mixing different styles with trance

I was just curious to see if anyone mixes different styles of music in with your trance sets. personally I mix alot of breaks in with my sets. I think breaks bass lines sound killer when mixed with trance. how about anyone else.

i love my melody, but i love tribal, tech house, electro, breaks, techno and even a lil funk now and then

if youre on oldo's hub or on soulseek,
hit me up for a set a friend of mine did, opening for tiesto.
starts of tribal, then into deep house, and ends up trancey and melodic.

Whilst the general theme with me is trance, it has to be said that I can wonder off in all sorts of directions.
Big fan of funky techno at the moment which goes down really well. The only thing I try to remember when I play a night is the theme. I'm always careful to try and play what people came there to hear (Not track specific but style). A lot of times you see DJs come in and ignore the theme and people tend to get a little frustrated. It's just a question of being aware of your crowd.

But hey, I think if you can mix it up and make it seem like there is a thread there then that's what will make you a great DJ. A lot of warm up DJs will play funky breaks for me and make it more progressive as it gets closer to the time for me to play. I like to bring it down a notch just as I hit the the decks with a nasty funky track and then work into the harder stuff as the night goes.
It's good to change styles but it must flow for it to work well.

I love mixing various styles with my Trance. As much as I'm a TA till I die, I'm such a hardcore Junglist also. When done properly, hard Jungle beats with trancy breakdowns between are quite fun to fuck with!

definitely.. i like throwing in breaks, techno, acid.. etc etc .. so long as it sounds good together

absolutely, i love mixing it up a bit. variety is good i usually like to throw some trance, house, techno and breaks into the mix.

I prefer mixing harder and less melodic stuff, because u can mess about more and be far more creative than with most normal trance tunes, it gets boring just doing plain straight mixes. So usually i play mostly that but throw in a few melodic tunes if i feel like it.

i usually start w/ prog and end up in a trancy state... that is due to who i mix w/ though.

I was wondering if disco could work well with trance, and I need to know how would d&b and funk mix into trance? technically?

Here is my progression and it satiates every crowd...

Disco, Funk, Hip hop, DNB, Techno (this one is tough, but if you can find a DNB track in 4/4 or 3/4, its possible), Hard Trance, Prog, Breaks, Disco Hizzouse, and back to Prog again for good measure

I spend days figuring a track selection that will work though... Its a good thing that disco will always get people on the floor! ...cuz I definately can't play to the crowd...

hey d'paul, what's the beat signature for disco? ..and what modern genre does it relate to the most? and on what medium do you get most of it on?.. vinyl I'm guessing??

normally i try to mix around the genres while practicing, it's more fun that way :) for example: try to bang out a one hour set that has trance, tekno, house, breaks, jungle, DnB, and then rips out with a happyhardcore track last.

It's wicked fun, but may not always go over big at a party. It all mixes well enough if you know the different styles, but it may confuse people *lol* The happyhardcore i love to play (although i only play old stuff) but it usually has to be mixed in some kind of an ambient section, or somekind of flanged breezy crossfade action :)

Normally though when i play out, i try to mix some house and trance and tekno, create a mood with music, regardless of what it's labelled as.

I'm just curious, but are you guys actually beat matching Jungle and D n' B or just playing it in the mix? If you are beatmatching it, well then I question if you are actually playing Jungle or D n' B. Don't take this as an attack on your DJing but I am genuinely curious.

If I played D n' B in the middle of one of my sets I would get murdered, but I think that's a bad reflection on English crowds being too genre specific and not appreciating good music for what it is.
What I would say though is that it's not good to go to Jungle or Drum and Bass and then drop back down to anything. A tempo drop like that would just kill an evening out.

generally a transition to jungle or DnB is much easier after mixing from trance (or tekno for the higher bpm) to breaks, then to the jungle/DnB, and from there hardcore usually mixes well, or fast tekno or happycore. Beatmatching all the way :)

After a while you get to pick up a number of 'tricks' to seemlessly increase/decrease the pitch by large amounts without people noticing it or making the track slurr

I beg to differ.
If you are spinning a hard set then yes, it may be bad to mix down tempo in. However if you are playing more of progressive trance set, I think that Drum and Bass can be mixed in. I know me and Prodigy Child messed with it one night and I personally liked how it changed up the mix. But maybe it is just personal preferance??

Hmmm... I can see this topic getting a little abstract... just realised, you guys seemingly being more into the proggy sound would also go for Drum and Bass of that nature. Drum and Bass for me is hard and dark. Otherwise it becomes ambient drum and bass (well in my book at least) but rather than get into a category discussion which could last for a 1000 years or more I think we will drop that part he he

From my experiences of travelling around the globe as a DJ I have noticed that people outside Europe are more greatful for changes in music i.e. a DJ that drops all sorts where as in Europe people tend to go for a particular type of sound and want it to stay that way.

Perhaps it's because the Europeans are so spoilt for choice compared to a lot of other cultures with regards to dance music. While careful not to forget house music is an American idea.
I suppose in reality when I use the term Europeans it really means the Brits, Belgians, Dutch and the Germans... well at least with regards to trance music anyways.

Guess it's not something really worth going into deep for as it's a personal thing.
