A cartridge is the little box that the needle seats in... it holds the needle annd connects it to the headshell.

A good begginer equipment is the following:
2 Stanton STR8-60's + nice carts
a nice mixer like the Stanton SK-6
a good pair of headphones like the Sennheiser HD-25sp or the Sony MDR-V500's
