Battle Royale

Absolutely beautiful film
I've seen a lot of movies made here in the US, a lot of great films. However, i've been looking at international films for a small bit and i can definently say that some of the best films i have ever seen were on an international level, where money and special effects are not the main point of the movie.
Battle Royale is a film from japan that puts a revolution of students in a game where only 1 person can survive by the death of all of their fellow classmates. Japanese Adults have had it up to here with the rebellion of students in their country, so they create this game Called the Battle Royale.
It's a tad violent, but wasn't Clockwork Orange a tad violent? only to become one of the best movies ever created. Sure it's bloody, but it impacts everyone after seeing it.
40 students are chosen to battle royale the film depicts the psychology of people that i'm sure one will relate to anyone on these or any forums. There is the blood thirsty killers, the compassionate, the shy, the whores, etc. i can garauntee that anyone who watches this film will relate to one of the characters in this film. It's shocking and scary to see the mentality of STUDENTS who are forced to kill one another for the sake of their own survival. i'm guessing the underlying message behind this story is "what would u do"

well, i'm about 20 minutes into the sequel. looks like apretty good movie, althouhg i heard the creator of these films died during the filming of the sequel. well, i'll get back to watching it.

watch this film!

when is pt2 comin out?

Posted by Aya Brea on Jan-05-2004 06:43:

man, i found out about battle royale about a year and a half ago and bought the dvd, realizing that when i got it it wouldn't play on my dvd player cause of regional settings . i borrowed it from someone on tape and tried to watch it but the quality was horrible. i still MUST see that movie. i saw a trailer for the second one and if it wasn't fake, it looked like it is going to have to do with 9/11.

Making a film that essentially is about putting 40 students on a remote island and watching them slaughter each other sounds cold, cynical and speculative in my ears. I haven't seen it though, so I won't comment any further.

Battle Royale 2 is a new game with new rules. Nanahara (correct?) and his girl have started a terrorist faction to fight against the game of Battle Royale. They destroyed some buildings as a part of their campaign. Well, their HQ has been spotted in some remote island. So BR2 gives a whole new class of 42 students guns and shit to attack the island and kill Nanahara. The necklaces and danger zones are still there, but there is a new "buddy system" and mission objectives.
There is a lot of action, but i have yet to see the item that made BR1 so great and that's the psychology of every single member and the underlying messages.

I watched BR2 yesterday. Not as good as part 1, but still a worthy sequel imo. Very anti-american tho...

BR1 is very cool movie! Going to see the sequel.

Posted by djSlain on Jan-12-2004 02:04:

just finished Battle Royale 2. I think BR1 was better, but BR2 was a worthy sequel. It started off rather disappointing, where BR is pretty much known to show the extreme psychology of survival. However, about 45 minutes into the film, it does start getting better.
The beginning and near the end had its share of anti-us propoganda. It's pretty much about american bombing everyone that doesn't agree with it. at first i was offended because i couldn't find the relationship to the story, but in the end, its understandable.
Once again, the ultimate question that made BR1 so great:
What would you do?

brilliant film. love the music!

Battle Royale plays mainly with stereotypes in Japanese culture, in recent years suicide, violent crime, truancy and extreme social withdrawal among Japan's youth have become endemic, the director plays on these fears and states at the begining of the movie that Japan has lost its faith in its youth and therefore created the BR Act where kids are put on an island to kill each other Lord of the Flies style.

The use of these stereotypes is one of the reasons why the movie has become one of Japans most successful non anime movies, the scope is a little uninspiring and there are alot of loose ends but the acting is great, overall i enjoyed the movie

BR rools.. cult classic... i just hope hollywood dosnt get its stinky hands on it and ruin it like they did with the ring. Jap-flicks r deffo the way forward, unfortunatly most of the ultra-gore stuff (which i like) is only subtitles which kinda makes it more hard work than it needs to be when watching a movie.

by the way anyone that seen BR, and uncertain what the pauses were, when the screen turns black and jap writing comes up.. thats the kids speaking to god and him answering.

if anyone else is into jap flicks.. i desperatly want a movie called 999,999,999,999 or sumthing to that effect... a friend went to thailand and it was on at the cinema when he was there he told me about it and ive been adament to find it since.... well actually ive not looked for it yet.. but im gonna now, now that ive reminded myself ... although any help would be jizztastic

my friends were telling me about this like a month ago, so i went to a couple video rental stores to see if they had it, but none of them had it, but they said it was really good, so i just bought it for amazon for 15 bucks. The movie was very very good. I knew sort of what it was about but i didnt really know what to expect. It was very very good but also very sad, hope that never really happens, but i would recommend it to anyone. i heard the sequel isnt as good, but i still want to check it out

Yes!!!! Is a show man. I love all their movies (director & actor), hes hummed. I recommend their last film "Zatoichi" and classics of their filmography like "Brother", "Hana-bi", "Kikujiros summer",....

The soundtrack of many of his movies is carried out by Joe Hisaishi, authenticate genius that collaborates very much with Hayao M. (Ghibli studio). They form an incredible couple.

Lord of the Flies is a quality book. I remember having to read it at school and enjoying it so much I went out and bought my own copy.
