paul van dyk in nueva vallarta REVIEW

first off. spent 2 weeks in puerto vallarta. had a blast, de santo's is a wicked club, and up is a great pre-drink spot. but de santo's is great, saw dj space there who was great and a bunch of others.

got to mayan palace at 10:00 just as jerry bonham was getting on. jerry played a perfectly tight programmed set. just a phenominal warm-up set. closed with junkie xl's mix of dirty sticky floors. i much preffered jerry's to pvd. pvd started with the countdown with fireworks going off everywhere. absolutely amazing being on the beach. pvd rocked the house, too trancey for me but man 10,000 mexicans were just losing it. this girl dj came on after pvd and started playing amazing pumping house but was off shortly after to some local dj playing pvd tracks. jerry bonham and the setting made it worthwhile for me. good party, had the vibe of a rave 5 years ago. people actually were excited about the music.

i don't know if it so much had the vibe of a party 5 years ago... people were definitely hyped for the tunes, but i was surprised (and maybe a tiny bit disappointed, ha) at the absence of candy-raver PLUR types glowing with beady pupils. we were in pv for a week of vacation as well. missed bonham, arrived around 1:00 and could hardly complain, paul threw it down epic, uplifting, and abstract. not sure what happened after he finished, though, the sound quality completely derailed. was it dj heaven that played pvd-esque trance from 5 onwards? one of the promoters seemed to think it was a local... who was trainspotting at that point anyways though

anyways, my taste in electronic music is generally much more chicago-meet-san-francisco than amsterdam, but this was a wicked and lush night and mexicans rock (although i think montreal could teach them a few lessons in partying proper). happy new year all!
