The good food thread

Hey guys, these days i am finding that i am eating the same crap all the time, and am getting rather tired of it. Everyone has their favorites, I wanna hear some of yours; from home made to eating out.

Personally I think everyone should try Sammy J Peppers chicken fingers with their honey mustard sauce. Best fries and fingers i've ever had.

Nothing better then a huge plate of spaghetti and meatballs.. spicy too... gotta love it. Or dumplings. Or steak.

chicken souvlaki for Greek or
gnocchi and meatballs with delicious homemade spaghetti sauce. ugh I die

Oh, and sushi at Kaide on Richards

There are a couple of places on Davie that do Mongolian. You get to make up your own selection of vegetables, pastas, meats. Then mix your own sauce. They cook it for you in a couple of minutes in front of you. It's also all you can eat and dirt cheap. Lotsa fun if you go with a group of people and everyone does there own thing.

Its all about Thai food. Nothing beats the Pad Thai with rice noodles at the Thai House, mmmmmmm..... You get lots on a plate too.

Also good with Singha Thai beer.

Oh and also Milestones makes an awesome pepperoni and garlic pizza if you are ever around there. Mmmmm.

The Ukranian Village restaurant at the corner of Denman/Robson is a personal fave of mine. It's not fancy, but it's rich down home cooking if you're into cabbage rolls and perogies. The best restaurant in the whole city is Memphis BBQ! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I spent most of my life around Memphis, TN; but the food is Vancouver's best, bar none! Go there if you want to find out what real food is all about. Forget about that raw fish garbage and thousand year old eggs. C'mon people!

While I'm at it, I'm always on the search for kick-ass Indian restaurants. Any suggestions? The two that I frequent the most now are India Gate at Robson/Granville across from the new Future Shop and Sitar Restaurant at 8 Powell Street where Gastown sort of ends and the sketch begins. Viva chili chicken and lamb vindaloo!!!

Cheers!

Love hearing about new places to eat, lets keep this thread going.
Indian food. I dont like creamy over sweet indian food. So i go to the Kewal Cafe on broadway and main. The place has been there for longer than I have been alive. Its total veggie and really plain idian but I can get it so damn hot I love it.

The next place is Siam, its a thai restaurant on Broadway one block east of cambie. It has the best Thai for the money. Lunch time you can get an awsome red curry chicken for like 6 bucks with rice veggies and spring roles. Be careful how hot you ask for cause they like it piping hot at this place. Almost burnt my beautiful face off one time on my stir fry.

The third place is Kintaro, This place is awsome. I have even read about it in really big vancouver magazines as a top place to eat. Kintaro is a Ramen noodle house. This place serves up mean portions of japanese pork based noodle soup. So so good, especially on a cold ass wet Van city day. Of all the places I mentioned this is the one to hit up. I have never had food like this anywhere is the world.

Hope you all like these. I know that they will not be to everyones liking but some people who have good taste will enjoy.

Re: Kintaro

B-Good, thanks for the heads up on Kintaro. I'm pretty open minded, but I have yet to acquire a taste for MOST types of Japanese cuisine. However, I love Ramen noodles. I definitely have plans to check them out sooner than later.

Whereabouts are they located?

Cheers!

I second Kewal cafe, great food, the guy makes it as hot as you like it too. But if your going for a night out with good food and great wine and willing to spend the cash (which doesn't happen too much for me) i love C restaurant. You end up getting a wicked plate of food and some hella good wine, but at the same time drop a wod of dough, but its nice to go all out once in awhile.

Spicy food

Spicy food is a good thing. After moving to Canada from the land of Cajun and Mexican cooking, I have been somewhat disgruntled with the overall *blandness* of Canadian cooking.

Little Tokyo Sushi bar and grill has the dopest Chicken teriyaki rolls (I can't eat fish because I am allergic ...so this works for me)
The Reef on main is awesome for carribbean food , really nice especially if you have had a blah day. Go and have the jah dip and anything from the entree menu or just do the jah dip plantain chips from the appy menu and have a raspberry mojhito YUM!!!!!!!!!
Thai away from home: Still the cheapest and green curry chicken (Combo A!!!!!!!!!!) and very comforting soup (eat in only) for richer more guilt ridden, but really worth it Thai fare go to Tropika (on Cambie or Robson) and order Green curry chicken, their sambal bunchies (green beans with chili paste and prawns) and giner rice and hunan rice............ugh no need to eat for three days after but worth every morsel (that meal I described above feeds two GENEROUSLY.......girls a good place to take your man for Christmas and it is under 24.00 including a nice tip)

When I think of great restaurants here, 3 spring to my mind right quick. They are all on the more higher-class/upper-end, but damn is the food and the service and decor just sound.

Jack's Grill is hidden in a stripmall, but it is the best restaurant in the city. The food is just outstanding and not too pricey. It is really classy, but at the same time very casual and relaxed. Wikkid service too.

Another place is straight downtown here called L'Azia. This is more casual than Jack's and the food is stellar again... and they waitresses are CUTE!!! Portions are crazy big too!

Last one is Ric's Grill... I'm not sure if it's franchised out past E-town but there are a few in the city now and it is AWESOME!!! They bring you fresh bread with every meal and you can get hooked on that so easily. Portions are huge again and the alcohol is cheap with the meals hahaha.

Not the best of restaurant recommendations, but hope it'll do.

Cheers,
Terry

Posted by j_spot on Dec-24-2003 01:10:

elena, I worked @ Joeys for nearly 2 years, their entire menu is golden.
but the souffle is much better than the pie.(ok im a chocaholic, so im biased, but still)

Posted by apri_peel on Dec-24-2003 06:29:

jason, tried the souffle, but i still like the apple pie
and now that i think about it, the food at joey tomato's is always good, but expensive

Talking

Personally I find the best food I eat is the stuff I invent at home. The only thing that sucks is that you get so cought up in the inventing and playing you forget to write down how you made it all. Oh well... At least no one can ever complain that I've made the same thing two nights in a row...

Posted by Dr. Cfire on Jan-09-2004 07:14:

Its all about the 72 ounce steak challenge. Nothing like 4 pounds of tasty cow.

Thumbs up

tofu and lettuce
