Dec-14-2003 04:38:

w says his color, because he knows that, since the man behind him does not say anything, his hat MUST be of the different color than those of the men in fron of him. otherwise, the man behind him would know that he wears a white hat, since there has to be at least one hat of the opposite color (which he doesn't wear).

is that really the answer? no offense to you, but how the hell does that make any sense?

you need to use stupid logic:
first half are boys and the 2nd half are boys

Correct, now where the hell's your riddle? You're supposed to post a new one when you solve!

LOL @ igottaknow's googling.

Yea, it is kinda stupid.
Here's one I just saw in a movie which is kinda stupid too I guess...

What eats to live, but never drinks?

i think by the time your food gets to your lower colon or something like that, all the fluid is gone, so ya that part must eat to live but doesnt drink

there are various desert shrews that only eat and never have to drink. they get all their water requirements from the succulent plants they eat. cool fact about them....their kidneys are so efficient that they can urinate powder to conserve water loss....

since it is a riddle i doubt this is the answer

just remembered one decent math problem/riddle i had to solve recently.

there are a certain number of books lying on the floor that u need to pack in boxes via tying them up into packages. u first try to make some packages with only 4 books in each, but then u notice that, at the end, 1 book is left unpacked. u then try to make a number of packages with 5 books in each, which also leaves only 1 book left. so u make packages with 6 books in each, which, once again, yields one single book remaining on the floor. finally, tying up 7 books together leaves u no additional books whatsoever. my question is, *at least* how many books had to be lying on the floor?

it's pretty easy, though

301

Posted by Syphiux on Dec-14-2003 19:49:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
End life, kills laughter.

What is it?

You find the number that 4, 5 and 6 all go into. Since the number must be divisible by 5, it has to end in a 5 or 0. Since it has to be divisible by 4, that rules out ending in a 5. 4 and 6 goes into one number every 60 numbers (i.e. 60, 120, 180 etc.) so you find the first number after every 60 that when 1 is added to it, it is divisble by 7 (61, 121, 181 etc.)

Dunno what the formula is, I gave up on math years ago.

But I guess 1 is the answer so all that was for nought! =\

no, the real answer is 301. but u still owe me the formula, since 301 is just the smallest solution of many possible ones

edit. and by "possible" i mean the ones that make perfect sense)
