Protools is both a software and hardware system.

However you can download Protools Free - which is a light version of the software. It will do the job in terms of editing tracks or putting together mixes. You can use it with your own sound card, as opposed to the full scale version of Protools, which requires that you use their sound card.

One catch is that they don't have Protools Free for all operating systems, so check their website under 'downloads'.

Good luck

another thing that a studio owner in chicago was telling me was that pro tools used to be the sh*t, however, a lot of the pc multi-track programs have caught up to it.. and it isnt really worth getting pro tools since they make you buy their overpriced hardware to run the program.

Ya protools is fairly expensive, diffrent systems range from $600 M-Boxes to $10,000 HD systems. then on top of that you can get the pro control surface if you got tens of thousands of dollars to throw around.

The new Digi002's just came out so the M-Boxes have gone down in price a whole bunch. Ill be getting an M-Box pretty soon.

If you just want to do some basic recording with protools then download protools free off the Digi website. It works just fine for smaller projects, I've done full audio post projects for short animations using just the free software.

At school at our Post production studio we have a pretty pimp digi setup, We got the HD 192I/O, along with a full pro-control system (Main unit, Edit Pack, plus 3 extra fader packs) on top of that we have an $80,000 Genelec 5.1 sound system
