Do you have a default synth when you are creating a new melody?

I am looking for a 'generic' - if there is such a thing - sound that will give me a good idea of whether or not my melodies are worth persuing, rather than just the basic piano sound cubase spits out. I have hooked up a few VSTi's and used the most 'generic' sounding synth lead I can find, but was wondering what you lot use?

i have my "standart-synth" for a melody, because, you should have your own style! so if you once found one (atm), you should test your new melodies in the synth you want to create with the mellow!
for me its the z3ta+ @ the moment! very powerful sound!

i use 2 default synth presets.. one with the standard detuned supersaw and plucked sound, because this are the 2 basic synths which works with the most melodies..

I hammer out most of my melodies with the Pro53 with my own personal SuperSaw preset. Plus an effects ensemble [reverb delay and eq].

Check out StateOfMatters tutorial on making SuperSaws with the Pro53, I do mine a bit differently but his tutorial turns out excellent, except for one things he gets backwards near the begining.

I've a samples I created with some synths... I choose what I think is the best of them to make the melody with and then I add filters...

Try building up a small library of lead sounds on a single synth. Then you can loop the melody, and flick through each sound on the synth seeing what it sounds like. Don't forget to try adding some delay (etc.) when doing this

Also, why not try some totally different sounds? Much of the time it won't sound good enough, but there are times when an unconventional sound makes an interesting lead, and will really make your track stand out!

cheers all, I set up that supersaw and have also been running my melodies through absynth as well. Nothing stunning yet, but I feel thats more my tunes than the instruments

I use a piano personally, but I guess since I can actually play one it just comes the most naturally to me.
