A midi file is not the piano sound. In fact, a midi file does not make a sound at all. The reaon you get the piano sound is that you are probably playing it in winamp or something where the midi file is playing your Micrsoft GS mapper.

Basically, I midi file is a recoding of the notes played, when the keys are hit, how long they are hit for and how hard they are hit. The midi file will then play these notes back out. When you play it in winamp, it will run through a little wavetable or FM synth built into your soundcard that sounds like a piano. In programs like reason, fruity, cubase, sonar, etc, when you set the output of the midi file to a synthesizer, then it will play that pattern in whatever sound the synth makes.

How do you make them, any of the above programs are great for making midi files. you can either record them with a keyboard or midi controler or you can draw them in with a mouse on a program.

If you have one from another track and you want to remix that track, then you have the melody. Using your own synths, percussion and bassline, you can then recreate (remix) that track using your own ideas but keeping the melody the same.

Hope that helps.
