How many records would you say a DJ needs before he can start playing out and doing various gigs?
I ask b/c I got enough records for about 3-4 hours of mixing... maybe 50 to 70 records (haven't counted lately). My beatmatching is pretty much spot on enough for playing out and I got sets ready on CD for ppl to hear... I just want opinions on how many records are good to start getting out there, even though you'd only tote around no more than 50 of 'em.
and BY THE WAY..... what kind of record-toting bags do you have? technics? shure? local record store logo'd? odyssey?.... and how many records does it hold?? how many records do you take to your gigs??
cool record bags/crates are very nice, but in the end i dont
see what the deal is. sure, once i start collecting vinyl,
ill get me one of those trendy bags, but i've seen quite a
few (bigname) DJs bring their records to the booth in bookbags,
those bags with wheels that you can pull around, just a normal
travel bag with a crate inside to keep the records from jumping
around, etc.
but those big ass metallic crates are teh 0wnz. although,
they can cause inconvenience, when Steve Lawler spun here,
he did it with none of his own vinyl. when he passed thru
florida, since the US was still on high alert for terrorism,
they didnt let the heavy metal boxes through. Lawler was
forced to come here without a single track, so he called
Aldo D'Alessandro (local DJ/promoter who brought him) and
they headed to Aldo's house, since they spin a similar
style, Lawler was quite fond of Aldo's collection, and
picked out some stuff, was able to spin 3 and a half hours.
spun a lot of classics, but all in all great set. woudlve
been nice to see what Lawler had in store for us originally,
not to mention he was booked for 6 hours and not 3.

I've got about 80 or so records and a bunch of cd singles (that i have purchased) and i've played out about a half dozen times. right now i keep my records in a plastic crate that i bought at staples. at some point i am going to buy a UDG record bag that holds 90 records. they are kinda expensive but i have heard nothing but good things about them. they have pockets for you headphones and carts too.
they make two sizes, 90 records and 60 records (i think). i'm thinking that the bigger one might be the way to go. i want as much of my music with me as i can when i play.
I have about 350 records, and whenever I need to get them somewhere, I use an UDG bag.
It holds up to 70-90 records, and I can even carry it on my bike (no i don't have pics, so stfu 
)! Try that with a record-case...
It's true that these bags are quite expensive, I paid about 100 dollars (well, 99 euros) for mine, but it was worth the money.
Besides, they are much more comfortable in carrying too.

I got one of these (the LP 50) from a record store for about $60. it fits about 50-60 records in it but it's got wheels like a piece of luggage which is soooo much easier than having to carry them! Definitly worth it
I dont really like those hiroller cases, it is cool that they have the wheels on them, but they arent built like the other cases we have, really flimsy. if you are gonna play out, either invest in a real vinyl flight case like the big boys use, or a record bag like is recommended here. it does have to be a UDG bag, heck, i have a hello kitty record bag w/ Batz Maru on it (when they had the dj batz maru line a few years ago) and that is prob. the most-used record bag we own!
i own the most ghetto record bag ever. but it works 
i can usually squeeze over 80 some odd records in it. i bring different amounts out depending on the gig and stuff. just personal preference i suppose.
awesome info about the record bags....I'll most likely get a UDG bag of some size.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NUMBER OF RECORDS that's best to have before starting to play out?

There truly is something to be said about having your entire collection at your fingertips.
Really, if your ready, then you could get by with enough records to play your set length. However, It's always better to have more incase you decide something would sound better while your mixing. I also don't think the record bag/case really doesn't make a difference. One of the bags I use was a Showtime (the movie channel) bag that my girlfriend got from work. Just pulled the Showtime patch off and threw my records in.
Now, if your gonna be flying to get to your gig, then get something sturdy and tough. If your just gonna be playing gigs around your hometown, just get something that won't snap while your carrying it.
THen I guess I have enough records for a 2 hour set or so then....even with variations. But by the 3rd time I spin, unless I got new records, I'll begin to repeat stuff a bit more every time.
.... I'm just eager to start getting out there and playing live. I can't wait!!!
My record boxes hold about 80 each. If I'm not sure about the type of set I'll end up playing then I will bring both.. otherwise I usually have one crammed with about 110 records.
Ironically I have records in my box that haven't been touched for about a year now.
It all depends on the lenght of the slot you have, but 50 to 70 records is a hell of a long time in music terms. With quantity you just get more options.
I find that the way my overall set changes is very gradually. It's more like an evolving beast that get's a few new additions every week. Sometimes it can feel like I have been playing the same set for months but when I look back my set the previous week would be different from the one I am playing now. Also depends on what's new at the time.
As a resident it's different as you have to pull something new out of the bag everytime you play.
