review of Guv and System Soundbar

basically i went to the slowest weekend of the year because its right after NYE. I knew that before hand, so keep that in mind too.

System Sound Bar on a Friday, first and foremost, sound is really horrible, my ears were bleeding, and I am not joking. Forget the Dome and extreme and other top40 clubs in town, the sound at systems is really worst. That thing only completely turned me off, really annoying. The crowd was a bit on the weird side but nothing i never witnessed in Montreal. I kind liked the setup, dark and underground, ceiling a bit too low but it was ok. The dance floor is about the size as Aria's if you need to compare things. Bouncers not really friendly by my standard, barmaid were cool tho

Saturday: The Guvernment complex is huge. My second time at that club. The guvernement room by itself is about 1.5 times the size of Aria's dancefloor at least and its not the biggest room, theres 8 rooms in total. The place was packed, the crowd mainly composed with cracked out asians, not 20 yrs old asians, we're talking about 40+ yrs couples tripping out in family its kinda cool to see at first, but it turns out really weird after one hour. Crowd is also rude pushing their way around

Some of you guys complain about lightsticks at Aria or other clubs, wait till you see the Guv... they have lots of gadgets that makes lights and having a light show with 15 people watching in the middle of the dance floor is nothing extraordinary. Drug use was really generalized, some Torontians make fun of the Montreal crowd and their usage, well over there its not better if not worse.

One thing you gotta hand to the guv complex is its looks and the effort put in the decoration. The place is really beautiful and there's nothing that could be compared to it over here in the afterhours scene. So big thumbs up to them.

About the sound, I know MTL afterhours regulars mostly care about the sound quality and music and not really about the crowd. Well, if some of you think that Aria's sound system is not the best in town, well its way better than what I heard in the guv main room. So imagine comparing Stereo's or the new Gravity sound system. The sound has too much bass and not enough mid and highs. So you can only hear the "boom boom". For example As the rush comes was played and you could barely hear the melody which was drowned in the bass. To be fair, my ears weren't ringing tho and it wasn't much distorted, just no mids or highs. I believe that the sound at the room called "the drinks" was better in overall sound quality than what you could hear in the main room.

Also, no dissrespect to Mark Oliver, I don't know if its the management that asks you to play only "banging" tracks, you were all over the place man. Playing trance then hard house then hard trance and some tech isn't cool in my book. A real turn off for me, but not the crowd which was really enjoying the beats. I sometimes wonder why the Toronto crowd praises you so much if you do only play that way.

When I look back at my experience at the guv, that place is as cheezy as the dome and more, with only one difference which is that electronica music being played. Even tho it might disappoint most music affecionados ( I can't for example be there every weekend) the place is working from a buisness perspective because it is packed on a regular day with ONE dj resident playing. So hands off to the Guv management for pulling this one off.

We people in MTL are too spoiled to enjoy this kind of treatment and aren't even happy when 3-4 amazing resident djs play in one night, heck most of the time our clubs are half full only.

To Torontians who are reading this, beleive the hype when such clubs as stereo and aria are described to you guys. Also you guys have a new place called Boa which looks really promising to the more demanding crowds, I hope that other clubs like that one will open up and deliver the goods.

also, be easy on the flaming.

Having not been to those clubs actually myself...

I can't comment on it.. but I do agree we take our resident djs for granted.. Montreal crowds are very demanding for headliners, and I can consider myself to usually be one of them.. however, many a nights it has been one of the residents that 'stole the show' in my books.. mostly Preach.. but others such as Marco G and Mateo as well. Fred Everything can be fun to, and Nic B.

anyway, point being, I consider us fortunate in Montreal to have so much world class talent that we have, every weekend! It's probably why I haven't found much of an excuse to venture away yet.. though I would love to check out the Guv soon. If they ever book a wicked techno HL that doesn't make its way to our parts (rare).. I'm there.
I just hope the sound is better than what you describe Malek.. 'cause hearing the mids & highs is important to me.. hehe

having been to all these clubs, many times, i can say, malek you're right with the guv, i hate the place, too crowded, cracked out asians, etc..., BUT i like mark oliver. its not always all over the place, the good thing about mark oliver is that he can do it all, hes one of the best warm-up dj's ive heard because he can adapt to whoever the guv brings in, and many times when he ends the night, he will take the crowd even higher, pulling just as good if not better sets than the headliner.

