PCI modems on Linux
well folks, i couldn't b bothered goin out and buyin a new modem, so i'm just wonderin if at any stage within the past 5-6 years, has there been any developments on the whole winmodem shit?
cant detect mine under RH 7.2 (think it's 7.2 neways..)
curse u damn winmodems!!!
UglyDave
No.
Winmodems aren't simply generic devices that linux has trouble supporting - the problem with winmodems is that several functions which should be implemented in hardware are performed using software, which is only developed under windows.
As such, linux developers would need to develop a separate driver for every single winmodem. Don't expect to find one for yours unless you've got a very popular one, like the ones with Lucent chipsets. For that you can do a search on sourceforge/freshmeat.
i should know this, but what other kinds of connection are there other than PCI?
*feels ashamed*
any suggestions for a good one which will work and be easily detectable?

in the two years that i haven't used linux, mandrake went from 8.1 to 9.2 and they implemented USB (i was VERY surprised to be able to use my digicam with no problems) and other things... plus linux became more widely used and more popular
as far as i know, *SOME* winmodems *CAN* be used in *nix systems, but for now the majority is crapping out because the companies still refuse to write *nix drivers.
i have an Actiontec CallWaiting PCI modem that works great under linux, but that's because it cost $80 and it's an authentic modem, without software emulation. even on the box it said it would work under *nix.
www.groups.google.com <-- search for your modem with keywords like "linux" etc. maybe some people got it to work or maybe you'll find links to sites where they list which modems work and which don't (2 years ago i was into that)
haven't used modem for ages but this links may help you?
http://start.at/modem
http://www.linmodems.org/
remember, google is your friend
i have also heard that suse has better modem supprt, donno if that is true though...
try miniconf , theres a tool for probing pci connection /dev
thanks for the help everyone!
