Abercrombie & Fitch

I know this is kind of an off-beat topic, but a bunch of minorities who were former employees are suing A&F for discrimination. I saw this one coming miles away. Looking through their magazines, all you see is attractive, young, white people. I mean, I grew up in "white oleander suburbia" so every kid was wearing A&F. I personally steered clear of A&F because I thought it was labeling me as something I didn't want to be. Any TA's have thoughts about this issue?

They just sell the image they want to maintain. If you don't like it, don't buy it. There are no laws saying that they have to make products that certain people will buy. You don't see me whining about FUBU discriminating against whitey or Victoria's Secret being sexist. If it has to do more with their hiring policies then I supposed there could be a case made, but if minorities are applying to work there it would make sense that they're not just catering to white "waspy" folks if other people want to get in on it.

What I do have a problem with is their Christmas catalog which blatantly sells sex and doesn't sell clothes. That was a real shot in the foot for them. Hell, I don't wear Abercrombie anymore b/c it's just not my style, but I don't think I need to sue them because their clothes aren't geared towards me.

Exactly. When was the last time you saw a white dude playing basketball in a Fila commercial?

Thanks for the link, by the way. I think it's pretty lame that they have to do that to sell clothes.

I see more problem with the pornorapgic things they portray. I mean, are they selling clothing, or sex?

Racism isn't right either, but most certainly a magazine shouldn't be puting that crap on their pages.

I second that

I see nothing wrong with gratuitous nudity. Their clothes all suck anyway so maybe they're onto something ...

A&F.. wow, what a trend, that unwashed looking cloth, thrown to the store as if it was all scrambled in a box.. nice nice, Id buy it right away. .. w/e. My local A&F store always brings this model guys.. possing and all .. the good thing about it though is the music they always have playing inside, good trance stuff...

Maybe they should just change and sell sex instead. Seriously, you could use the same catalog. Just put prices on the models. You can order over the internet for in-home delivery, or go to the store to pick them up. And just like the clothing, there would be a full range of sizes, and they would all be made in China.

yeah, sometimes it seems like the designers are having a contest amongst one-another to see what kind of horrendous style they can actually sell. I must say, i do like a lot of the clothes, but its way too expensive. Not enough bang for buck.

about the discrimination: i dont see how it is different than using race in college acceptance...

What's the problem with the catalog? Yes, I saw the nakey pics. So? You have the option not to look at the catalog, in fact, have nothing to do with A&F. Are you bothered by Playboy and Hustler as well?

I realize Playboy and Hustler aren't trying to sell clothes, but what does it matter? It's just an advertising technique, and you have to be 18 to buy the catalog anyway. It's not the same as the general catalog which is mailed to homes for free.

And I've hear they've finally caved to the pressure and will not publish the catalog anymore. Anyone know?

i like the cataloge, I never considered A&F clothes before, because I believed it wasn't enough bang for buck.. but now if they have such nice neked people in their magaznies, their clothes must be good!

I'll agree with all the pro-nudity people here: nothing wrong with distributing photos of the naked human form. There's nothing particularly pornographic (i.e. explicitly sexually suggestive about the photos) about this catalogue or the depiction of nudity in general and I can't understand anyone having a problem with anyone of any age viewing something in a magazine that everyone has seen, or - even if they haven't - they could view just by looking in a mirror.

Can't comment on the discrimination thing or the general crapness of A&F aparrel but how anyone (not necessarily including the people on this forum) could be so repressed as to deny the natural beauty or artistic validity of the naked human form is beyond me. It's only nature ffs!

Posted by AnotherWay83 on Dec-20-2003 08:14:

yeah they actually got in trouble for that magazine because it had oral sex tips inside and they've pulled them off the shelves...at least thats what i read in the news recently...a number of people found them offensive actually...as for discrimination...i dont know...i recently applied there and i was getting hired right away but i couldnt take the job cos of the timings...

There are many things wrong with porn.
But the main problem is anyone can have access to these magazines. They shouldn't be putting that garbage in their magazines.

that website is hilarious.

quote:
it easily enslaves people to their own cravings and opens the door to other forms of evil, like anger, abuse, violence, hatred, lying, envy, compulsiveness and selfishness. The power behind porn is revealed when the porn addict tries to stop their habit - its virtually impossible without help.

what a joke. i dont see how satisfying one's self sexually can lead to "other forms of evil." you might as well say satisfying yourself at all leads to evil...

quote:
Pornography sexualizes the viewer's mindset.

anyone who is looking for porn already has a "sexualized" mindset, or they wouldnt be looking for it in the first place.

quote:
Pornography intensifies an individual's drive to serve oneself, rather than serve others.

what about watching porn with one's signifigant other? both people benefit

quote:
Pornography addiction can lead to debt.

wow, they are really stretching it with this one. porn is incredibly easy to find free (hub, cliphunter.com, etc.)

quote:
Looking at porn can lead a person into masturbation addiction.

no no. having a vivid imagination can lead to masturbation addiction.

but, back to the off-topic... i think putting softcore porn into clothing catalogs is...strange to say the least. i don't condone it, but i don't care enough to try and stop it.

the only picture i see a problem with is the pimp master with 2 naked girls in his bed...
