Muslims and pork

Sorry, I just found this a bit amusing and hypocritical. I read it on Boortz, though I'm not sure where the original report can be found...

quote:
OK ... maybe it's just me, but I thought that Muslims had some sort of a problem with pork. They aren't supposed to eat the stuff, and so far as I know they won't even watch a simple Porky Pig cartoon. So when will the outrage boil over in the oh-so-peaceful Islamic world over the revelation that Saddam Hussein had several cans of Spam in his little hideout in Iraq? You do know what the ingredients are in Spam, don't you? In case you missed it, here you are:

Chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added.
Salt (for binding, flavour, and firmness)
Water (to help in mixing)
Sugar (for flavour)
Sodium Nitrite (for colour and as a preservative)

Yup, that's straight from the Spam website ... and the number one ingredient is PORK! Some Muslim, that Saddam.

Yes, indeed. According to this report, they did find Spam.

shakka grow up man...

it also says that in critical situations a muslim can eat pork...

some of my muslim friends don't even follow that rule

Posted by rizo on Dec-16-2003 18:56:

although my muslim friends takes the whole pork thing seriously, I cant even have pizza with him due to the pepperoni. either way who cares about saddam and pork, he only used islam as a leverage, just like the republicains do with christianity here.

Posted by malek on Dec-16-2003 18:59:

yeah and he did un-muslim things as mass killings, torturing thousands, etc etc... i dont a can of spam will stop him

It all makes sense now. He must be fighting a Jihad!

Thanks for enlightening me!

Jesus christ, doesn't anyone have a sense of humor? Some take it more seriously than others. One of my best friends is a staunch muslim and he would not touch a piece of pork regardless of the circumstances. I realize that there are plenty of muslims that don't follow as seriously, but in a region as politicized as the middle-east, when you're talking about leaders of nations who declare holy wars in the name of their religion----yes, I find it both funny and hypocritical.

Seriously...it's ok to laugh.

Posted by Cyrus King on Dec-16-2003 22:48:

Shakka, im not laughing at this post...

Im not muslim, but i can see how you are trying to imply how islam is just hypocitcal by playing inncocent with this stupid thread and making it look like a joke.

Grow up

come on. You've got to be kidding me. How do you expect to survive the real world when your skin is so thin?

I'm real sorry I'm mature enough to look at something like this and make light of the situation and have a cheap laugh.

It's just as funny as watching the biggest whore in your highschool run off and have a white wedding. Gimme a damn break. You take yourself waaaaaaayyyy to seriously for me.

Remember Cyrus--It's the Internet, man. Relax.

Im not taking anything seriously...

I just think this is what your intention was... thats all

Posted by igottaknow on Dec-17-2003 00:34:

Most (including myself) bring up topics that support our agenda. While I'm not offended I tend to see Cyrus's point.

More importantly your Spam revelation isn't that surprising. Its widely known that Iraq is a secular state and Saddam is not religious man. He has banned many Islamic practices and ceremonies. He only plays the role of dutiful Muslim when he is seeking Arab support. So it's no big deal he eats Spam.

Posted by malek on Dec-17-2003 01:11:

you see shakka, its actually funny. the problem is its coming from you and you tend to post bullshit about palestinians, arabs and muslim...

so of course i'm gonna take it seriously...

there's always the funny/humour section in TA to post crap like that.

Posted by Shakka on Dec-17-2003 02:49:

Blech, take a sensitity course.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot there was no room for humor in the realm of politics.

no quite as hypocritical as bishops raping little boys, but wudya gonna do?

/me just found out a new meaning of the word spam

lol thats kinda funny finding spam in his kitchen

I've got a few friends who are muslim, and I'm constantly asking them about their religion. They've basically said to me that they cannot question their religion, for fear of being disowned by their family and friends.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. In fact, it would seem that people who may question their faith are just outlawed in order to keep the peace, because the religion itself cannot provide any answers. So I guess the fact that Saddam had Spam with him when he was found wouldn't be questioned by anyone who still follows him, or indeed, anyone of the same religion.

Islam is a very strict religion from my point of view, they don't even eat Jelly (because it contains ingredients from crushed dogs bones!!). But I think the whole reason behind the strictness is simply to stop people asking questions in the first place. Which is why I don't have a religion.

we have beef spam in the arab world just to let you know. it may have been beef.

Posted by smokeape on Jan-01-2004 04:16:

I think they dug a can of Spam out of Saddam's ass when he was going through the physical exam. LOL! He must've had some butt buddies down in that hole!

This is total BS, they are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers. The first word in the Quaran is "READ" meaning to educate yourself and seek answers. Sadly people like your friends family (and you) dont have a clue about islamic religion... also like many in the middle east.

all religions attempt to explain, thats one of the concepts of religion. why on earth would people practice a religion that says just shutup and do, u dont need explanation?? I suggest you think a little before you post......

That isn't exactly a good example you provided there, i don't eat Jelly (Vegetarian), and yet I count myself as someone who's very tolerant/liberal. From what i've learned about Islam, it's actually the opposite to how you're describing it. I think that the 'strictness' is more to do with culture and where people come from, rather than Islam itself.
In short, if they picked up this from their parents, then their parents didn't know much about Islam, or at least that's how i understand it.

while i agree that religions attempt to explain, there are occasions in religious text which religions call for 100% obediance without question of their god(s). Explaination? Because god says so.

also, i think it would be more realistic to say that "they are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers [that are contained within the confinement of that religions beliefs, ideals, and text]."

There is a reason why Islam and Judaism dont let the people eat pork.
Under heat (Hello we're in arabia lets pretend its hot!) pork goes bad quickly. In one of the battles, when the Islamic army was going to war with the assyrians I think it was the assyrians Im not sure but it was an epic battle. The Army left from Medina and with them they took lots of pork. Pork went bad, people got sick and they army got its ass handed to them on a platter. Thus they figured out why pork is bad and it should not be eaten.

still when the brits were holding india captive there were many muslims there and they were forced to chew pig and beef fat on the cartridges during a battle.

Most of the rules regarding food are more for health then anyhting else. Muslim spread through merchants and the cultured... otherway around for christianity and judaism =] but still many smart people none the less.

Posted by Shakka on Jan-02-2004 13:30:

I thought it had to do with pigs being 'filthy' animals? Similarly, hindus do not eat cow/beef because they view cows as sacred animals. I hadn't heard the spoiled pork reasoning before.

how long ago are we talking? because if it was really long ago, i'm not sure they would have been able to deduce that the deaths were due to the spoiled pork. people used to think that all kinds of things affected them. they probably would have thought it had something to do with god. people used to think that flies came from inside raw meat.

if it was more recent...then that's understandable. it sounds dumb, but people didn't really know that much about disease back then. it just depends on when this war was.
