because if you do play it in winamp, they use those sounds that are on your soundcard. very basic sounds.

loading them into fruity and some lame cheesy 3xosc preset can be fun as well

I need full songs on midis (trance) for my phones
to make a nice ringtone
not a simple one poly ring

You obviously have absolutley no clue what they're for then. MIDI can't be compared to ogg/mp3, it's a totally different format.

They're useful for ringtones on certain types of phones, and invaluable for producing, as they contain the actual notes to tracks which can be easily exported into a sequencer. For instance, if I wanted to remix PVD - For An Angel, and I had a midi file of it (which I do), I can just insert the notes into FL (The sequencer I use), and away I go.

Midis are not for listening to. They dont contain any audio, only notes and what u hear is ur sound cards crappy synth playing those notes.
U can load them into a sequencer and instead of the shit sound card synth sound, it will use the sound from a sample or proper synth to play the notes.

No, Free Lossless Audio Codec (?; a.k.a. FLAC) is the best. It losslessly compresses audio at a nice rate and has so many other nice features. Read more about it at http://flac.sourceforge.net/ .

I'm partial to Monkeys Audio, although FLAC is open so it gets some brownie points there.

The .ape file extention is so cool.

I have some old midis from all those amiga and pc demos that were out there before the mp3 period. There are many that are really good and I really do enjoy listening to.

Midi contains NO ACTUAL SONIC INFORMATION. It is up to the midi reader to "create" sounds based on the notes or pass it onto a device that will.

That's because they aren't meant for listening to actual songs.
