So, anyone worried about Serbian elections?

Well, the party that won the most votes is the "Serbian Radical Party". A part of their political program is to reconquer the parts of Croatia they held during 1990's war in Yugoslavia. The party doesn't have a 50% majority, but it could get it if it enters a coalition with some other party. Seriously, are serbian people complete retards??? Their country is totally screwed up and exhausted, and yet most of them vote for a party that wants to start another offensive war!

I heard somewhere that the majority of Serbs never got the full picture on the wars in former Yugoslavia. They were told that the Serbs are the victims and that it were Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo etc. who struck first. So I wouldn't call them retards - just acting on a different basis of information than you and me.

Heh, well, it kinda is hard to tell who started which war. In Croatia, both sides wanted the war, as some croatian separatists were hardcore nationalists who wanted to see the serbs killed or removed from croatia (Tudjman included). Both sides have intentionally caused small scale provocations in order to polarize the situation, and they even killed some of their own people who were against the war. In Bosnia, however, nobody wanted the war, so the serbs did strike there first. Now, Kosovo was (is?) an integral region of serbia, so it was the separatists there who initiated the war, after Milosevic stripped them of their autonomy.

Still, it doesn't matter here who struck first in the last war. The territories that serbs desire have never been a part of Serbia, and have always been a part of Croatia (except for a small period of time when they were ruled by the turks). The serbian population there were the descendants of serbs who fled the turks in 1400s. But after this war, the serbs are no longer a majority there. Although peaceful integration is under way, and the ethnic tensions are not really that great anymore, the only people who are coming back are old grannies who won't live for long and who are definitely not very physically/mentally capable. Besides, Serbia is totally exhausted and would certainly not win the war here. Although their army is somewhat larger, their financial situation and territorial integrity are nowhere near that of Croatia. Not to mention what the international reaction would be, since Croatia is about to join NATO.
