Kevin Carter

quote:
Kevin Carter (1961-1994) - South Africa Pulitzer Prize winner, Kevin Carter, took his own life months after winning the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for a haunting Sudan famine picture. A free-lance photographer for Reuter and Sygma Photo NY and former PixEditor of the Mail&Gaurdian, Kevin dedicated his carrer to covering the ongoing conflict in his native South Africa. He was highly honoured by the prestigious Ilford Photo Press Awards on several occasions including News Picture of the Year 1993. Kevin is survived by a seven year old daughter, Megan.

the pic with the that kid and the vulture was taken by a man called Kevin Carter (i think). Anyway the guy was a famous photographer, who saw that kid dying trying to get to a petrol station. The guy took the pic and just left the kid there(not helping him). When the guys pic was shown all over the world he let it slip that he didnt help the kid. later on he couldn't deal with the guilt of leaving him there to die and killed himself.

it makes me sad that another human being can be photographed in their worst conditions, and praise be brought to the person who shoots it.

its a sad world we live in. the best thing we can do is donate money to NGO's to help the needy, or volunteer

Do you not understand that it's these photographers who show others how things really are in other places?

I know for a fact I would have no damn clue that such things exist had they not been brought to my attention by photographers and cameramen like Kevin Carter.

What was he supposed to do, adopt the kid? He's just a photographer, he can't do much to save the famined people, apart from taking these photos to make people aware of the situation so that they can take action themselves.

What wealth?

When America helps other countries, people bitch. When we don't help, people bitch. People just hate America I guess no matter what we do!

But that's another thread in itself.

I agree must be difficult to take photos is these areas knowing you can do little to help them. I'm sure that wasnt the only person he photographed who would shortly die.

None of us have ever had to see that type of hardship and death face to face, so don't be to quick to judge. We in the developed world would rather live in ignorance than see what really happens in 3rd world countries.

amazing picture and its sad that its the truth. so many people starve to death everyday and there is a percent of all people who have so much food that they waste it lifes a bitch.. one of the worlds hardest question i guess because there is no real solution. i guess if everyone paid to NGO's but if u pay 100$ to an NGO only 20 of it will be spent i would guess with all the currency conversions and all the bank changes. sad.
i agree with Omegasox people are always bitching at someone..

You should check out some of his other work aswell, he was an amazing photographer and took some truly amazing & disturbing pictures from wartorn and poverty stricken countries.

There was a song about him by the Manic Street Preachers a few years back if anyone remebers that:

quote:
Manic Street Preachers - Kevin Carter

Hi Time magazine
hi Pulitzer Prize
Tribal scars in
Technicolor
Bang bang club
AK 47 hour

Kevin Carter

Hi Time magazine
hi Pulitzer Prize
Vulture stalked white piped lie forever
Wasted your life in black and white

Kevin Carter
Kevin Carter

The elephant is so ugly he sleeps his head
Machetes his bed
Kevin Carter kaffir lover forever