as for sound, its not so great, aria is better, stereo is no comparison.

but on the other hand, i have to say that you missed out on the kool haus. the kool haus is a wicked venue. there is lots of room, the sound is much better than the guv (altho sometimes the bass drowns everything) and the crowd is generally better when they open the kool haus. its definetly one of my favourite venues. when they brought PVD for thxgiving, it was THE BEST party ive been to. the lighting was phenomenal, the sound was just right and the master himself was on the decks. (not to mention deep dish in the guv). the tossup between aria and the kool haus is a close one. aria coming out on top because its open more and they bring in better dj's more often. and they've improved so much on the a/c in that club, it used to be always hot and sweaty, now i never find it uncomfortable at aria.

i never considered the comparison between the dome and the guv, but you might be onto something

i was there last may too and the sound wasn't up there.

and I want to go to the koolhaus and check it out too... I'll plan my next trip so it coincide with an event.

I've been to all the rooms in the guv complex and they don't compare to Stereo or Aria! Kool Haus is better than the guv.

the sound sucks at guv only when there is a resident night. when they have big djs it is at 100 percent and very very nice in certain areas.

i forgot to tell you Malek, when you are infront of the PAtio entrance at the side of the club, the sound is extremely clear.

Posted by malek on Jan-05-2004 19:17:

Cyrus for four hours i was all over the club, in the middle of the mosh pit, all sides, front and back... sound was better in the middlea and sides than in front or back, but still not enough mids and highs.

Posted by alec on Jan-05-2004 19:49:

I"ve been only on big dj nights, and the sound is still not comparable!

weird how that doesnt make sense to you. it costs more to power the full phazon setup. so they only do it on guest nights.

Yeah Malek why don't u get it !!

Come one !!

They're only paying ONE resident
They're only paying for sound on big nights
They over pack the club every fucking nights
it's obvious ..

The first thing on their mind is defenitly the music

It would suck being a resident where the club owners deprive you of the best possible sound for the system..

It'a a form of how they treat patrons & employees, no matter how you look at it. I know as a clubber, I wouldn't be impressed knowing the sound is 'crappier' on some nights.

I will check it out sometime fo sho, thankfully it will most likely be on a HL night.. sound is important!

god bless Montreal and its audiophile club owners.

actually i am not believing dopey. sorry man but i don't know who you are, i can't really trust your words. Do you have proof to support your claim?

Interesting report Malek.

I am in full agreement with you about Guv - I hate the place. I used to go there when I a/ wasn't into techno b/ didn't pay as much attention to the details of the venue as I did about just partying. But now that my taste in music has changed to techno, and I have come back from 7 hours at Aria in November, I'm absolutely convinced that nothing in Toronto compares to Aria. I cannot go out in Toronto and have the same quality time that I would in MOntreal.

I had hopes for the new club, Boa, but have since been told it's going to be mostly progressive, which absolutely fucking sucks, excuse my language.

not proof that is not hear-say

but just go in there on a res night and then on a guest night, you'l hear the difference.

Posted by alec on Jan-06-2004 16:19:

I've been on both nights, and aria and stereo are much much better, but they are also smaller, which means they can have better sounding music within the smaller space, so its not fair to compare the two systems!

It is fair to compare them - the system should suit the space and size of the venue. Guvernment should have a system that suits the club.

What we're comparing is the effectiveness of the different systems...

Posted by malek on Jan-06-2004 16:46:

Size shouldn't matter that much, its not a stadium we're talking about. The room is about 50-75% larger than Aria. I think the Guv have enough money to afford it.

Posted by Durafei on Jan-06-2004 16:48:

IMHO Aria is better than Guv in three things:
- DJ Booth setup
- Not too packed
- Hot and easy going women

Other than that, Guv wins !

Posted by alec on Jan-06-2004 17:15:

yes, although the dancefloor may be 50-60% larger, the ceiling height is much much higher, and plays a bigger role!

Posted by malek on Jan-06-2004 17:24:

nah man, the ceiling isn't that much much higher...
