Trance VS Techno???

I've become confused reading over some posts here and on different sites about the differences between Trance and techno. For me i think part of the problem is i reffered to all electronic music as techno for quite some time. So i was wondering if someone could give me an example of a very typical trance song vs a very typical techno song that would be easy to find. What are the main differences in the sound? I THOUGHT I was always a verrry solid trance fan, but i'm thinking maybe some of my songs lean towards other categories... o well i'm hoping i can get a few helpful replies and not just a bunch bitching me out for saying "techno" too many times in one post hahahaha. later everyone. there should be a sticky because there are a lot of newbies referring to everything as techno

Techno = DJ Rush - Get On Up (Chris Liebing Mix)

Trance = Kamaya Painters - Endless Wave

listening to these songs, put them in their respective categories and you will never make that mistake again. its not like there are subtle differences between the two, the difference between trance and techno is fairly overt

there is some melodic techno, so it can get confusing.
the way you can make a difference is how comercial a track sounds. trance is way more comercial then techno.
thats not always a bad thing, since trance can get more fans this way.

This is what I don't understand... a bunch of people keep saying "Let's keep trance underground!" when trance is the most commercial and most accesible form of EDM to the mass public. The problem is the public doesn't even know the term trance and just calls everything techno.

ill admit that i do get a lill pissed off when ignorant ppl refer to all rave muzic as techno... an ya i understand that they never listen to any rave muzic at all and so they just know what the media calls it... but theres sooooooooo much more differance between techno and trance...

I sometimes have a hard time differentiating between techno and certain types of hard trance, I think there's a point where the two genres blend.

Each has their own unique sound. Techno makes you move your ass while trance takes you on that epic journey. You also have to understand that techno has a harder aspect like trance, Rush, Wittkind, or Amok; or softer, Robert Hood or Christian Bloch. But as you explore and listen to the genre more and more, then you will start to know the difference.

Don't forget, there's also a House genre too.

What the fuck are you talking about?
Thoes are just diffrent ganres, totaly diffrent kinds of music.
Some trance tunes do sound abit chessy and comercial, but some of them have the most amazing melodies, the most amazing rythem and even the most amazing vocals.

i think hes looking for a proper defintion guys...

Trance - BPM 128-145, has atleast 1 synth that lasts the entire song
Techno - BPM 135-160, is minimal in percussion but has larger basslines than trance, smaller arrangments of steps as well.

Hey folks it's very easy recognize the straight techno and the straight trance, then exist other forms (derivations) like tech trance, tech house, hrad trance... that could get to the confusion. But who cannot say PvD is trance and Jeff Mills techno?

But if you don't know what is techno (I say that cos' I've seen in these boards great confusions about this genre) I suggest these two definitons. I think they are very clearly:

- Trance
Trance music has alot of euphoric breaks with a couple of vocals thrown in for good measure. The beat is generally of a normal speed.

- Techno
Techno music is alot harder and experimental than Trance. There are no vocals and the beat tends to be very fast and furious.

But I repeat exists a lot of derivations of these two genres.

It's not a mistake to refer the whole EDM by the name of techno, cos' techno is the roots of electronica. The mistake is confuse all the electronica subgenres and say ow all the music that has electronic beats is techno!!!, but when you're talking about electronica in general you can say perfectly "techno", personnally I don't like cos' can get to confuse terms.

I have to say (I'm under 20) I know techno as a subgenre of electronica (Beyer, Liebing, Clarke style as you said) and electronica to refer all the genres.

nah....you learn with time what is techno and what is trance and what is other genres. Takes time to understand it.

not really. these artists were already making electronic music long before techno was even invented. and long before kraftwerk was formed, for that matter.

Yeah I agree, needs listen a lot of different EDM, read about the topic, talk with ppl who know more, etc.
I suppose i see very clearly what techno is and what trance is cos' I've listened different EDM... since I was 15.

Yes noise but kraftwerks are considered the originators for some reason. They did do a lot as well as the other guys.
